“Salvation is far from the wicked,
For they do not seek Your statutes.”
“The sum of Your word is truth,
And every one of Your righteous ordinances is everlasting.” (Psalm 119:155,160 NASB1995)
Who are the wicked in the eyes of God? They are all who live
wickedly, in practice. They are liars, deceivers, adulterers, murderers, and
all who do evil. They are all for whom sin is their practice, and not walks of
obedience to our Lord and to his commands. And this has nothing to do with what
their lips profess, only in the sense that some or many of them profess faith
in Jesus Christ with their lips while they deny him by how they live. So,
according to the Scriptures, they will not inherit eternal life with God.
And when this says that the wicked do not seek the statutes
of God, we need to understand that this includes many who profess faith in
Jesus Christ with their lips but who willfully deny and ignore the commands of
our Lord under the New Covenant so that they can continue living in sin without
conscience, and while proclaiming heaven as their eternal destiny. And they
take Scriptures out of context and they twist them to say what they do not
teach if taught in the correct biblical context, so they can keep sinning.
But God’s Word is truth. And all his promises have
conditions. And all his promises need to be read in their appropriate context,
and not out of context, so that the people know the conditions for those
promises. For many people are quoting John 10:28-30, and they are applying
those promises of God to everyone who makes a profession of faith in Jesus
Christ. But verse 27 says, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they
follow Me.” We have to listen to God and to obey His commands.
And then we have people who love to quote Romans 6:23 which
says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life
in Christ Jesus our Lord.” And they like to teach from this that we can make a
profession of faith in Jesus Christ and now all our sins are forgiven for
eternity and heaven is now secured for us when we die, but now regardless of
how we live. But the previous verses make it clear that if we are still living
in slavery to sin, that the outcome of those things is death, not life eternal.
And then we have people who love to quote Romans 8:1 which
says, “Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ
Jesus.” And they assume that because they gave lip service to God that they are
now “in Christ Jesus.” But then as we read on we see the condition for this
promise. It is for all who do not walk (in conduct) according to the flesh but
according to the Spirit. It is for all who are putting sin to death, by faith
in Christ, and who are now walking in holiness and in obedience to God.
Then we have people who like to quote John 3:16, which says,
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever
believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” But many don’t define
“belief” and they don’t have the correct verb tense, which is whoever “believing”
in Him, which indicates something that is a continual process. And belief in
Jesus is persuaded of God as to his holiness and righteousness, and of our
sinfulness, and of our need to die to sin and to obey God in practice.
So, when this says that salvation is far from the wicked,
for they do not seek the statutes of God, this isn’t speaking of just people
who don’t believe in Jesus who do bad stuff, but it is speaking of all people,
no matter what they profess with their lips, who make sin their practice and
not obedience to God. Salvation will be far from them unless they repent of
(turn from) their sins and they now obey God, in practice, and not sin. So,
please take this to heart, for your salvation depends on you obeying the truth
of God’s Word.

My sheep hear me.
They know me.
They listen to my
voice and obey.
I call them and lead
them.
They know my voice,
so they follow me.
They will never
follow strangers.
They will run away
from them.
The voice of a
stranger they know not;
They do not follow
him.
So, I tell you the
truth that
I am the gate, so
you enter in.
Whoever does enter
Will find
forgiveness and will be saved.
Nonetheless whoever
enters
Not by the gate;
other way,
He is the thief and
a robber.
Listen not, the
sheep to him.
Oh, I am the Good
Shepherd,
Who laid his own
life down for the sheep.
I know them. They
know me.
They will live with
me eternally.
The thief only comes
to steal and
