Habakkuk 2

Then the Lord replied: "Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets so that a herald may run with it. For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false. Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay."

Eager to Preach the Gospel

“I am under obligation both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to the wise and to the foolish. So I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome. For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, ‘The righteous shall live by faith.’” (Romans 1:14-17 ESV)

Paul was called of God, of Christ Jesus to be one of his apostles in taking the message of the gospel of Christ to the Jews and to the Gentiles. Jesus appeared to him on a road to Damascus in a vision for this purpose,

“to appoint you as a servant and witness to the things in which you have seen me and to those in which I will appear to you, delivering you from your people and from the Gentiles—to whom I am sending you to open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me” (see Acts 26:12-18).

Paul, having then taken that call of God upon his life seriously, considered himself as obligated to preach the gospel to those for whom God called him to do so. And he was eager to preach the gospel to whomever the Lord sent him. And he was not ashamed of his Lord nor was he ashamed of the message of the gospel of our salvation. For he knew that the true message of the gospel was the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes in Jesus Christ with God-persuaded and God-gifted faith in him.

So, what was the truth of the gospel that Paul taught to the people? He taught that Jesus died on that cross in order that we who believe in him might die with him to sin and now live to him and to his righteousness. He taught that by faith in him we are crucified with Christ in death to sin, and raised with Christ to walk in newness of life in him, no longer to live as slaves to sin but now as slaves to God and to his righteousness. So sin is no longer to have mastery over our lives. For if sin is what we obey, we will die.

He did not teach as the gospel of our salvation what so many are teaching today. The “gospel” message which is permeating the American church today is a diluted and altered gospel which is telling the people that all they have to do is to “pray a prayer to receive Christ Jesus into their hearts,” or to make some sort of confession or profession of him as Lord and as Savior, or to give some sort of acknowledgement to who Jesus was and to what he did for us on that cross, or to just verbalize an acceptance of God’s “grace.”

But Jesus taught that if anyone would come after him that he must deny self, take up his cross daily (die daily to sin) and follow (obey) him. For if we hold on to our old lives of sin, we will lose them for eternity. But if for Jesus’ sake we deny self, die daily to sin, and follow him in obedience, in practice, then we have eternal life in him. For Jesus said that not everyone who says to him, “Lord, Lord,” will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one DOING the will of God the Father (Luke 9:23-26; Matthew 7:21-23).

So, we can’t just make a profession of faith in Jesus Christ and now all our sins are forgiven, heaven is guaranteed us, and it can’t be taken away from us, but regardless of how we live. Jesus and Paul and the other apostles taught a gospel of grace that teaches us to renounce (say ‘No’ to) ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives while we wait for our Lord’s return. For Jesus “gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works” (see Titus 2:11-14).

Therefore, belief in Jesus Christ is more than just words that we say, but it has to do with what we do in love response to our Lord in dying with him to sin and us now walking with him in obedience to his commands in holy living. For the righteous will live by faith. Faith has to do with how we live. And faith requires that we die with Christ to sin, not just once, but in practice, and that we now follow our Lord in obedience to his commands, also in practice. For if sin is what we practice, we will die in our sins.

Oh, to Be Like Thee, Blessed Redeemer

Lyrics by Thomas O. Chisholm, 1897

Music by W. J. Kirkpatrick, 1897

Oh, to be like Thee! blessèd Redeemer,

This is my constant longing and prayer;

Gladly I’ll forfeit all of earth’s treasures,

Jesus, Thy perfect likeness to wear.

Oh, to be like Thee! full of compassion,

Loving, forgiving, tender and kind,

Helping the helpless, cheering the fainting,

Seeking the wandering sinner to find.

O to be like Thee! lowly in spirit,

Holy and harmless, patient and brave;

Meekly enduring cruel reproaches,

Willing to suffer others to save.

O to be like Thee! while I am pleading,

Pour out Thy Spirit, fill with Thy love;

Make me a temple meet for Thy dwelling,

Fit me for life and Heaven above.

Oh, to be like Thee! Oh, to be like Thee,

Blessèd Redeemer, pure as Thou art;

Come in Thy sweetness, come in Thy fullness;

Stamp Thine own image deep on my heart.

Encouragement for Christians

Encouragement is good, wouldn’t you say?

We need it to survive throughout each day.

The people in our lives spurring us on

Are such a blessing from God – Christ His Son.

But what if we don’t have it? What to say?

Can we still make it through this anyway?

E’en if all forsake us, what say you then?

Christ will ne’er forsake us. So say Amen!

For Christ, He did not promise life with ease.

Said we must forsake our sins, Him to please.

Said we would be hated by men with pride,

Who try to take so many for a ride.

So do not be discouraged, trust your life

Into the hands of God and have not strife.

Let Him be your support on every day,

But thank Him for the folks He sends your way.

Mutually Encouraged by Each Other's Faith

“First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is proclaimed in all the world. For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I mention you always in my prayers, asking that somehow by God's will I may now at last succeed in coming to you. For I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to strengthen you— that is, that we may be mutually encouraged by each other's faith, both yours and mine.” (Romans 1:8-12 ESV)

This was Paul writing to the church in Rome. And by “church” I don’t mean institutions of human origin, buildings built by human hands, businesses (not-for-profit) incorporated under the state, church denominations, civic centers, and social clubs. I mean the body of Christ comprised of all who are of genuine faith in Jesus Christ across the globe, i.e. the universal body of Christ. We the people of God, who have been crucified with Christ in death to sin, and raised with Christ to walk in newness of life in him, are the church.

These whom he was thanking were those of genuine faith in Jesus Christ, whose faith in Jesus Christ was being proclaimed in all the world. And the faith that Paul taught is not what is commonly being taught as faith in Christ today. For if you read all of his writings, you will see that he taught that genuine faith in Christ results in us dying with Christ to sin, not just once, but daily, and us walking in obedience to our Lord in holy living and in submission to him and to his will for our lives (see Romans 6:1-23).

[Rom 1:18-32; Rom 2:6-8; Rom 6:1-23; Rom 8:1-14,24; Rom 12:1-2; Rom 13:11; 1 Co 1:18; 1 Co 6:9-10,19-20; 1 Co 10:1-22; 1 Co 15:1-2; 2 Co 5:10,15,21; 2 Tim 1:8-9; Gal 5:16-21; Gal 6:7-8; Eph 2:8-10; Eph 4:17-32; Eph 5:3-6; Php 2:5-11: Col 1:21-23; Col 3:5-17; Tit 2:11-14; Heb 3:1-19; Heb 4:1-13; Heb 9:28; Heb 10:23-31; Heb 12:1-2]

So Paul was thankful to God for those of genuine walks of faith in Jesus Christ, and he prayed for them regularly. And he prayed that he would be able to see them in person in order to encourage them in their walks of faith and in obedience to the Lord, and to minister to them and to their needs. He prayed that he might impart to them some spiritual gift to strengthen them in their walks of faith in the Lord Jesus in obedience to his commands. And he desired that they all would mutually encourage one another in the Lord.

And this is what the purpose is of the body of Christ, that we might encourage one another in our walks of faith and in obedience to our Lord in holy living. Yet this isn’t just about saying “nice” things to make people feel good about themselves, but this involves exhortation (holy urging) so that none of us are led astray by sin’s deceitfulness. And this involves us speaking the truth in love to one another so that we are not led astray by the cunning and craftiness of other humans in their deceitful scheming.

All this, too, is to help strengthen us in our walks of faith in obedience to the Lord so that we will be those who are not only living the truth of the gospel, but who are sharing the truth of the gospel with others. And it is so that, via mutual encouragement, that we will all grow together to spiritual maturity in Jesus Christ, our Lord, as each part does its work and is allowed to do its work within the fellowship of the body of believers in Jesus Christ. Speaking the truth in love to one another we, thus, can all grow in Christ together.

[Matt 5:13-16; Matt 28:18-20; Jn 4:31-38; Jn 13:13-17; Jn 14:12; Acts 1:8; Acts 2:14-18; Acts 26:18; Rom 10:14-15; Rom 12:1-8; Rom 15:14; 1 Co 12:1-31; 1 Co 14:1-5; Gal 6:1; Eph 2:8-10; Eph 4:1-16; Eph 5:11-27; Eph 6:10-20; Php 2:1-8; Col 1:9; Col 3:12-16; Tit 2:11-14; Heb 3:13; Heb 10:23-25; Jas 5:19-20; 1 Pet 2:9,21; 1 Jn 2:6; Jude 1:22-23]

And this is what the gatherings of the church are to be all about. Our gatherings are to be for the purpose of mutual fellowship in the Lord and in exhorting (holy urging) one another in our walks of faith and obedience to our Lord in holy living, and in praying for one another’s needs. And each one of us is to have a part in that where we minister to one another the love of God and the truths of God’s word so that we will all walk in holiness and in righteousness, in obedience to our Lord, and in sharing the true gospel.

And this can take place in person with people anywhere that we want to meet together, any day of the week, and any time of day or night agreeable to everyone. We do not have to be locked into specific times or locations for our gatherings for them to be gatherings of the church. Therefore, these gatherings may also take place virtually, on the internet, where we can gather together with other believers in Christ in order to mutually encourage one another in our walks of faith and in obedience to our Lord Jesus Christ.

Love Must Be Genuine

An Original Work / October 22, 2013

Based off Romans 12:9-21

Love must be genuine.

Hate what’s evil; cling to good.

Love each other with affection.

Show respect for ev’ryone.

Never lack in your zeal.

Serve the Lord with diligence.

Rejoice in steadfast hope.

In affliction, patient be.

Keep on praying; share with others.

Practice hospitality.

Bless those who persecute.

Feel with others sympathy.

Be not filled with conceit.

Daily sit at Jesus’ feet.

Live in harmony with others.

Live at peace with ev’ryone.

Repay not to someone

With the evil he begot.

Do not take your revenge;

Leave it to the wrath of God.

If your enemy is thirsty,

Give to him something to drink.

Do what’s right for mankind.

Evil: overcome with good.

For By Grace

This song is based off Ephesians 2:8-9 (NIV 1984): “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.”

Salvation is a free gift from God. We do nothing to earn it or to deserve it. The Scriptures say: “In while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). “There is no one righteous, no not one” (Romans 3:10). “All we like sheep have gone astray” (Isaiah 53:6). “All have sinned and fall short of attaining God’s glory” (Romans 3:23). “The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23).

We receive this free gift by God’s grace and through faith: “Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out” (Acts 3:19). “God now commands everyone to repent” (Acts 17:30). “You must turn to God in repentance and have faith in our Lord Jesus” (Acts 20:21). “You should repent and turn to God and prove your repentance by your deeds” (Acts 26:20). “If anyone loves Jesus, he will obey His teaching” (John 14:23). “If we obey Jesus’ commands, we will remain in his love” (John 15:10). “We know we have come to know him if we obey his commands” (I John 2:3).

For By Grace

An Original Work / January 27, 2012

Based off Ephesians 2:8-9

For by grace we’ve been saved

Of all our sins,

So that with Christ Jesus

Our lives begin.

Cleansing us from sin,

He made pure within

All who trust in Him

As their Savior, friend,

So that with Christ Jesus

Our lives begin.

We’ve been saved through faith;

This not from ourselves,

Lest that we should boast

In our fleshly works.

Our salvation is

A gift from our God,

Who loves us so much

That He gave His Son

To die on the cross

For all of our sins.

So repent of all

Of your sins today,

And He’ll forgive you;

Wipe your sins away.

Obey all of His

Teachings given you,

So that you can walk

With Him now in truth;

So that you can walk

With Him now in truth.

For the Sake of His Name

“Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures, concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations, including you who are called to belong to Jesus Christ, to all those in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.” (Romans 1:1-7 ESV)

Paul was a servant of the Lord Jesus Christ, as we are all to be who follow Jesus with our lives. And he was called to be an apostle, which was his body part assignment from the Lord. And he was set apart for the gospel of God, which we are also if we are true servants of the Lord Jesus, serving him in our assigned body parts, doing what his word teaches we should all be doing as his followers. And we are all to be sharing the truth of the gospel with the ungodly, and we are to be encouraging one another in the body of Christ.

[Matt 5:13-16; Matt 28:18-20; Jn 4:31-38; Jn 13:13-17; Jn 14:12; Acts 1:8; Acts 2:14-18; Acts 26:18; Rom 10:14-15; Rom 12:1-8; Rom 15:14; 1 Co 12:1-31; 1 Co 14:1-5; Eph 4:1-16; Eph 5:17-27; Php 2:1-8; Col 3:16; Heb 3:13; Heb 10:23-25; 1 Pet 2:9,21; 1 Jn 2:6]

And the gospel of our salvation is fundamentally this: Jesus Christ is God, the second person of our triune God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. He always was, and he always existed with God, and he is our creator God. But he left his throne in heaven, came to earth, and he was born as a baby to a human mother, but conceived of the Holy Spirit, and not of man. So while he lived on the earth he was fully God and fully human. But he came for one main purpose which was to save us from our slavery to sin.

During his years of ministry on this earth he healed the sick and the afflicted, raised the dead, comforted the sorrowful, fed the hungry, delivered people from demons and performed many other miracles. He also preached repentance for the forgiveness of sins, and the necessity of submission to him as Lord, and obedience to his commands and holy living, all as required for salvation from sin and for eternal life with God. For not everyone who calls him “Lord” will enter heaven, but the one DOING the will of God the Father.

But the religious leaders of his day did not like him. They hated him, in fact, and they were jealous of him and threatened by his temporary popularity among the people who he was healing and performing miracles. So they did all sorts of things to try to trip him up with his words in order to accuse him of wrongdoing, but they were unsuccessful. So they plotted out a way to have him crucified on a cross as though he was a common criminal because he claimed to be God, which is who he is, in fact. And that took place.

But it was the will of God that Jesus, our perfect sinless Lamb offering for our sins, should die on that cross and then be raised from the dead. For by faith in him we can now be crucified with him in death to sin and raised with him to walk in newness of life in him, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. For in Jesus’ death he put our sins to death with him so that we might be delivered from our slavery to sin and now walk in holiness and in righteousness in obedience to him, in his power.

But this is not optional for the life of a believer in Jesus Christ. We must die with Christ to sin, not just once, but daily. And we must follow our Lord in obedience to his commands, in practice, and we must live holy and godly lives in the power of God to the honor and praise of our Lord or we do not have fellowship with God, we do not know God, and we are not born of God, and we will not enter into God’s eternal kingdom, regardless of what faith we profess in him with our lips.

For we who are called to be his saints are those of us who are called to live holy lives, pleasing to our Lord, separate (unlike, different) from the world (the ungodly) because we are being made to be like Jesus in character, mind, thinking, attitude, and behavior, by the grace of God. We are no longer to look like, act like, speak like, and think like the ungodly of this world, but we are to be taking on the character of Almighty God, by the grace of God, as we cooperate fully with God’s work of grace in our lives.

[Isaiah 53:1-12; Matt 7:21-23; Matt 26:26-29; Lu 9:23-26; Lu 17:25; Jn 1:1-36; Jn 6:35-58; Jn 8:24,58; Jn 10:27-33; Jn 20:28-29; Rom 5:8; Rom 6:1-23; Rom 8:1-14; Rom 9:5; 1 Co 6:9-10,19-20; 1 Co 11:23-32; 1 Co 15:1-8; 2 Co 5:15,21; Eph 4:17-24; Php 2:5-11; Col 2:9; Tit 2:11-14; Heb 1:8-9; Heb 2:14-15; Heb 4:15; 1 Pet 2:24; 2 Pet 1:1; 1 John 3:4-10]

A Believer’s Prayer

An Original Work / July 31, 2012

With my whole heart, Lord, I pray

To be Yours, and Yours always.

Lead me in Your truth today.

May I love You, and obey.

Lead me in Your righteousness.

When I sin, may I confess;

Bow before You when I pray;

Live for You and You always.

Love You, Jesus, You’re my friend.

Life with You will never end.

You are with me through each day,

Giving love and peace always.

You will ne’er abandon me.

From my sin You set me free.

You died on that cruel tree,

So I’d live eternally.

Soon You’re coming back for me;

From this world to set me free;

Live with You eternally.

Oh, what joy that brings to me.

I will walk with You in white;

A pure bride, I’ve been made right

By the blood of Jesus Christ;

Pardoned by His sacrifice.

Why are You Cast Down?

“As a deer pants for flowing streams,

    so pants my soul for you, O God.

My soul thirsts for God,

    for the living God.

When shall I come and appear before God?

My tears have been my food

    day and night,

while they say to me all the day long,

    ‘Where is your God?’

These things I remember,

    as I pour out my soul:

how I would go with the throng

    and lead them in procession to the house of God

with glad shouts and songs of praise,

    a multitude keeping festival.

“Why are you cast down, O my soul,

    and why are you in turmoil within me?

Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,

    my salvation and my God.

“My soul is cast down within me;

    therefore I remember you

from the land of Jordan and of Hermon,

    from Mount Mizar.

Deep calls to deep

    at the roar of your waterfalls;

all your breakers and your waves

    have gone over me.

By day the Lord commands his steadfast love,

    and at night his song is with me,

    a prayer to the God of my life.

I say to God, my rock:

    ‘Why have you forgotten me?

Why do I go mourning

    because of the oppression of the enemy?’

As with a deadly wound in my bones,

    my adversaries taunt me,

while they say to me all the day long,

    ‘Where is your God?’

“Why are you cast down, O my soul,

    and why are you in turmoil within me?

Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,

    my salvation and my God.” (Psalms 42:1-11 ESV)

Are you able to identify with this Psalmist in any way, either from a time in your past or in your present life? I definitely can from times past, and I can connect with parts of it in my life present. For if we are those who are followers of Jesus Christ, whose desire is for him, to do his will, we are going to go through times of difficulty, persecution, and rejection. And we will have people who will speak evil of us and who will mock us and who will deride us. And if we have compassionate hearts, that should bring us to tears.

And if our hearts are not guarded, our tears may turn to depression and to withdrawal and to us pulling away from doing the will of the Lord. And perhaps they may even lead us to questioning God and his sovereignty over our lives. And we may cry out to God and say, “Why, God, is this happening to me?” And that says that we have not yet reached that place of spiritual maturity in our lives to where we understand and accept the sovereignty of God over our lives, and when we can accept suffering as something good.

And that may lead many sincere followers of Christ to pull back and to no longer do what they were doing in ministry in obedience to the Lord, out of fear of rejection and persecution, or out of being convinced that all the doors that were open for them are now closed. So they get discouraged and downcast and they give up hope, at least temporarily, until they are able to work through their emotions in prayer to the Lord, and in counseling themselves, so that they will return to serving the Lord as they once had.

And if we ever get to that point in our Christian lives, and in Christian ministry, to where we are discouraged and disheartened, and our emotions are telling us to give up and to run away, we need to give ourselves biblical counsel. And we need to work through those emotions in prayer. And we must get into the Scriptures and study them in their context and let the Holy Spirit speak truth to our hearts, whether or not our emotions are yet there. For Satan is definitely hot on our trail to convince us to give up and run.

And we must remind ourselves of days gone by when we were following the Lord as we ought, and how the Lord carried us through every difficult circumstance, and how he supplied for our every need. And we should drag out the old hymns of the faith and sing them out loud. And if we journal, we should go back and read where the Lord has encouraged us before in our trials and tribulations. And we must reassure ourselves of our Lord’s provisions for us and how he will not leave us or forsake us.

For Satan will glory in these times in our lives when he can get us to be so downcast that we will desert God’s callings upon our lives, and when we will run from serving the Lord rather than to serving God with our lives. So, if your emotions are beginning to go that direction, stop! Pray! Read the Scriptures! Sing songs, hymns and spiritual songs out loud! Claim the promises of God that he has for his followers. Believe Him! Trust Him! And keep moving forward in the strength and wisdom and power of God!!

No Matter What

No matter what your circumstances,

You can trust in Jesus Christ.

So, in all of your happenstances,

Please don’t give up now to strife.

I understand in life is hardship,

Pain to bear as part of life.

Now Jesus suffered much for freedom

From our sin, for sin is rife.

So trust Him as your Lord and Savior.

Turn from sin and follow Him.

Let Him wrap His arms around you.

Know that you have been forgiv’n.

Now follow Jesus where He leads you,

Walk with Him in righteousness.

Give Him all your circumstances.

He will free you from duress.
