Video Talk
Titus 2:11-14 ESV
“For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.”
There are many people today who are distorting the grace of
God, and they are making it into something it is not. From what I hear from
many other people, including from many preachers, is a teaching of God’s grace
that is more like a get-out-of-jail-free-card. They teach God’s grace only as
forgiveness of all sins (past, present, and future), the removal of punishment
of all sin, and as a guarantee of heaven when you die, but regardless of how
you live on this earth.
And so you will not hear many of them, if any, quoting this
passage from Titus 2, because this passage here contradicts what most of them
appear to be teaching with regards to God’s grace, our salvation, eternal life
with God, and works. For many of them are teaching that all you have to do is
just believe (not usually biblically defined) in Jesus once, and now all your
sins are forgiven, and now you are on your way to heaven, end of story. Some
people may talk about holy living, but not usually as a requirement.
And so many of their adherents have this impression that
they are now saved from all sins, and heaven is now guaranteed them, but with
no real understanding of what the Scriptures teach on the subject of God’s
grace, and of our salvation, et al. For most are not being taught what this
passage of Scripture teaches. I hear their conversations. And they see God’s
grace merely as a covering for their sins so that they can go on living in sin
scot-free. But that is the wrong concept of God and of Jesus and of God’s
grace.
So, it is my hope and prayer that as you read this passage
in Titus 2:11-14 today that you will take it to heart, and that this will be
your understanding of what God’s grace is all about – that it trains us to say “No!”
to sin and “Yes!” to God and to holy living in obedient walks of faith in our
Lord. And we are redeemed from all lawlessness (from disobedience to our Lord
and to his commands under the New Covenant). And we are purified of God for
himself to be zealous (excited, enthusiastic) for the good works of God which
he prepared in advance that we should walk in them (see Ephesians 2:10).
