Ephesians 5:15-21 ESV
“Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.”
Colossians 3:16-17 ESV
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”
We are instructed in the Scriptures as followers of Jesus
Christ to address one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs. So this
is a song You and/or I would sing to the church for the encouragement and
edification of the body of Christ, for their spiritual growth and maturity, to
help them to not fall back into sin, or to help them to not follow false
teachings, but so they will walk with the Lord in holiness and in righteousness
and so they will not be fearful and so they will trust the Lord with their
lives, etc.
And it could be a song that the Lord Jesus gave us to write
for the encouragement of the body of Christ. So, if it comes from God, and if it
is thus gifted to us to write it for the body of Christ, for their
encouragement, then we are to then give it to the body of Christ. So who does
it then belong to? Well it belongs to the Lord first because he is the one who
gave it to us to write and to share, and then when we share it with the body of
Christ we are gifting it to them, so now it belongs to them.
And it is the same with the things that we write which are
not put to music. If God gives us something to write, and we write down what he
gives us, and we share it with the people we are supposed to share it with, who
then does it belong to? It is God’s, but then he gives it to us, but then we
give it to the church or to specific people he wants us to share it with. So it
is God’s first and then it belongs to whoever he gave us to share it with. It
is not ours to keep and to hold on to so that others can’t have access to it.
Mark 12:14-17 ESV
“Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not? Should we pay them, or should we not?” But, knowing their hypocrisy, he said to them, “Why put me to the test? Bring me a denarius and let me look at it.” And they brought one. And he said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” They said to him, “Caesar's.” Jesus said to them, “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's.” And they marveled at him.
And that brings me to this passage of Scripture, for so many
Christians are copyrighting everything they write, including songs they write,
including old hymns that are for the church, the body of Christ. And so other
Christians do not have access to them unless they get access to the copyright
or they are given permission to share them or whatever. But if the writings and
if the songs come from God, and they are gifted to us to share with the body of
Christ, they are not ours to copyright. They are not ours to keep. They don’t
belong to us. They are ours to give away.

John, the Baptist, called of God to
Make straight the way for the Lord,
Told his disciples about Jesus,
So two of them followed Him.
One of them who followed Jesus
Told his brother, Simon Peter,
Who then he brought to the Savior,
Who had told them, “Come and see.”
Jesus Christ, our Lord, Messiah,
On his way to Galilee found a man, Philip,
So he told him, “I want you to follow Me.”
Philip then found his friend,
And he told him, “We have found the one
The prophets spoke of – He is Jesus!”
Philip then said, “Come and see.”
Jesus saw the man, Nathanael,
While he sat beneath a fig tree,
Even before Philip called him,
So Nathanael did believe.
Nonetheless the Lord said,
“You believe because of what I told you.
You will see much greater things than these
If you will Come and see.”
Jesus’ calling to each one of us.
He tells us to believe in Him
As our Lord and Messiah,
And to follow where He leads.
He says we must turn from our sins,
Die to sin and self each day,
And put on our new lives in Jesus;
Bow before Him; humbly pray.
