“The eye is the lamp of your body; when your eye is clear, your whole body also is full of light; but when it is bad, your body also is full of darkness. Then watch out that the light in you is not darkness. If therefore your whole body is full of light, with no dark part in it, it will be wholly illumined, as when the lamp illumines you with its rays.” (Luke 11:34-36 NASB1995)
Our eye is our judgment, our discernment, the ability to
judge between good and evil, right and wrong, healthful and harmful, and truth and
lies, etc. So, when our judgment is clear, i.e. when it is of a single
undivided focus, without a double agenda, which is focused on Christ and on his
teachings and on his gospel truth, then our whole being is full of light
(Christ, truth, righteousness, godliness, moral purity, uprightness and faith
in Christ).
But when our judgment and discernment is not clear, but it
is bad – evil, wicked, immoral, dishonest, and full of malice, mischief, and
disobedience to God and to his commands – our body is full of darkness (sin,
wickedness). And this happens when we choose to ignore the Lord and his commands
and to do what is evil, instead, deliberately, habitually, defiantly, and
willfully against God and his will and purpose for our lives, because of pride.
Then watch out that the light in you is not darkness. So,
what is this saying? There are a lot of people today professing faith in Jesus
Christ with their lips, believing that all their sins are forgiven and that
heaven is secured for them when they die. So they believe they are in the
light, when truly they are still in the darkness. So what they think is the
light is really darkness, because they have accepted a lie and not the truth of
the gospel of Jesus Christ.
For we cannot just give lip service to the Lord and then
presume upon him that he is going to let us into his heaven. For Jesus taught
that not everyone who says to him, “Lord, Lord,” will enter the kingdom of
heaven, but the one DOING (obeying) the will of God the Father who is in heaven.
And God’s will (his commands) for our lives should be written in our hearts,
but they are also written down for us in the Scriptures, so we are without
excuse.
So, here is the thing. If we read the New Testament
Scriptures, and if we read them in their appropriate context, and not out of
context, and if we read book after book after book, we should soon begin to
realize that God sets a standard for who is of genuine faith in Jesus Christ
and who is not. Those who have died with Christ to sin and who are obeying him
in practice, are of God. Those who deliberately and habitually commit the same
sins repeatedly, and who do not obey God, are not of God. They are not saved.
And this is not saying that we will never fail or that we
will never sin again, for it is possible that we might sin (see 1 John 2:1-2).
But if we repent, and we obey God, in practice, and if we don’t continue on in a
habitual pattern of repeating the same sins over again, especially
deliberately, but obedience to God is our practice, as is holy living, then we
can be assured that we are in a right relationship with God and that we will
inherit eternal life with God.
And that really is what this passage of Scripture is
teaching, which is why it warns us to watch out that “the light” in us is not
darkness disguised as light. And that is a huge problem today because so many
people now are teaching and/or are believing that all they have to do is make a
profession of faith in Jesus Christ and heaven is secured them. But they are
not being taught that they must die to sin and obey God, in practice, to be In
Christ.
So, we need to be those who are living the truth of the
gospel and who are sharing the light and the truth of the gospel with all
people, whether professing Christian or not. For many are believing the lies
and not the truth, and they are headed to hell on the promise of heaven,
because they do not believe the gospel that Jesus and his New Testament
apostles taught, for they prefer the lies which do not make them have to give
up their sins.
“And He was saying to them all, ‘If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake, he is the one who will save it. For what is a man profited if he gains the whole world, and loses or forfeits himself? For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when He comes in His glory, and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.’” (Luke 9:23-26 NASB1995)

Lord, You are more precious than
silver.
Lord, You are more costly than gold.
Lord, You are more beautiful than
diamonds,
And nothing I desire compares to You.
Lord, Your Love is higher than
mountains.
Lord, Your Love is deeper than seas.
Lord, Your Love encompasses the
nations,
And yet, You live right here inside of
me!
Who can weigh the value of knowing
You?
Who can judge the worth of who You
are?
Who can count the blessings of loving
You?
Who can say just how great You are?
