On July 26, 2026, the Lord led me to write a devotional based off Psalm 11, which I then posted on the internet. Today He is leading me back to this passage of Scripture to talk some more about what it is teaching and how this can be applied to our lives and to our world today.
Psalm 11:1-3 BSB (Berean Standard Bible)
In the LORD I take refuge.
How then can you say to me:
“Flee like a bird to your mountain!
2For behold, the wicked bend their bows.
They set their arrow on the string
to shoot from the shadows at the upright in heart.
3If the foundations are destroyed,
what can the righteous do?”
Truth vs Lies
If we who are of genuine biblical faith in Jesus Christ
teach or share the teachings of the Scriptures, we teach Christ crucified, dead
and buried, raised from the dead, ascended to heaven, and one day coming again
to judge the people of the earth and to take His faithful bride to be with Him
for eternity. We teach that by God-gifted faith in Jesus, which is not of our
own doing, we deny self, die to sin, and we follow our Lord in obedience to His
commands as a matter of life practice, all in His power, for the glory of God.
But in today’s world, and within probably the majority of
institutional church gatherings partnered with the state and with the world in
unholy unions, not many people seem to be teaching the biblical gospel of
Christ. But many are teaching an altered gospel message intended to tickle
itching ears and to coddle sinners in their sin rather than to call them to
repentance and to obedience to God and to His commands, in moral purity,
committed to Christ and to His service, in honor of Him for what He did for us
on that cross.
And lately I have been made aware of an approach to
Christianity which was unfamiliar to me before. I don’t know what to call it,
but it excuses away addictive and sinful behaviors in the lives of the sinfully
addicted, and it gives them an excuse for their sinful behaviors to free them
from feelings of guilt. It is a product of modern psychology which teaches that
addictive behaviors may (or do) stem from past trauma or past hurt of some kind.
And thus the addict looks to someone else on whom to blame for their sins.
The Foundations Being Destroyed
So what they are doing, in reality, is that they are destroying
the foundations of the gospel of our salvation, they are rejecting the calls
for repentance and obedience to our Lord’s commands, and they are rejecting all
teachings which can make sinners feel guilty for their sins. If they can remove
the guilt then sinners have no desire to feel the need to repent and to obey
God in practice and to forsake forever the sins which have bound them, perhaps
for many years. For now they are free to sin guilt free.
Can past hurts have an impact on our emotions and behaviors?
Yes, they can. But we are still responsible before God for what we do in
response. We still know right from wrong. We still know good from evil. Even if
we sinned in response to trauma or hurt caused by other people, we still did
wrong, and that still needs to change. We can’t excuse away our sin based on
how other people treated us, or on how we felt that they treated us. We have to
forgive those we believe wronged us and repent and obey God in practice.
For the real reason that people sin against God is due to
what is stored up in their hearts:
“18But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these things defile a man. 19For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, and slander. 20These are what defile a man…” (Matthew 15:18-20 BSB) “The good man brings good things out of the good treasure of his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil treasure of his heart. For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.” (Luke 6:45 BSB)
So, if anyone sins deliberately and habitually, out of a
past trauma or hurt, it is because that hurt or that trauma have not been let go
of, and there may remain resentment, bitterness, unforgiveness, hate, a desire
to get even, and/or to treat others as they were treated, etc. Someone in your
past hurt you and so you hurt others. You sin against others as you believe you
were sinned against. So you blame the hurt for your sin. But you have to blame
what is still in your heart that needs to be put to death at the cross of
Christ.

“4The LORD is in His holy temple;
the LORD is on His heavenly throne.
His eyes are watching closely;
they examine the sons of men.
5The LORD tests the righteous and the wicked;
His soul hates the lover of violence.
6On the wicked He will rain down fiery coals and sulfur;
a scorching wind will be their portion.
7For the LORD is righteous; He loves justice.
The upright will see His face.”
God Loves Justice
Past hurts and past trauma will not be accepted by God as an
excuse for continued, deliberate, and habitual sin against God and against
other humans. The Lord is examining the hearts of each one of us, and He is
testing us, and He demands that we must come to the cross of Christ, deny self,
die to sin, and obey Him as a matter of life practice, in His power. We must
let go of all sin, and that includes all bitterness, resentment, and
unforgiveness if stored up in our hearts which is then leading to sin.
If we do not deny self, die to sin, and obey God, in
surrender to His will and in submission to His commands, but if we continue in
deliberate, habitual, and addictive sinful behaviors, regardless of what
excuses we might come up with, God will still judge us. And all who have
disregarded His commands, and who have continued on a path of sinful rebellion,
and who are not living holy lives, pleasing to God, in the power of God, will
be rejected by God. And hell will be their eternal destiny, not heaven. Please
take this to heart!!

Sovereign Lord says:

voice speaking;
Hear what I say to

Please pay
attention;
Your God instructs,
teaches the right way.”
In that day the Lord
Almighty
Will be a glorious
crown for
The remnant, His
people;
He’s the source of
strength to

evil; turns from sin.
