Habakkuk 2

Then the Lord replied: "Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets so that a herald may run with it. For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false. Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay."

“Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’” (John 8:12 ESV)

Faith in Jesus Christ, that is God-persuaded and God-gifted, results in us being crucified with Christ in death to sin, and us being raised with Christ to walk in newness of life in him, no longer to live as slaves to sin, but as slaves to God and to his righteousness. So, we are no longer to let sin reign (be in control) in our mortal bodies to make us obey its desires. For if sin is what we obey, and not obedience to God, we will not inherit eternal life with God, but we will die in our sins (Ephesians 2:8-10; Romans 6:1-23).

So, if we continue living in sin after we have professed faith in Jesus Christ, and thus sin becomes our habit, and not obedience to the Lord, then we remain walking in the darkness still in slavery to sin. Thus we are not those who are walking in the light, in righteousness, in holiness, in freedom from slavery to sin, and as servants of the Lord in walks of obedience to his commands. And so if we claim to be in fellowship with God and to know God, then we are liars (see 1 John 1:5-10; 1 John 2:3-6; 1 John 3:4-10).

So, to follow Jesus Christ means to deny self, die daily to sin, and to walk in obedience to his commands. It means that he is now our Lord and Master, that our lives belong to him, and they are no longer ours to live however we want. And so if we are following him in this way, then we won’t continue to walk (in conduct, in practice) in deliberate and habitual sin. But now we will walk in righteousness and holiness and in obedience to our Lord (Luke 9:23-26; 2 Corinthians 5:15; 1 Peter 2:24; Titus 2:11-14; Romans 8:1-14).

So, if you make a profession of faith in Jesus Christ, and you now think that all your sins are forgiven, and that heaven is guaranteed you when you die, but while you continue to make sin your practice, and not walks of obedience to the Lord, then please know that the Scriptures teach that you will die in your sins, regardless of what you profess with your lips. For Jesus died in order to transform our lives, not so we go on unchanged (Matthew 7:21-23; Galatians 5:16-21; Ephesians 5:3-6; 1 Corinthians 6:9-10; Romans 2:6-8).
