At the time this was written by Jeremiah, under the inspiration of the Spirit of God, the Jews only (biblical Israel of that time) were God’s chosen people. Today God’s chosen people are all who are of genuine biblical faith in Christ, whether Jew or Gentile by physical birth. And all Jews who have rejected Jesus Christ as their Messiah are no longer God’s chosen people. But not all Israel of that time were of genuine biblical faith in the Lord God, just as not all who profess faith in Jesus Christ today are truly part of God’s family.

Jeremiah 6:10-11 BSB (Berean Standard Bible)
This is what the Lord of Hosts says:
“10To whom can I give this warning?
Who will listen to me?
Look, their ears are closed,
so they cannot hear.
See, the word of the LORD has become offensive to them;
they find no pleasure in it.
11But I am full of the LORD’s wrath;
I am tired of holding it back.”
Now, in this writing, this will be addressed to all who
profess faith in Jesus Christ but who are not living the faith which they
profess. For so many are listening to the teachings of man (humans) and they
are ignoring the teachings of God in the New Testament under the New Covenant
God has with His people Israel (Jew and Gentile by faith in Jesus Christ).
Thus, many are believing lies taught by humans while they are also being taught
to reject the truth of the gospel taught by Jesus and by his NT apostles.
So many prospective or professing Christians are being
taught that they do not have to deny self, die to sin (repent), and obey God in
life practice. They are being taught that all they have to do is “believe,”
which is not usually biblically defined. But the faith to believe in Jesus is
not of our own doing, but it is of God, and it is gifted to us by God, and it
is persuaded of God as to His righteousness and holiness, and of our
sinfulness, and of God’s requirement that we must turn from our sins and obey
God in practice.
Jeremiah 6:13-15 BSB (Berean Standard Bible)
“13For from the least of them to the greatest,
all are greedy for gain;
from prophet to priest,
all practice deceit.
14They dress the wound of My people
with very little care,
saying, ‘Peace, peace,’
when there is no peace at all.
15Are they ashamed of the abomination they have committed?
No, they have no shame at all;
they do not even know how to blush.
So they will fall among the fallen;
when I punish them, they will collapse,”
says the LORD.
Now this does not apply to everyone who professes faith in
Jesus Christ today. But it could very well describe the majority of those
calling themselves Christians today. For it appears that the majority are now buying
into an altered “gospel” message, which is not the gospel taught by Jesus and
by His apostles. And they are being taught to just enjoy life, to go the easy
way, that God can’t even see when they sin anymore, and if they feel guilty for
sinning that they should just claim “who you are in Christ.”
But we are not “in Christ” by faith in Him unless, by that
faith we have denied self, died to sin, and we are now walking (in conduct) in
obedience to our Lord and to His commands, as a matter of life practice. And
this is not to say that we will never sin (1 John 2:1-2), but that sin must no
longer be our habit, our practice, i.e. what we keep going back to over and
over again with the same results, and without biblical repentance. But there is
no “peace” for those who continue in sin and who do not obey God in life
practice.
Jeremiah 6:16-19 BSB (Berean Standard Bible)
16This is what the LORD says:
“Stand at the crossroads and look.
Ask for the ancient paths: ‘Where is the good way?’
Then walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls.
But they said, ‘We will not walk in it!’
17I appointed watchmen over you and said,
‘Listen for the sound of the ram’s horn.’
But they answered, ‘We will not listen!’
18Therefore hear, O nations,
and learn, O congregations,
what will happen to them.
19Hear, O earth! I am bringing disaster on this people,
the fruit of their own schemes,
because they have paid no attention to My word
and have rejected My instruction.”
This happens to be one of my most favorite Old Testament
passages of Scripture. So, what are crossroads? They can be a physical place
where two roads meet and cross, or they can have to do with a critical point in
anyone’s life where a major choice must be made as to which direction to go,
i.e. which path to take, but not just physically, but morally and spiritually. And
the latter is what is intended here. We all must make the choice to either
follow God in obedience or to keep doing things “our way,” by the flesh.
So, what are “the ancient paths”? Where is “the good way”?
They are the truths of the Scriptures which teach us that we must die to sin
and live for God, and that daily we must die to sin and walk in obedience to
the Lord. And we are not talking Old Covenant here. We are talking New Covenant
teachings which were also taught in the Old Testament. If we do not die to sin
and obey our Lord, in the power of God, by biblical faith in Him, which comes
from God, we do not have salvation from sin nor eternal life in him.
And who are the “watchmen” of God today? They can be man or
woman, but they must be those whose lives are surrendered to the will and
purpose of God for our lives, as taught in the Scriptures in the correct
biblical context. And our assignment from God is to share with the people what
the Scriptures teach about God/Christ and our salvation, and to warn the people
against falling into sin and against believing the lies of the enemy, and to
call the people to repentance and to obedience to our Lord and to His commands,
and to warn of judgment if they choose their sins over God.
Sadly, so many are not listening to the watchmen and to the
Scriptures and to the Word of God written for us in the Scriptures, but they
are listening to human flesh and to the teachings of man (humans) which are of
the flesh and not of God, and not in agreement with the Scriptures taught in
their correct biblical context. And they are listening to the “feel good”
preaching which tells them that they can keep on in their sin and that God will
not judge them since they professed faith in Jesus Christ. But they are
listening to lies, and that will not end well for them. For hell will be their
destiny.

When I lift up my voice, and sing
praise unto God,
I will fellowship with my Lord and
Savior, King.
In Him there is no darkness. He is in
the light of truth.
If we walk in His light, from sin He
purifies.
If we repent of our sins, He’ll
forgive us now,
When we humble ourselves, and before
Jesus bow.
The man who says, “I know Him,” but
does not obey His truth,
There is no truth in him. In darkness
still he’s found.
Do not love the world of sin, for it
is hell bound.
If you follow the world, you’ll not in
Christ be found.
The world and its desires will not
last; they’ll expire.
The one who does God’s will, receives
eternal life.
See that what you have heard from
Christ remains in you.
Then, you’ll remain in Christ, and in
His Father, too.
This is what He promised us – His
eternal life with God.
So, continue in Him, and you’ll
receive a crown.
