Habakkuk 2

Then the Lord replied: "Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets so that a herald may run with it. For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false. Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay."

Fleshly Mindsets

Video Talk

Romans 8:1-8 ESV

“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God's law; indeed, it cannot. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.”

What I believe the Lord Jesus wants me to focus on with this passage of Scripture is about minds which are set on the flesh. And to illustrate this for me, he put an old secular song in my mind called, “Somethin’ Stupid.” And the premise of the song is that of a man who is trying to get this woman who appears to be someone who other men are pursuing, as well. So, he finally gets her alone, and then he says he spoils it all by saying something stupid like, “I love you.”

So, why is that a stupid thing for him to do? He says, “I can see it in your eyes that you despise the same old lies you heard the night before.” So he is lying to her, and she knows it. She knows he doesn’t really love her. And so he said that he practices every day to find some clever lines to say to make the meaning come through. So he is manipulative and deceptive, just finding ways he can get her to do what he wants her to do, which is probably to try to get her to sleep with him. That is the picture I am getting, anyway.

And then he continues by saying that the time is right for her perfume fills his head, etc. So, this is about lust, not love, and it is about lies, deception, and manipulation, to try to get someone else to do what you want them to do. And a person can call it love all he wants, but it isn’t love. And this is a clear picture of what it means to have your mind set on the flesh and not on the Spirit, and it doesn’t have to be in the area of sexual immorality, though that is HUGE today, but it can be anything prompted by the flesh.

So, let’s go back to the beginning of this passage of Scripture. Many people are stopping after reading the first verse and they are claiming for themselves “no condemnation,” for they assume if they made a profession of faith in Jesus Christ that it means that they are now “in Christ.” But that is not what this says. For it explains what it means to be “In Christ.” It has to do with us walking (in conduct, in practice) not according to the flesh, but now according to the Spirit. And it has to do with our minds being set on the Spirit and not on the flesh.

For what does this say? Its says that the mind set on the flesh (like in this secular song) is death, because the mind set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law. Now this is not speaking of the Old Covenant, but the New Covenant. But under the New Covenant we still have to obey our Lord and his commands (instructions, teachings). We are not to be lawless, for if we are, we will not inherit the kingdom of God. So if our minds are on the flesh, like in this song, then we cannot please God, and our lives will end in death, not in life eternal with God.

Broken Cord

An Original Work / August 29, 2018

Your bond is broken with your Lord and Savior

And your testimony is separate from Him.

Your words not matching your actions today.

Repent of your sin and bow down and pray.

Live what you testify in truth always.

Purity’s lacking in your life and witness,

For you profess one thing, but other you do.

Not moral, spiritual. Still of the flesh.

Not living in truth to what you confess.

Lying about it puts you in a mess.

Living a lie is your practice, ‘tis true of you.

Masquerade righteousness – none of it true.

Your heart is not given to your Lord God.

Because of how you live, you are a fraud.

Turn from your sin and give your life to God.
