John 14:21-24 ESV
“’Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.’ Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, ‘Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?’ Jesus answered him, ‘If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father’s who sent me.’”
Now, I know that this is contrary to what most people are
teaching today as the gospel message. And many people dismiss Jesus’ words here
as Old Covenant, but Jesus was teaching New Covenant. So what this is saying is
that to love God/Jesus is to obey his commandments (New Covenant), even though
at that time in history the Jews were still under the Old Covenant, and thus
they still had to obey it. But I say “New Covenant” because this is speaking of
God (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) living inside of those who love the Lord and
who obey Jesus’ words. They will make their home with us.
But let me give you some supportive Scriptures so that you
know that this is New Covenant teaching:
Romans 2:6-8: He will render to each one according
to his works: 7 to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and
honor and immortality, he will give eternal life; 8 but for those who
are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there
will be wrath and fury.
Php 2:12-13: Therefore, my beloved, as you have
always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in
my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God
who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.
1 John 2:3-6: “And by this we know that we have
come to know him if we keep his commandments. Whoever says “I know
him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him,
but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this
we may know that we are in him: whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in
the same way in which he walked.”
1 John 2:15-17: “Do not love the world or the things in
the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not
in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the
desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the
world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does
the will of God abides forever.”
1 John 3:4-10: “Everyone who makes a practice of
sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. 5 You know that he
appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. 6 No one who
abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him
or known him. 7 Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices
righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous. 8 Whoever makes a
practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from
the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of
the devil. 9 No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God's
seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of
God. 10 By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the
children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God,
nor is the one who does not love his brother.”
1 John 3:24: “Whoever keeps his commandments
abides in God, and God in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by
the Spirit whom he has given us.”
1 John 5:2-3: “By this we know that we love the
children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. For this is
the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not
burdensome.”
2 John 1:6: “And this is love that we walk
according to his commandments; this is the commandment, just as you have
heard from the beginning, so that you should walk in it.”
Romans 6:16: Do you not know that if you present
yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey,
either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to
righteousness?
Hebrews 5:9: “And being made perfect, he became the
source of eternal salvation to all who obey him.”
1 Peter 1:1-2: Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To
those who are elect exiles of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia,
Asia, and Bithynia, 2 according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the
sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and
for sprinkling with his blood: May grace and peace be multiplied to you.”
James 1:21-25: Therefore put away all filthiness and
rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able
to save your souls. 22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only,
deceiving yourselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a
doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror.
24 For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like.
25 But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and
perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be
blessed in his doing.

Oh,
to Be Like Thee, Blessed Redeemer
Lyrics
by Thomas O. Chisholm, 1897
Music
by W. J. Kirkpatrick, 1897
Oh, to be like Thee! blessèd Redeemer,
This is my constant longing and prayer;
Gladly I’ll forfeit all of earth’s
treasures,
Jesus, Thy perfect likeness to wear.
Oh, to be like Thee! full of
compassion,
Loving, forgiving, tender and kind,
Helping the helpless, cheering the
fainting,
Seeking the wandering sinner to find.
O to be like Thee! lowly in spirit,
Holy and harmless, patient and brave;
Meekly enduring cruel reproaches,
Willing to suffer others to save.
O to be like Thee! while I am pleading,
Pour out Thy Spirit, fill with Thy
love;
Make me a temple meet for Thy dwelling,
Fit me for life and Heaven above.
Oh, to be like Thee! Oh, to be like Thee,
Blessèd Redeemer, pure as Thou art;
Come in Thy sweetness, come in Thy
fullness;
Stamp Thine own image deep on my heart.
