The Way that is Blameless

Psalms 101:1-4,7 ESV

 

“I will sing of steadfast love and justice;

    to you, O Lord, I will make music.

I will ponder the way that is blameless.

    Oh when will you come to me?

I will walk with integrity of heart

    within my house;

I will not set before my eyes

    anything that is worthless.

I hate the work of those who fall away;

    it shall not cling to me.

A perverse heart shall be far from me;

    I will know nothing of evil.”

 

“No one who practices deceit

    shall dwell in my house;

no one who utters lies

    shall continue before my eyes.”

 

David, who is the psalmist here, said that he will ponder the way that is blameless. And we read in the New Testament that we are to do all things without grumbling or disputing, that we may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation. And Jesus reconciled us by his death in order to present us holy and blameless and above reproach before him, if we continue steadfast in the faith. And blameless means to be above reproach because morally pure.

And then David said that he would walk with integrity of heart and that he would not set before his eyes anything that is worthless. And integrity is honesty, honor, reliability, and uprightness. And worthless is good for nothing, useless, corrupt, and it is rubbish (nonsense, garbage, waste). So, if we are true believers in Jesus Christ, we should be people whose lives are characterized by honesty, uprightness, moral purity, and faithfulness. And our lives should not be characterized by what is worthless, good for nothing, corrupt, defective, immoral, and damaged by sinful practices.

 

And we will not be people who are just wasting away our lives on what is immoral, corrupt, and worthless in the eyes of God, in place of honoring the Lord with our lives and with our obedience and with our faithfulness and integrity and honesty and moral purity. For we were not put here on this earth to live for ourselves and for sinful pleasure and just to waste time being entertained incessantly. God has a purpose for our lives. He has spiritual gifts for us to use in encouraging the body of Christ, and he has assignments for us within the body of Christ, which are our ministries.

 

For Jesus said that if would come after him we must deny self, take up our cross daily (die daily to sin and to self) and follow (obey) him. For if we hold on to our old lives of living in sin and for self, we will lose them for eternity. But if for the sake of Jesus we die with him to sin, and we live to him and to his righteousness, then we have the hope of eternal life with him. For he said that not everyone who says to him, “Lord, Lord,” will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one DOING the will of God the Father who is in heaven (Luke 9:23-26; Matthew 7:21-23).

 

David continued by stating that he hated the work of those who fall away. He said it would not cling to him. And what kind of work is that? It is sinful, it is of the devil, it is not of God, it is worthless, and it is selfish. And it is self-indulgent and self-gratifying and for self-pleasure, because it is all about self, and it is of the flesh, and it is not of God. For when we live for ourselves and not for God, and we do what pleases the flesh, which displeases God, and so we refuse to honor the Lord with our lives, but instead we give honor to the flesh, then we are not really of God, even if we claim to be.

 

David also said that a perverse heart would be far from him, and that he would not be intimately acquainted with evil. And a perverse heart is a wicked, stubborn, obstinate, deviant, immoral, rebellious and disobedient heart which craves the sinful pleasures of the flesh, and so it does not yield to the working of the Holy Spirit. And sadly enough this describes many who profess faith in Jesus Christ but who are convinced that they can continue living in sin, only now without guilt and without punishment.

 

And lastly, at least for this writing, David said that no one who practices deceit shall dwell in his house and that no one who utters lies (is a liar) shall continue before his eyes. And God says the same thing, actually. For if we are those who make sin our practice, and if righteousness and godliness and obedience to our Lord are not what we practice, then regardless of what our lips have professed, we will not have eternal life with God, and heaven will not be our eternal destiny, and we are not saved from our sins. And so we need to take this to heart, and we need to take God’s word seriously.

The Spirit Calling

Hear the Spirit calling.

He’ll keep you from falling.

Tenderly He’s calling,

“Come and follow Him.”

 

Walk with Jesus daily.

Don’t give in to lazy.

Folks may call you crazy.

Fellowship with Him.

 

Follow where He leads you.

Eat what Jesus feeds you.

His love will renew you

If you follow Him.

 

Do what Jesus tells you.

Don’t let your faith fail you.

His love will avail you

If you walk with Him.

 

Jesus, Lord and Savior,

Reigneth now forever.

He gave us His favor

So we’d live with Him.

 

Turning now from our sin,

Holy Spirit live-in.

Holiness we walk in,

Purified by Him.
