2 Peter 2:1-3 ESV
“But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed. And in their greed they will exploit you with false words. Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.”
This is exactly what is happening today, and it is
permeating the church. We have wolves in sheep’s clothing serving in church
congregations in positions of pastors who are teaching their people that faith
in Jesus Christ requires nothing of them at all in the way of surrender of
their lives to Christ and walking in obedience to his commands, honoring him as
Lord (owner-master) of their lives and forsaking their sinful lifestyles, i.e.
dying with Christ to sin.
Some of them may teach holiness and righteousness, but many
are not teaching it as required for salvation from sin and for eternal life
with God. They are giving their adherents the false notion that they can be saved
and be on their way to heaven but that how they live their lives will not
impact their eternal security with God. It might get them less rewards in
heaven, some of them say, but they tell them their eternity is still secure.
And so that opens the door wide for people to “believe” in
Jesus but to keep on living in sin, making sin their practice. And one of the
biggest sins permeating the church today is sexual immorality, particularly
because of the ease of access to sexually explicit and pornographic material
with the touch of a fingertip on a computer the size of your pocket where no
one else can see what you are doing.
So, many are following the sensuality of these liars and
deceivers, these manipulators who take advantage of naïve and trusting people
and people who are weak in their faith and vulnerable to being deceived. Many
people are following these false teachers because they want to continue living
in their sins with the blessings of God on their lives, which is a false blessing.
For they want the resurrection without having to first die to their sins.
2 Peter 2:12-14 ESV
“But these, like irrational animals, creatures of instinct, born to be caught and destroyed, blaspheming about matters of which they are ignorant, will also be destroyed in their destruction, suffering wrong as the wage for their wrongdoing. They count it pleasure to revel in the daytime. They are blots and blemishes, reveling in their deceptions, while they feast with you. They have eyes full of adultery, insatiable for sin. They entice unsteady souls. They have hearts trained in greed. Accursed children!”
Many of these false teachers are teaching this false gospel
which gives free license for their adherents to continue in sinful practices
because they themselves are living in sin, engaged in all manner of evil. They
are liars, thieves, manipulators, adulterers, users, abusers, addicts, con
artists, and tricksters who may portend one thing while they live another. They
may give off an image of righteousness while they engage in all manner of evil.
And they are masters at enticing unsteady souls who are
vulnerable, trusting, and weak spiritually and therefore ripe to be tricked and
enticed and led astray. And they have no qualms at all about acting as though
they are righteous people while they are tricking you into buying into their
deceptions. They have no conscience at all about leading others into sin, either.
For they delight in that. They get great pleasure out of that, in fact.
But if they do not repent of their ways, they will one day
be destroyed. They may be successful now in fooling a lot of people but it will
not end well for them. They will face the judgment of God and they will not
inherit eternal life, but they will burn for eternity in the fires of hell. And
those who follow in their ways will be there with them if they also do not
repent and turn their hearts over to Jesus Christ and make him Lord of their
lives.
2 Peter 2:17-19 ESV
“These are waterless springs and mists driven by a storm. For them the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved. For, speaking loud boasts of folly, they entice by sensual passions of the flesh those who are barely escaping from those who live in error. They promise them freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption. For whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved.”
Now, this is the big thing. It isn’t just that they are
deceiving people, and it isn’t just that they are manipulating them and
enticing them to sin, and it isn’t just that they are lying to them and
teaching them a false gospel. But it is that they are promising them freedom
from the punishment of sin and eternal life with God based on a lie. So, a
whole lot of people are counting on going to heaven when they die, but hell is
truly their destiny.
And here is why this is the big thing. Jesus Christ died on
that cross that we might die with him to sin and live to him and to his
righteousness. He died that we might no longer live for ourselves but for him
who gave his life up for us. And he shed his blood for us on that cross to buy
us back for God (to redeem us) so we would now honor God with our lives. And he
died to free us from our slavery (bondage) to sin so we would no longer be
slaves of sin but slaves of righteousness (1 Pet 2:24; 2 Co 5:15; 1 Co 6:19-20;
Rom 6).
Jesus did not give his life up for us on that cross so we
would now continue living in sin guilt free. In fact, his word teaches us that
if we walk in sin, if we make sin our practice, and if we live in disobedience
to him, we do not have eternal life with God, but we will die in our sins. For
we are all going to be judged by our works, by what we do, not just by what we
profess. So, please know this, and please surrender your lives to Jesus today.

Mary, Did You Know?
Songwriters: Greene Lee Rufus / Lowry Mark Alan
Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Would one day walk on water?
Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Would save our sons and daughters?
Did you know that your baby boy
Has come to make you new?
This child that you delivered, will soon deliver you
Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Is Lord of all creation?
Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Would one day rule the nations?
Did you know that your baby boy
Is heaven's perfect Lamb?
That sleeping child you're
Holding is the great, I Am
Mary, did you know?
