Tell of His Salvation Day to Day

1 Chronicles 16:23-29 ESV

“Sing to the Lord, all the earth!

    Tell of his salvation from day to day.

Declare his glory among the nations,

    his marvelous works among all the peoples!

For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised,

    and he is to be feared above all gods.

For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols,

    but the Lord made the heavens.

Splendor and majesty are before him;

    strength and joy are in his place.

Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples,

    ascribe to the Lord glory and strength!

Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;

    bring an offering and come before him!”

Jesus Christ is God, the second person of our triune God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. He was with God in the beginning, and he is God, and he is our creator God. He made us. And God the Father sent his Son Jesus Christ to the earth to be born of a human mother yet conceived of the Holy Spirit. And while he walked the earth he was fully God yet fully man. He was not born in sin like we are, though, for God was his Father, not Joseph. And he never sinned, although he was tempted to sin like we are.

And God the Father sent his Son Jesus to the earth for a very specific reason, to become our pure sacrificial Lamb to be slain on a cross to take away the sins of the world. For Jesus, although he knew no sin, became sin for us on that cross so that when he died our sins died with him. And when he was raised from the dead, he rose victorious over sin, hell, death, and Satan on our behalf so that we could die with him to sin and live as conquerors over sin in the power of God and for his glory.

Now when Jesus Christ died on that cross to take away our sins, it was not to just remove the penalty of sin, but it was to deliver us from our slavery (addiction) to sin and to empower us to live godly and holy lives in obedience to our Lord and in surrender of our lives to Christ as Lord. For he died that we might die with him to sin and live to his righteousness and that we might now live for him and no longer for ourselves. For when he shed his blood for us it was to buy us back for God so we’d honor God with our lives.

But before his death he lived on the earth about 33 years. And the last 3 years, from what I understand, were the years of his ministry on the earth. He called 12 men to be his disciples to work alongside him in ministry and to be trained by him in holy living and in the truths of the gospel. And they went with Jesus from place to place where Jesus healed people of their sicknesses and their afflictions, and where he also raised the dead, and he delivered people from demons and fed the hungry, etc.

During his years of ministry on the earth he also taught the gospel of our salvation which is not like the gospel many people are teaching today. For Jesus taught the cost of following him. He said we must deny self and take up our cross daily (daily die to sin and to self) and follow (obey) him. For if we hold on to our old lives of living in sin and for self, we will lose them for eternity. But if we lose our lives for his sake, meaning we die with him to sin so we might live to his righteousness, then we have eternal life with God.

So, if our faith in Jesus is genuine God-given faith, then we are crucified with Christ in death to sin and we are raised with Christ to walk in newness of life in him, not like our old lives, but created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. So sin is to have no more dominion over our lives. We are to no longer obey sin, but we are to obey our Lord, in practice. Now we are to no longer walk (in conduct, in practice) according to our sinful flesh but now we are to walk according to the Spirit in holiness and in righteousness.

But if we decide that we don’t have to obey him and that we don’t have to die with him to sin but that we can continue in deliberate and habitual sin guilt free, then we need to know what Jesus and his New Testament apostles taught on that subject. For they all taught that we are going to reap what we sow. And so if we continue in deliberate and habitual sin, and if we do not walk in obedience to our Lord in holiness and in righteousness, then we don’t know God, he doesn’t know us, and we don’t have eternal life with him.
