Sheep in the Midst of Wolves

Matthew 10:16 ESV

 

“Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.”

 

Jesus called his 12 disciples together and he sent them out to the “lost sheep of Israel” (to those professing faith in God but not in truth) to tell them that the kingdom of heaven is at hand, and to do the works that Jesus did. And then he warned them, letting them know that he was sending them out as sheep in the midst of wolves (people who behave like wolves) and that they would be delivered up to be flogged, and that they would be dragged before governors and kings, but that they were not to be anxious about what to say for the Spirit would give them the words to speak.

 

And then he went on to tell them that brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and that children will rise against their parents and have them put to death, and that they would be hated by all for his name’s sake. But, he said, “the one who endures to the end will be saved.” But they were to have no fear of anyone who would come against them, but they were to speak whatever the Lord gave them to say even if they were put to death for speaking the words of God to the people. And this parallels over to Matthew 24 which is about the last days.

 

And, as followers of Jesus Christ, our Lord is sending us out, too. We are to be the light of the world and the salt of the earth, and we are to proclaim the excellencies of him who called us out of darkness into his wonderful light. And we are to be his witnesses, and we are to make disciples of Christ of people of all nations, and we are to teach them to obey our Lord’s commandments (New Covenant). And when we do this, we are going to face opposition. And the closer it gets to our Lord’s return the more severe the persecution will be. But we are to hold fast to our Lord through it all.

We Have an Anchor

Will your anchor hold in the storms of life,

When the clouds unfold their wings of strife?

When the strong tides lift and the cables strain,

Will your anchor drift, or firm remain?

 

It is safely moored, ’twill the storm withstand,

For ’tis well secured by the Savior’s hand;

And the cables, passed from His heart to mine,

Can defy that blast, through strength divine.

 

When our eyes behold through the gath’ring night

The city of gold, our harbor bright,

We shall anchor fast by the heav’nly shore,

With the storms all past forevermore.

 

We have an anchor that keeps the soul

Steadfast and sure while the billows roll,

Fastened to the Rock which cannot move,

Grounded firm and deep in the Savior’s love.
