“With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints, and pray on my behalf, that utterance may be given to me in the opening of my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in proclaiming it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.” (Ephesians 6:18-20 NASB1995)
Prayer does not have to be something formal and ritualistic
where you set aside a specific time each day to bring your requests to the
Lord, where you get on your knees and bow your head and close your eyes and clasp
your hands in prayer. For prayer is communication and conversation between us
and God, and we are to pray without ceasing. So prayer, in reality, is open
communication between us and our Lord 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, at any
time of day or night, even while doing chores or driving a vehicle.
But it is true that prayer must be conscious and deliberate
communication between us and our Lord. We must be intentional about spending
time with our Lord in conversation, bringing our requests to him, praying for
his guidance and direction in our lives, and seeking his will and purpose. But
it is to be something, too, which is constant in that we are always listening
to hear the voice of God speaking to our hearts, and we are always in an
attitude of prayer to where we can speak to the Lord at any moment.
And then we are to pray “in the Spirit,” meaning that our
prayers should be united with God in purpose, according to his expressed will
for our lives, and according to His Word, and not against his will and purpose
for our lives, i.e. not for selfish and worldly purposes and pleasures. And if
we are not certain of God’s will in any matter, I believe we should pray, “Nevertheless,
not my will, but Thine be done.” We should always seek after the will of God and
not look to God to be our “genie in a bottle” there to grant our every request.
And, as believers in Jesus Christ, we are to be praying for
one another, also according to the will of God, and not for selfish purposes.
And for those among us who are sharing the Good News of the Gospel of Christ,
in truth and in righteousness, according to God’s Word taught in context, we
should be praying that God will give them the right words to say and that the
words will get to the people, and that the people would be receptive to the
gospel message, and that many would die to sin and obey God, by faith in Jesus.
For faith in Jesus Christ, which comes from God, which is
gifted to us by God, and which is persuaded of God, and not of our own doing,
results in us dying with Christ to sin and being raised with him to walk in
newness of life in him, no longer to live as slaves to sin, but as slaves to
God and to his righteousness, in walks of obedience to his commands. It is what
Jesus taught, and what his New Testament apostles taught. And they taught if
sin is still our practice, and not obedience to God, we do not have life in Christ.
