Habakkuk 2

Then the Lord replied: "Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets so that a herald may run with it. For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false. Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay."

The Lord Will Be King

Zechariah 14:1-9 ESV

“Behold, a day is coming for the Lord, when the spoil taken from you will be divided in your midst.

For I will gather all the nations against Jerusalem to battle, and the city shall be taken and the houses plundered and the women raped. Half of the city shall go out into exile, but the rest of the people shall not be cut off from the city. Then the Lord will go out and fight against those nations as when he fights on a day of battle. On that day his feet shall stand on the Mount of Olives that lies before Jerusalem on the east, and the Mount of Olives shall be split in two from east to west by a very wide valley, so that one half of the Mount shall move northward, and the other half southward. And you shall flee to the valley of my mountains, for the valley of the mountains shall reach to Azal. And you shall flee as you fled from the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. Then the Lord my God will come, and all the holy ones with him.

“On that day there shall be no light, cold, or frost. 7 And there shall be a unique day, which is known to the Lord, neither day nor night, but at evening time there shall be light.

“On that day living waters shall flow out from Jerusalem, half of them to the eastern sea and half of them to the western sea. It shall continue in summer as in winter.

“And the Lord will be king over all the earth. On that day the Lord will be one and his name one.”

Biblical Israel Today

In these last days, since Jesus Christ, the Messiah, gave his life up for us on a cross so that he could free us from our slavery to sin, Israel is all people who believe in Jesus Christ, whether Jew or Gentile by birth. For, in Jesus’ death, he destroyed that barrier between Jew and Gentile, and he made us all one in Christ Jesus, through faith in him.

So, just because people are physical descendants of Abraham, it does not make them Israel, and it does not make them Abraham’s children. It is not the children by physical descent who are God’s children, but it is the children of the promise who are regarded as Abraham’s offspring. So, we who believe in Jesus as our Lord are the children of promise.

For, the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. Scripture does not say "and to seeds," meaning many people, but "and to your seed," MEANING ONE PERSON, who is Christ. So, in Christ Jesus we are all children of God through faith. We are all one in Christ Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

Physical Jerusalem is no longer the Holy City, either, for it is of Hagar, the slave woman, because she is still in slavery with her children. So, the Jews who reject Jesus Christ as their Messiah are no different than the Arabs who don’t believe in Jesus Christ. But the Jerusalem that is from above is free, and she is our mother. So, we who believe in Jesus are the Holy City.

And, who do Scriptures say are the children of promise? Those who believe in Jesus. And, who are the persecutors of the children of promise? It says it is the Jews who reject Jesus Christ, and it is the Gentiles who reject Jesus Christ. For, they are of the slave woman, not of the free woman, so they will not share in the inheritance with the free woman’s son, who is Jesus Christ, the promised seed of Abraham, through whom all nations will be blessed.

[Rom. 9:6-8; Gal. 3:10, 16, 26-29; Gal. 4:22-31; Eph. 2:14-18; 1 Jn. 2:22]

Against Jerusalem

So, in these last days, the battle is not against physical Jerusalem. The Jews are NOT the persecuted ones! Satan is not against the physical nation of Israel nor is he against the physical city of Jerusalem, for they are of Hagar, the slave woman, for they are still in slavery to sin. And, Scripture says this:

“Who is the liar? It is whoever denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a person is the antichrist—denying the Father and the Son.” ~ 1 Jn. 2:22

So, this is saying that any Jew or Gentile who denies that Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah, is the antichrist, for they deny both the Father and the Son. And, this means, too, that any Jew, who rejects Jesus Christ as the Messiah, does not believe in or worship the one true God – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. So, unbelieving Jews are not the children of God.

So, this judgment is not against the unbelieving world, but it is a judgment against God’s people who today are those who profess faith in Jesus Christ. And, he is judging his people, the church, because of her idolatry, her false prophets and false teachings, and because of her adulteries and impurities.

And, the purpose of this judgment is that the Lord might refine his adulterous ones in a furnace of affliction to test them like gold, so that they will call on him as their only God, and so he will answer them and say, “They are my people,” to which they will respond, “The Lord is our God.” Amen!

And, I believe that the worldly and adulterous church here in America is undergoing such a judgment of God right now via all the upheaval that is presently going on in our nation. And, I believe that the Lord is indeed bringing the nations, i.e. the New World Order against the American church.

But, I also believe that the adulterous church, who unequally yoked together with the government and with the unbelieving world, and who turned the church into a marketplace, and who put another head over the church other than Jesus Christ, helped pave the way for the entry of the nations to come into our country to take it down, and to overtake it.

Against the Nations

The interesting thing about this is that the USA is part of those nations which are coming against America and the church in America to destroy her. So, this is an “inside job.” So, this also means that our leaders have betrayed the people by turning us over to the enemy to destroy us. And, I believe this will become even more clear as time progresses.

And, what this means, too, is that much of what we are presently seeing take place within our nation is orchestrated by our leaders who are underhandedly taking us down while performing as though they care about us and that they are working for our good.

So, when God then turns against the nations who he used to judge his adulterous church, that means he will turn against the USA, as a nation, too, because of their part in coming against his people, his saints. For everyone who is of this beast who God is using to judge his adulterous church, he will then visit one day in judgment, too.

The Lord Will Be King

I believe it will be at this time that the Lord will then gather together his holy ones and to set up his millennial reign on the earth, though I admit that my understanding of all of that is not complete.

But what I do know is that there is a day coming when Jesus will return for us, his holy ones, i.e. the ones who died with him to sin that they might live to him and to his righteousness, by God’s grace, through faith in Jesus. And, we will all be together with him for eternity. And, he will wipe away all the tears from our eyes. Sorrow and pain will be no more. No evil shall exist. No one who practices evil will be taken to be with the Lord, either.

And, Jesus will be King over the whole earth. And, his name alone will be named as God and as Lord, for there will be ONLY ONE LORD – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. For, no other gods will exist, and no other gods will be worshiped other than the one true and only God, our Savior and Lord.

I Will Lift My Eyes

An Original Work / December 12, 2012
Based off Psalms 121-125

I will lift my eyes to my Lord Most High.
My help comes from Him, who saved me from sin.
He will not let your foot slip, and He who watches will not sleep.
Our Lord watches over you, and your life He will keep.
I will lift my eyes to my Lord Most High.
My help comes from Him, who saved me from sin.
I give thanks to Him.

I will lift my eyes to my God in heav’n.
I look to the Lord. My sins, He’s forgiv’n.
Because of His great love for us, He made us alive with Christ.
Through the kindness of our Savior, He gave us new life.
I will lift my eyes to my God in heav’n.
I look to the Lord. My sins, He’s forgiv’n;
My home, now in heav’n.

Praise be to the Lord, who is on our side.
Our help found in Him. He gives peace within.
Those who trust will ne’er be shaken. God will supply all we need.
Our Lord has done great things for us. He’s our friend, indeed!
Praise be to the Lord, who is on our side.
Our help found in Him. He gives peace within.
I can count on Him.

To the Finish Line

Romans 12:9-13 ESV

“Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.”

Love is agape love, which is God-like love, which prefers what God prefers. It is selfless, willing to lay down one’s life for another. It is moral, and it is obedient to our Lord’s commands, too. And, it does no harm to its neighbor, so it doesn’t lie, cheat, steal, commit adultery, and/or murder, etc. But it speaks the truth, in love, and it is kind.

So, genuine love is truthful, not manipulative, and its actions speak louder than words, too. For, if you say you love your spouse, but then you lie to, cheat on, bully, manipulate or otherwise abuse your spouse, that is not love. And, if you say you love God, but you refuse to leave your sinful lives behind you and to submit to Christ’s Lordship, and to obey his commands, then that isn’t love, either. For, love is not what you feel, but what you do.

Love also abhors evil, because it prefers what God prefers, and it loves what he loves, and it hates what he hates. And, God hates evil, and he hates lies. So, he hates deception, manipulation, and the twisting of his gospel to make it say what is appealing to human flesh. And, he hates what those lies do to people, too, for they convince them they don’t have to repent or obey God.

Love also does not take God’s grace for granted, and it doesn’t treat God with dishonor and with disrespect. So, it is not spiritually lazy, addicted to the lusts of the flesh, craving sinful desires, not caring about others, but doing others harm.

It doesn’t live for self and self-pleasure and self-gratification. But, it honors Christ as Lord, and it walks in obedience to his commands, in the power of God’s Holy Spirit. And, this love, which is of God, thus shares the gospel of our salvation with others so that they, too, can be set free from their bondage to sin and so they can walk in freedom, in holiness and purity.

Romans 12:14-18 ESV

“Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.”

Who are our persecutors? They are all who are opposed to the whole counsel of God and the gospel of our salvation as taught by Jesus and by his New Testament apostles. They are those who want to dilute the gospel of our salvation to make it more acceptable to human flesh. And, so they are those who want to silence us who are speaking out the truth, too.

And, they are those who want us to deny Jesus and his gospel so that we can unite with the people of the world with one voice and with one mind. So, they are also those who are plotting a one-world religion, which they will attempt to force upon us all, or we will be persecuted for non-compliance.

But, we are not to be mean and hateful towards our persecutors and our opposition, but we are to love our enemies as God loves us, and we are to pray for them, do good to them, and say what is beneficial for them. And, what is most beneficial for them is for them to hear the truth of the gospel.

When it says here that we are to live in harmony with one another, this harmony (agreement) must never involve the compromise of truth or backing down from sharing the gospel with others in order to not offend. This unity of mind must first and foremost be with God, and then with others who are also like-minded with the Lord.

We are not to be haughty (conceited). But it is not conceited to stand for what you believe, or to believe that Jesus Christ is the only way to God the Father and to heaven, or to believe that we must repent of our sins and walk in obedience to our Lord as part of our walks of faith with Jesus Christ. And, it is not judgmental or self-righteous, either, to speak the truth, in love.

Romans 12:19-21 ESV

“Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, ‘Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.’ To the contrary, ‘if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.’ Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”

If our enemies (our opponents) end up doing us harm, we are not to try to get even with them, either. Vengeance is the Lord’s and he will repay. Our job is to forgive, to help others find the truth in Jesus Christ, and to lead people to saving faith in Jesus and to eternal life with God.

So, if while we are obeying the Lord, and we are doing what he says to do, and we are saying what he would have us to say, which should be in line with his word, we are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, we are to return their persecution towards us with love, not with hate.

So, we are to do good to them, but as God defines good, not as man defines good. And, we are to feed them and give them drink, if they are in need. And I believe this also includes feeding them with the word of God and presenting to them that they can have living water, i.e. the Spirit of God within them, if they will trust in the Lord and obey his commands.

But, as we minister God’s love and grace to others, especially to those who are opposed to the gospel of Jesus Christ, we must guard our hearts against evil, so that we are not overcome by it while trying to rescue them from their evil, for evil is a very powerful and hypnotic influence.

So, we must remain strong in our faith, and we must not bend (compromise) on truth and righteousness. If we are going to survive the onslaught of our enemy, which is most certainly on its way, then we need to be grounded in the Word of God and be walking according to the Spirit, and not according to the flesh, so that we, by the Spirit, prevail over evil, and so it does not prevail over us, because we were weak, unprepared, and we lost our footing.

So, get ready for tough days to come, for Scripture says they will come. Be prepared to be persecuted for your faith in Jesus Christ if you are committed to the Lord and to following him in truth to the finish line. And, be prepared to stand your ground to the death, if need be.

Sing to Me of Heaven

Songwriters: Ada Powell / Benjamin Burke Beall

Sing to me of Heaven, sing that song of peace
From the toils that bind me it will bring release
Burdens will be lifted that are pressing so
Showers of great blessing o'er my heart will flow

Sing to me of Heaven, as I walk alone
Dreaming of the comrades that so long have gone
In a fairer region 'mong the angel throng
They are happy as they sing that old, sweet song

Sing to me of Heaven, tenderly and low
Till the shadows o'er me rise and swiftly go
When my heart is weary, when the day is long
Sing to me of Heaven, sing that old, sweet song

Sing to me of Heaven, let me fondly dream
Of its golden glory, of its pearly gleam
Sing to me when shadows of the evening fall
Sing to me of heaven, sweetest song of all

Toxic Authority

Titus 3:1-2 ESV

“Remind them to be submissive to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work, to speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show perfect courtesy toward all people.”

As followers of Jesus Christ, we are to be law-abiding citizens of our nations, with one exception. If a ruler or anyone in authority over us requires of us to disobey God – Father, Son (Jesus Christ) and Holy Spirit – and to disobey the teachings of his Word, we are to obey God rather than man. We are never to deny our Lord to be in submission to human authority.

If we have placed ourselves under human authority in a church situation, thus, where the leadership is not following the Lord and the Scriptures, and where they are abusing their authority for their own gain, or where they are taking liberties with the authority given them by God to manipulate and to lead astray the flock, we don’t have to follow them.

Scripture teaches that we are to run away from such strangers, from such thieves and robbers who are out to destroy the church. We are first to test the spirits to see if they are of God or not, and if not, then we are come out from among them so that we don’t share in their sins or in their punishment. We are not to be unequally yoked together with the world or to take part in any unclean thing (Jn. 10:1-18; 1 Jn. 4:1-6; 2 Co. 6:14-18; Rev. 18:1-5).

For in the institutional church of today, many pastors are more like cult leaders who gather around themselves a small number of loyal followers who will do their bidding, and who will stand against anyone who even questions what the pastor is doing. And, they will threaten the flock by trying to shame them into unity and into unquestionable allegiance to the pastor, over and above allegiance to Almighty God.

That is what we term as a toxic (poisonous) situation, where the people are being persuaded to follow the pastor above God, and to do what the pastor says above what God says. And, they will twist the Scriptures to their advantage to lord it over the people, and to suppress them, and to keep them in bondage to the pastor rather than to be servants of God.

So, please know that when it says to be submissive to those in authority over us, that there are biblical exceptions to that rule that we must follow. Where it says here to speak evil of no one, it is not saying that we can’t question those in authority if they are teaching what is false, and if they are trying to lead us away from our pure devotion to Jesus. It is also not saying that we can’t expose the fruitless deeds of darkness for what they are.

Where it says here to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show perfect courtesy to everyone, it is also not saying that we can’t question false teaching or immorality in the church or toxic leaders who are wolves in sheep’s clothing masquerading themselves as servants of righteousness. It is also not saying that we should compromise with the world, and that we should avoid sharing the gospel so as not to offend anyone with the truth.

So, just saying here that all Scripture must be read in the context of all Scripture under the New Covenant Relationship we have with our Lord. Many false teachings come out of Scripture verses taken out of context, which are then used to lead people astray. Or, they are used to bully them into submission to toxic authority which contradicts, and which overrides the authority of God. So, be wise! God is to be your only God!

Titus 3:3 ESV

“For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another.”

As followers of Jesus Christ, we are also to put away our former lives of living in sin and for self. It should be said of us, too, that we WERE ONCE foolish and disobedient, etc., not that we still are slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days doing what our evil hearts desire.

For, Jesus Christ died on that cross that we might die with him to sin and live to him and to his righteousness. He died that we might no longer live for ourselves, but for him who gave his life up for us. He died, too, that we might no longer be slaves to sin, but that we might now be bondservants of God and of his righteousness (1 Pet. 2:24; 2 Co. 5:15, 21; Rom. 6:1-23).

Titus 3:4-8 ESV

“But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. The saying is trustworthy, and I want you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to devote themselves to good works. These things are excellent and profitable for people.”

Toxic leadership also would like to convince us that faith in Jesus Christ means we do nothing. Yes, it is true that we are only saved by God’s grace, through God-given faith in Jesus Christ, and this is not of ourselves, not of our own works, lest we should boast that we somehow attained our own salvation from sin (Eph. 2:8-9).

And, yes, our salvation from sin and even the faith to believe in Jesus Christ are God’s gifts to us, of the gift of his grace. But, since they are from God, they will submit to God’s authority.

Since Jesus died that we would die with him to sin and live to him and to his righteousness, then by faith, in the power of God’s Spirit, we forsake our former lives of living for sin and self, and we now follow our Lord in obedience to his commands (Lu. 9:23-26; Rom. 6:1-23; Rom. 8:1-17; Eph. 4:17-24; 1 Jn. 1:5-9; 1 Jn. 2:3-6; Tit. 2:11-14).

For, although we do nothing in ourselves to earn or to deserve our own salvation, we are saved to do good works which God prepared in advance that we should do (Eph. 2:10; Tit. 2:14; Tit. 3:8; Rom. 2:6-8).

Titus 3:9-11 ESV

“But avoid foolish controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels about the law, for they are unprofitable and worthless. As for a person who stirs up division, after warning him once and then twice, have nothing more to do with him, knowing that such a person is warped and sinful; he is self-condemned.”

Toxic authority also likes to talk much about division and unity, but it is not generally unity with God and with his word, but it is unity with man and with human philosophy and human marketing plans and goals. But they use the Scriptures which talk about unity to try to shame their congregants into unity with the pastor and with the church’s marketing plans.

And, so they also call out those who are opposed to humanistic and worldly teaching and marketing plans for the Lord’s church, his body, of which he alone is to be head, and they call us disunifiers, and they use this and other Scriptures to justify them kicking us or inviting us out of their fellowships, although we have done no wrong in God’s sight.

If we question the lies, we are called disunifiers, and we are invited to leave and to go someplace else where we will be “a better fit.” And, they will even offer to help us find that “better fit,” so they say.

But they are all following a business model for how to build their “churches,” which uses business marketing techniques for how to gain those who will be moldable to their image, and which encourages them to discard those who are the discerning.

I have seen this same scenario play out just like a script they are all following from one institutional church to another to another, which are all following the same exact business model for how to grow their earthly kingdoms which they call “church.”

And, again, the Scriptures teach that we are to flee from such strangers who are wolves in sheep’s clothing who are out to destroy the church. We are to come out from among them and to be separate, and we are to touch no unclean thing. But our lives should be given over to Jesus Christ, and to him and to him alone (to God alone).

The Kingdoms of Earth Pass Away

Lyrics by Henry R. Trickett, 1887
Music by James H. Fillmore, 1887

The kingdoms of earth pass away one by one,
But the kingdom of heaven remains;
It is built on a rock and the Lord is its King,
And forever and ever He reigns.

The tempest may rage and its anger acclaim,
Yea, the wind and the torrents may roar,
And the strong gates of hell may assail it in vain,
Still the kingdom shall stand ever more.

The kingdom of God is now open to all,
E’en the vilest may now enter in;
There’s a welcome for all who will turn to the Lord,
Full salvation and pardon for sin.

Chorus: It shall stand, It shall stand,
Forever and ever and ever,
It shall stand, It shall stand,
Forever and ever. Amen and Amen.

Before the gods I Sing

Psalm 138:4-6 ESV

“All the kings of the earth shall give you thanks, O Lord,
for they have heard the words of your mouth,
and they shall sing of the ways of the Lord,
for great is the glory of the Lord.
For though the Lord is high, he regards the lowly,
but the haughty he knows from afar.”

There was a time in America when many godly men served in our pulpits in the church and they taught the whole counsel of God. They sang of the ways of the Lord – of the ways of holiness, godliness, and righteousness. And, they taught repentance and obedience to Christ and to his commandments.

But then many of them retired or they died in their old age, and many of them, but not all, were replaced with men of the flesh, who taught a different gospel other than the one Jesus taught. And, these men of the flesh turned God’s church into a marketplace, and they unequally yoked the church together with the unbelieving and with the ungodly.

And, now the ways of the Lord, and the words of God’s mouth, were being replaced with the ways of men, and with the words of men. And, the truth of God’s word was replaced with a half-truth (lie) gospel of men in their deceitful scheming. And, they were now leading many people away from pure devotion to Jesus Christ to return to the ways of their sinful flesh.

But the Lord had other servants of his on reserve, who he had been preparing, and then he called them to do what these others were supposed to be doing, but who were unwilling to teach the truth of God’s word.

And, these he called were the lowly, the despised, the forgotten and the forsaken. And, among them were women, too, who were willing to sing of the ways of the Lord, even if it meant being harassed and despised, in return. And, the haughty, who refused to speak the truth, he rejected.

Psalm 138:7-8 ESV

“Though I walk in the midst of trouble,
    you preserve my life;
you stretch out your hand against the wrath of my enemies,
and your right hand delivers me.
The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me;
your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever.
Do not forsake the work of your hands.”

For those of us now who are singing of the ways of the Lord, and who are calling those intoxicated by the lusts of the flesh to repentance and to obedience to Christ, we are among the persecuted for our faith and for our testimonies for Jesus Christ.

We are the ones under attack by the enemy. The enemy has no reason to go after “Christians” who are useless and fruitless for God’s eternal kingdom, who are still living to please the flesh, and who are refusing to bow the knee to the Lord in submission to his will for their lives.

The enemy is going to attack those of us who are opposed to his kingdom, who are exposing it for what it is, and who are calling people to come out of the darkness into the light, because we are a threat to his kingdom. So, he is going to come after us with his vicious attacks and false accusations.

But Jesus didn’t promise us that we would not have to suffer for righteousness’ sake. He promised, in fact, that we would suffer like he did, and that we would be hated, persecuted, falsely accused, falsely arrested, and put to death for our testimonies for him and for his gospel.

Yet, though our Lord may or may not rescue us physically from our enemies, and he may allow us to go through much suffering, he will deliver us from the affects of that persecution on our minds and on our hearts, and he will fill us with his joy and with his peace even in the midst of suffering.

Psalm 138:1-3 ESV

“I give you thanks, O Lord, with my whole heart;
    before the gods I sing your praise;
I bow down toward your holy temple
and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness,
for you have exalted above all things
    your name and your word.
On the day I called, you answered me;
my strength of soul you increased.”

When the Lord calls us to his service, we must answer, and we must not fear what man may do to us. We must speak the truth in love boldly and in the power of the Holy Spirit with full conviction of the Holy Spirit of God. We must be passionate about getting out the truth of God’s word, and about exposing the lies of the enemy, too, so that many will hear the truth, and so that they will turn from their sins and now walk in obedience to their Lord.

And, when we speak out publicly, and we proclaim the truth and expose the lies, it is before the gods, before kings and rulers, and before false gods and false teachings, too, that we cry out and we call out for people to repent of their sins and turn to walks of obedience to Christ, knowing full well that we may lose our lives for the words that God has us speak without fear.

And, in our boldness, and in the power of God’s Holy Spirit, we must exalt the name of Jesus Christ above all other names, for the Lord will give us strength, and he will give us courage, and he will help us to say what needs to be said, and he will give us the words to speak. And, then we must commit our way to the Lord and trust him to work his will in it all.

And, yes, the more we speak out, and we expose the lies, and we tell the truth, the greater the risk of us losing our lives for the name of Jesus and for the sake of his gospel, but then we will be forever with our Lord. Amen!

There’s a Stirring

By Annie Herring

There's a stirring deep within me
Could it be my time has come
When I'll see my gracious savior face to face when all is done
Is that his voice I am hearing?
'Come away, my precious one'
Is he calling me?

I will rise up, rise up
And bow down
And lay my crown
At his wounded feet

While We Wait for Him

2 Peter 3:11-13 ESV

“Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn! But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.”

Our present world, and all that is in it, is one day going to be dissolved. And, I believe we are seeing the beginnings of that take place right now with the things which are happening in the USA and throughout the world. The old order of things is being brought down, so a new order of Satan can rise and take over, but only for a short period of time before the Lord ends that, too.

I believe we are seeing prophecy being fulfilled before our eyes, and that what we are seeing is only going to get much worse before the end comes.

When we have such a perspective of things, and we are aware of the signs of the times, and we realize that our world is temporary, it should impact how we live. We should not be those who live for the pleasures of this world, and whose focus is on gaining more wealth and possessions.

Our focus should be on our Lord, and on walking in his ways and in his truth, and on being his servants and witnesses in doing what he has called us to do, and in sharing the gospel of our salvation with the world around us, so that many will be saved before our Lord returns.

And, we should be those who are living godly and holy lives, pleasing to God. And, to be holy means to not be conformed to the world and to its thinking and behaviors, but to be different from (unlike) the world because we are being molded into the image of Christ Jesus, our Lord. So, our lives should be given over to the Lord, and our Lord should be master of our lives.

And, we should be watching and waiting for our Lord’s return, fully aware of the times in which we now live, longing for our Lord’s appearing, and anticipating life everlasting with Him where evil no longer dwells, but only righteousness. Oh, what a glorious day that will be!

2 Peter 3:14-16 ESV

“Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace. And count the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you according to the wisdom given him, as he does in all his letters when he speaks in them of these matters. There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures.”

Seeing all that is taking place in the world right now should awaken us to the reality of the shortness of time and of our need to take God and his Word seriously. Too many people who profess faith in Jesus Christ have been living not much differently from the world. So, it is indistinguishable now between the world and the church, for the most part.

Our eyes should also be opened to the reality of what the Scriptures teach regarding our salvation from sin and eternal life with God. We should have a divine perspective of our salvation rather than an earthy and worldly perspective. Thus, we should not take God and his grace for granted and assume that how we live on this earth doesn’t matter for eternity.

We should, instead, be enlightened of the Spirit of God regarding what the Scriptures teach. And, we should realize that our salvation and eternal life are not guaranteed upon some prayer we prayed or some confession we made or some decision we made, too, at one point in our lives.

For, that is why it says here, “be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace. And count the patience of our Lord as salvation.”

For, it is not those who make a profession of faith in Jesus Christ who are counted as righteous, but it is those who WALK, not according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. It is those who practice righteousness, in the power of God’s Spirit. And, it is not those who say they know God, but it is those who do the will of God who have eternal life with God (Rom. 6:1-23; Rom. 8:1-17; Eph. 4:17-24; 1 Jn. 2:29-3:10; Rom. 2:13; Matt 7:21).

And, there are many people these days – the ignorant and unstable – who twist the teachings of Paul to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures. For, they are teaching a gospel of grace which denies Jesus as Lord (master) of our lives, which lowers God to the standards of this world, and which instructs its followers that they can continue living in sin.

They do not honor God as Lord, for they do not obey him, for they think they don’t have to. They think that God does it all and that they don’t have to do anything. Yet, while it is true that we can do nothing to earn or to deserve our own salvation, we are the Lord’s workmanship, “created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them” (Eph. 2:10; Tit. 2:11-14; Rom. 2:6-10; Phil. 2:12-13; Jas. 2:17).

2 Peter 3:17-18 ESV

“You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, take care that you are not carried away with the error of lawless people and lose your own stability. But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.”

So, we are to be those who take care that we are not carried away with the error of lawless people who are teaching that we don’t have to obey the Lord, and that we don’t have to forsake our sins, and that we don’t have to submit to Christ as Lord (owner-master) of our lives.

We are not to be taken in by them who teach a salvation from sin absent of repentance and obedience, but which gives people free license to continue living in sin without guilt, and therefore lose our stability in Christ, our Lord.

But we are to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord by studying the Scriptures, in context, to learn what they teach us, and by being not just hearers of the word, but by being DOERS of the Word (Jas. 1:22-25).

For, the grace of God which brings salvation instructs us to say “NO!” to ungodliness and fleshly passions and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives while we wait for our Lord’s soon return (Tit. 2:11-14).

The Kingdoms of Earth Pass Away

Lyrics by Henry R. Trickett, 1887
Music by James H. Fillmore, 1887

The kingdoms of earth pass away one by one,
But the kingdom of heaven remains;
It is built on a rock and the Lord is its King,
And forever and ever He reigns.

The tempest may rage and its anger acclaim,
Yea, the wind and the torrents may roar,
And the strong gates of hell may assail it in vain,
Still the kingdom shall stand ever more.

The kingdom of God is now open to all,
E’en the vilest may now enter in;
There’s a welcome for all who will turn to the Lord,
Full salvation and pardon for sin.

Chorus: It shall stand, It shall stand,
Forever and ever and ever,
It shall stand, It shall stand,
Forever and ever. Amen and Amen.

Scoffers Have Come

2 Peter 3:1-2 ESV

“This is now the second letter that I am writing to you, beloved. In both of them I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder, that you should remember the predictions of the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior through your apostles.”

What predictions of the holy prophets are in these letters?

·       The grace of God that was to be ours through Jesus Christ
·       The sufferings of Christ
·       The Good News of our salvation from sin
·       Jesus as our precious cornerstone
·       The promise of Jesus’ first and second comings

What commandments of our Lord and Savior through the apostles?

·       As obedient children, don’t conform to ways of the world
·       Prepare your minds for action & be serious minded
·       As God is holy, be holy in all your conduct, in the fear of God
·       Love one another from a pure heart
·       Put away all malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy & slander, etc.
·       Long for pure spiritual milk
·       Turn from evil and do good
·       Do not be surprised at fiery trial to test your faith
·       Rejoice in your sufferings and in your persecutions
·       Judgment begins with the household of God
·       Resist the devil, cast anxieties on Jesus, stand firm in faith
·       Beware false prophets/teachers and their lies
·       Live godly and holy lives while waiting for Jesus’ return
·       Take care that you are not carried away by error of lawlessness
·       Grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ

These are not exhaustive lists, as you can see, but they hit some of the highlights of what Peter was referring to here when he stated that he was writing these letters to stir up our minds by way of reminder.

And, what he is reminding us about are the prophecies of the prophets regarding Jesus Christ as our Messiah, his coming, his suffering, his death and resurrection, and his grace and salvation he provided for us, as well as the predictions regarding his second coming.

And, he is also reminding us, to stir up our minds, of the commandments of our Lord through the apostles, some of which are listed above, but all of which have to do with us dying with Christ to sin and with us living to Christ and to his righteousness, in walks of obedience to our Lord, in God’s power.

2 Peter 3:3-4 ESV

“…knowing this first of all, that scoffers will come in the last days with scoffing, following their own sinful desires. They will say, ‘Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation.’”

A scoffer is someone who ridicules, mocks, makes fun of, and puts down what he despises, disapproves of, and/or that which he doesn’t comprehend. These scoffers also ridicule and mock whatever contradicts the evil desires of their hearts. And, we have a lot of them these days who are doing that, and many of them are preachers and teachers of the Scriptures.

For, they say we don’t have to obey God’s commandments. So, all the commandments of God Peter talked about in his two letters, and all the ones mentioned by the other apostles who wrote books of the Bible, they say we don’t have to obey. They say we aren’t supposed to “do” anything, but that Jesus does all the “doing.”

They also say we don’t have to repent (forsake our sins), for they call that “works,” which they say we don’t have to do.

So, if that is the case, we don’t have to resist Satan or flee temptation or love others or forgive enemies or stop hating, killing, thieving, gossiping, cheating, lying, or committing adultery, or worshiping other gods, etc. Thus, we can sin as much as we want, to our hearts content, and yet claim God can’t even see us when we sin, and that heaven is still our destiny.

So, what these scoffers are promoting is absolute depravity, anarchy, and total lawlessness, which is of Satan, not of God. It is Satan who doesn’t want us to obey God, and it is Satan who doesn’t want us forsaking our sins, for he is the one who wants to keep us in bondage to sin.

And, they will try to convince us that life is going to continue as normal, like it always has, and that we don’t need to be concerned about Jesus’ coming back anytime soon, and we don’t need to be concerned about judgment, either.

For, they say “Peace, peace,” when there is no peace. So, they are leading many people straight to hell while promising them heaven as their home.

2 Peter 3:5-7 ESV

“For they deliberately overlook this fact, that the heavens existed long ago, and the earth was formed out of water and through water by the word of God, and that by means of these the world that then existed was deluged with water and perished. But by the same word the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.”

They deliberately ignore the prophecies, the teachings, and the instructions of Scripture, because they are of Satan, and they just masquerade themselves as servants of righteousness. For, their goal is to deceive you into following the lies of Satan, to catch you in his trap, so you will continue to live in sin while being given a false hope of salvation and eternal life.

2 Peter 3:8-10 ESV

“But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.”

Just because Jesus has not yet returned for us, it doesn’t mean he isn’t going to return for us. Just because he hasn’t yet, at least not to the fullest extent, entered into judgment with those who have rejected him to follow after other gods, and who have done much evil in his sight, it doesn’t mean it isn’t going to happen, or that it is far away from now.

And please know that the book of Revelation was written to the church, and the letters to the seven churches were written to the church, and it was the church (5 out of the 7) who he called to repentance, and who he warned of judgment if they did not repent. And, then what follows that are declarations of the judgments he said would come against his unrepentant church.

So, if you are claiming faith in Jesus Christ, but you are still in bondage (addiction) to sin (or specific sins), don’t expect to escape God’s judgments.

And, for you saints of God who are facing much rejection and persecution and mocking because of your stand on the Word of Truth, be encouraged. Don’t let their mocking get to you. Don’t let persecution and rejection move you away from your pure devotion to the Lord or from God’s calling on your life. Keep on speaking the truth in love, even if you are hated in return.

Why So Downcast?

An Original Work / December 21, 2012
Based off Psalm 42

Why so downcast, O my soul,
And why so disturbed now within me?
Put your hope in Jesus Christ,
For I will praise His name.
He’s my Savior and my God,
So therefore I’ll remember Him through
Storms and tempests sweeping o’er me.
Still I’ll praise His name.
Put your hope in God.

By day the Lord sends forth His love.
In the night His song is with me.
I pray to the God of my life.
I will praise His name. I say to God my Rock,
“Why must I be called to suffer this way?”
Foes attack me; Satan sneering.
Still I’ll praise my God.
Put your hope in Him.

As a deer pants for the waters,
So my soul pants for You, O God.
My soul thirsts for God who’s living.
When can I meet Him?
My tears have been my food at night,
When men say, “So, where is your God?”
I pour out my soul to my God.
I’ll still praise His name.
Shout with joy to Him.

Slaves of Sin or of God?

Romans 6:15-16 ESV

“What then? Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?"

So, you call yourself a Christian, a follower of Jesus Christ, because one day you made a decision to believe in Jesus as your Savior, and so you assume you are good to go regardless of your willful, habitual, and premeditated sin against God and your total lack of respect for Almighty God.

You think because you prayed a prayer, or you confessed your sins at an altar once, or because you made a public declaration of Jesus as Lord that you are now guaranteed heaven as your eternal destiny, even though you spit at him in the face every time you sneak behind closed doors to engage in your secret sin, and then you lie about it, hoping no one will know.

God is not fooled! You may be able to fool some people, but you can’t fool God. He sees all and he knows all. Nothing is hidden from his sight!

So, does that describe you? Let’s examine that further.

What is a slave? He is one who is in bondage to another. Someone else has control over his life and can dictate what he can or cannot do. He is not free to do whatever he wants. Someone else rules his life.

As human beings outside of genuine faith in Jesus Christ, we are slaves to sin. Sin and Satan have dominion over us. We are not free from their control, although we are not excused on that account, because we do choose to remain or to be free (See Romans 1). We do choose who we want to be slaves to.

So, how do we know if we are a slave to sin or a slave to God? It all comes down to who we obey. Do we walk in obedience to our Lord, making it our practice (our habit) to do what he says, and to follow him in his ways? Or, do we walk in obedience to sin, the flesh, and the devil, doing what they dictate?

Do you not know that if you walk (in practice) in obedience to sin and the flesh that it will result in death, not eternal life with God? And, do you not realize that walks of obedience to our Lord are what lead to righteousness and result in eternal life with God? (Rom. 6:1-23; Rom. 8:1-17).

Romans 6:17-19 ESV

“But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness. I am speaking in human terms, because of your natural limitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness leading to sanctification.”

Oh, I would welcome the news that all who profess faith in Jesus Christ truly are no longer slaves to sin, but that they are now slaves to God and to his righteousness! But, sadly so, that is not the condition of most professers of faith in Jesus Christ, at least not here in America.

Too many people who profess faith in Jesus Christ are not walking according to the Spirit, but they are still walking according to the flesh, living to satisfy the sinful cravings of the flesh. The flesh, thus, is their god whom they worship, and to whom they give their undivided loyalties and devotion.

So, how does this relate to the gospel of our salvation?

Many people these days are saying that we are not required to turn away from our sins (to repent), or to obey our Lord and his commandments, and that we are not required to submit our lives to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. But, does that fit with this passage of Scripture?

The whole point of Jesus’ death on a cross was to free us from our slavery to sin and that we might now become bond-slaves of God and of his righteousness. For, the righteous requirement of the law is fulfilled in us who walk, not according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit (Rom. 8:1-17).

So, when we believe in Jesus Christ, and we die with him to sin, that we might walk in newness of life in him, we are delivered from our slavery to sin. And we now become slaves of our Lord’s righteousness, which is evidenced by our walks of obedience to the standards of conduct he set out for us to obey, and to which we are now committed.

Before we believed in Jesus, we were slaves to impurity and to lawlessness leading to more lawlessness. But now that we have become slaves of Christ and of his righteousness, it should result in us living pure, upright, godly, moral, honest, and faithful lives in the power of God’s Spirit now living within us, who is moving us to walks of obedience and away from sin. And, this leads to our sanctification, our holiness, which is of God.

Romans 6:20-23 ESV

“For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

I remember still the first time, as I read this, that I realized what this was saying. If we are slaves of sin, i.e. if sin is what we practice, if we are still under the control of sin and addiction to sin, then we are free in regard to righteousness. We are not slaves of righteousness. We are not righteous in God’s sight, for we are not under the influence of righteousness at all.

And, again, if we are still in bondage to sin, with sin ruling our hearts, so that we consistently and habitually obey sin instead of God, the end of these things is death, not life everlasting with Jesus Christ (Rom. 8:1-17; Lu. 9:23-26; 1 Jn. 1:5-9; 1 Jn. 2:3-6; Gal. 5:16-21; Gal. 6:7-8; Rom. 2:6-8).

But if we have been set free from sin, by God’s grace, through faith in Jesus Christ, and we are now slaves of God and of his righteousness, the fruit (result) we get leads to sanctification (holiness), and its end is eternal life.

So, the last verse here (v. 23) is one of those famous and often misquoted verses in the Bible. It is often misquoted and misinterpreted because it is usually taken out of its context.

So, when it says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord,” we must interpret what this means in its context.

This is not saying that the free gift of eternal life with God means we do nothing, or that nothing is required of us. It is free because Jesus shed his blood on a cross to pay the price for us to be able to receive that gift. We do nothing to earn or to deserve it. We only have eternal life with God because of what Jesus did for us on that cross.

But… the gift is not freedom to continue to live in sin while claiming heaven as your eternal destiny. This passage in Romans 6 alone makes that abundantly clear! The gift is freedom from our slavery to sin and it is empowerment of the Spirit of God to now walk in holiness and in righteousness for the glory and praise of God (Eph. 4:17-24).

Footprints of Jesus

Lyrics by Mary B. Slade, pub. 1871
Music by Asa B. Everett

Sweetly, Lord, have we heard Thee calling,
Come, follow Me!
And we see where Thy footprints falling
Lead us to Thee.

Though they lead o’er the cold, dark mountains,
Seeking His sheep;
Or along by Siloam’s fountains,
Helping the weak.

If they lead through the temple holy,
Preaching the Word;
Or in homes of the poor and lowly,
Serving the Lord.

If Thy way and its sorrows bearing,
We go again,
Up the slope of the hillside, bearing
Our cross of pain.

Then, at last, when on high He sees us,
Our journey done,
We will rest where the steps of Jesus
End at His throne.

Footprints of Jesus,
That make the pathway glow;
We will follow the steps of Jesus
Where’er they go.

By No Means!

Romans 6:1-4 ESV

“What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.”

By no means! Amen!! Jesus didn’t die that horrible death on a cross so that we could continue living in sin without guilt. He didn’t allow himself to be crucified on a cross and to take all our sin upon himself just to forgive us our sin so that we can escape hell and go to heaven when we die.

The reason he died was to put sin to death in our lives so that we would no longer live (walk) in sin, and so that we might walk with him in newness of life, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness (Eph. 4:17-24).

Oh, and I love this question: “How can we who died to sin still live in it?” Exactly!! How can we? That is a very sensible and reasonable question. And, how can so many people be teaching that we can still walk in sin? And, how can so many people be following those lies, too?

For, our salvation from sin is not merely deliverance from hell. But it is deliverance from our slavery to sin. For, when we trust in Jesus Christ to be Lord and Savior of our lives we are baptized (spiritually speaking) with Christ into his death, and his death was death to sin, not just forgiveness of sin.

Romans 6:5-11 ESV

“For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. For one who has died has been set free from sin. Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.”

We are united with Christ in death to sin. By God’s grace, through God-given faith in Jesus Christ, our old self is crucified with Christ so that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we are no longer enslaved to sin. For, this is why Jesus died, to free us from our addiction (bondage) to sin. So, we must consider ourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

So, how is that so many people today don’t get this? How is that so many preachers today are teaching that we don’t have to die to sin, but that we can keep on in our sin and still have heaven guaranteed us? How can people read this chapter of Romans 6 and still walk away believing in the cheap grace gospel?

For, the cheap grace gospel requires no death to sin and no living to God and to his righteousness. It requires no submission to Christ and his cross, and no walks of obedience to our Lord’s commands. It teaches that one can be “saved” and be bound for heaven, and they can still live in their sin.

But the whole purpose of Jesus’ death on that cross was that we might die with him to sin and live to him and to his righteousness. So, we are to leave our sinful lifestyles behind us, and we are to be changed of the Spirit of God in heart and mind, and now we are to walk in holiness according to the Spirit of God (Rom. 8:1-17; 1 Jn. 1:5-9; Eph. 4:17-24; Tit. 2:11-14).

Romans 6:12-14 ESV

“Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.”

So, again, how can anyone read this and walk away from it believing the cheap grace gospel? You literally have to ignore Romans 6 to believe that you can be saved from your sins, be bound for heaven, but that you can continue in your sinful addictions, and that God is just going to look the other way.

If we are saved from our sins, that means we died with Christ to sin, and if we died with Christ to sin, then sin should no longer reign in our bodies, in our flesh. We should no longer be under the power and control of sin and Satan, but we should now be operating under the power of God’s Spirit.

So, we should no longer be living to fulfill the lusts of our flesh. We should no longer be those who serve other gods, or who are still in slavery (addiction) to sin, for Jesus set us free! Sin should no longer be what we practice. It should not be our habit, our “go to” whenever we feel sad or angry or lonely or depressed.

So, in all practicality, this means that holiness and godliness should be what we practice, but not in the sense of a performance, but in the sense of our lifestyle which is given over to the Lord to live for him and to do his will, in his power and strength.

So, God’s grace is not free license to continue living in sin, only now without guilt. God’s grace, which brings salvation, instructs us to say “NO!” to ungodliness and fleshly lusts, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives while we wait for Jesus’ return (Tit. 2:11-14; cf. Eph. 4:17-24).

For, if we walk according to our flesh, and not according to the Spirit, we will die in our sins, not have eternal life with God (Rom. 8:1-17; Lu. 9:23-26).
