How can any of us who believe in Jesus keep our way pure? By
keeping it according to God’s Word, i.e. by putting sin to death daily, by the
Spirit, and by making obedience to God and to his commands how we live, in
practice, in the power of God. We have to be those who are committed to holy
living and to not playing with sin even one little bit. We must keep our minds
pure and keep our eyes from what is morally corrupt, seductive, and enticing. For
if the sinful flesh is what we feed into our minds, it will impact how we live.
But this all begins with the kind of faith with which we
believed in Jesus. If the faith we profess is of the flesh of humans, designed
by humans, and not by God, and not according to his Word, taught in the correct
context, then that faith will continue to produce what is of the flesh, and not
what is of God. For the most popular gospel message spreading across the USA
today is not of God, but it is an altered and diluted version of the true
gospel, for it does not require that we die to sin and that we obey God, in
practice.
So, if we want to keep our way pure, we need to first of all
make certain that the gospel message we are believing is the one consistently
taught by Jesus and by his New Testament apostles, in the correct biblical
context. And they taught that faith in Jesus Christ, which is persuaded of God,
and which is gifted to us by God, and which is not of our own doing, will
result in us putting sin to death with Christ and now walking in obedience to
his commands, in holy living, by his grace, in his power, and not of the flesh.
And then we need to let the Lord radically alter our
lifestyles so that we no longer do what is contrary to the Scriptures and to
God’s New Covenant commands, but now our desire is for the Lord, to do his
will. And we need to pray for wisdom as to what we should and should not be
taking into our ears, our minds, and our eyes. And as we continue to mature in
our walks of faith in the Lord, he may reveal more and more of what he wants
out of our lives and what he wants in our lives, instead, as he molds us to his
likeness.
We also need to be students of the Scriptures who are
studying them in their appropriate context, and not out of context, so that we
are getting the correct biblical understanding of what they are teaching us.
Far too many people today professing faith in Jesus are putting their
dependency in other humans to teach them what is truth. But we have far too
many “wolves in sheep’s clothing” among us who are twisting the Scriptures, and
who are deliberately teaching them out of their correct context. So be
discerning!
So, if we really want to know and to understand what the
Scriptures teach, especially what is taught by Jesus and by his New Testament
apostles, we need to read the Scriptures book by book, and chapter by chapter,
and verse by verse, and then do it again, and again. And if we are earnest in
learning what is truth, the Holy Spirit will reveal to us what is truth, and he
will show us, too, where we have been believing any lies so that we will now
reject the lies we once believed, and so we will now embrace the truth of God’s
Word.
For Jesus Christ taught that to come to him we must deny
self, take up our cross daily (die daily to sin), and follow (obey) him. For if
we hold on to living in sin and for self, we will lose our lives for eternity.
But if we deny self, die daily to sin, by the Spirit, and we walk in obedience
to our Lord and to his commands, in his power, then we have eternal life with
God. For not everyone who calls him “Lord” will enter the kingdom of heaven,
but the one DOING (obeying) the will of God (see Luke 9:23-26; Matthew
7:21-23).
