Habakkuk 2

Then the Lord replied: "Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets so that a herald may run with it. For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false. Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay."

Global Big Brother

Friday, April 20, 2012, 6:49 a.m. – The Lord woke me this morning with the song, “No Less,” playing in my mind. As I lay in bed praying through present circumstances in my life, the Lord gave me a brief vision of a man standing outside the front door of our house, only he was standing off to the west side, and he was north of me as I stood on the other side of the door from him looking outside the window. The man was someone I knew, i.e. he is someone who frequently appears in dreams and visions given to me, and he usually represents global “Big Brother,” only in the sense of “Big Brother” in the book “1984” (http://www.gradesaver.com/1984/study-guide/short-summary/). The man was wearing glasses that had a thick black frame. The man also had a scowl on his face, i.e. he had a look of intimidation. End

Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening. I read Zechariah 10 (NIV 1984):

Ask the LORD for rain in the springtime;
   it is the LORD who makes the storm clouds.
He gives showers of rain to men,
   and plants of the field to everyone.
The idols speak deceit,
   diviners see visions that lie;
they tell dreams that are false,
   they give comfort in vain.
Therefore the people wander like sheep
   oppressed for lack of a shepherd.  “My anger burns against the shepherds,
   and I will punish the leaders;
for the LORD Almighty will care
   for his flock, the house of Judah,
   and make them like a proud horse in battle.
From Judah will come the cornerstone,
   from him the tent peg,
   from him the battle bow,
   from him every ruler.
Together they will be like mighty men
   trampling the muddy streets in battle.
Because the LORD is with them,
   they will fight and overthrow the horsemen.   “I will strengthen the house of Judah
   and save the house of Joseph.
I will restore them
   because I have compassion on them.
They will be as though
   I had not rejected them,
for I am the LORD their God
   and I will answer them.
The Ephraimites will become like mighty men,
   and their hearts will be glad as with wine.
Their children will see it and be joyful;
   their hearts will rejoice in the LORD.
I will signal for them
   and gather them in.
Surely I will redeem them;
   they will be as numerous as before.
Though I scatter them among the peoples,
   yet in distant lands they will remember me.
They and their children will survive,
   and they will return.
I will bring them back from Egypt
   and gather them from Assyria.
I will bring them to Gilead and Lebanon,
   and there will not be room enough for them.
They will pass through the sea of trouble;
   the surging sea will be subdued
   and all the depths of the Nile will dry up.
Assyria’s pride will be brought down
   and Egypt’s scepter will pass away.
I will strengthen them in the LORD
   and in his name they will walk,”
            declares the LORD.

My Understanding: The Lord was speaking here to his covenant people, and the message has not changed. We are to ask the Lord both for spiritual, and for physical blessings and provisions, for he is our creator and sustainer; our provider and the giver of good gifts. We are to seek his counsel, advice and direction for our lives and future, for he is the one who made us, and he is the one to direct our steps and to show us the way to go. We are to put our trust in his sovereignty over our lives, and to trust that he is the one in control, and that he will work out the things in our lives according to his purposes and for his glory.

We are not to put our trust in man or in the idols of men: fame, fortune, acceptance, prestige, entertainment, and/or human intellect and reasoning, etc. We are not to find our comfort in the things of this world, or to look to men to bring comfort that only God can provide. In other words, we should not seek out a false comfort or sense of security in things or in men – their wisdom, philosophies, etc. Men tell lies. The pleasures of this world are deceptive in that they speak a false message of self-gratification when they tempt us to find our solace in them.

Comfort in Vain

Yet, this also speaks to the subject of false teachers (shepherds) who tell lies to people for the express purpose of deception. Yet, some of these leaders are just repeating the lies they have heard, and they ignorantly proclaim them as truth, I believe. One of the biggest lies of Satan that I am aware of that is hitting the church in America, in particular, is the false gospel that teaches hope of eternal life absent of true repentance (turning from sin) and obedience to Christ and to his commands, as required for salvation, and as done in the power and working of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer as he cooperates with that work.

By convincing people that they can be in genuine relationship with Jesus Christ, and have the hope of eternal life in heaven, while circumventing repentance and obedience, they give the people “comfort in vain,” because they promise them heaven without telling them the truth of the cost of following Christ. Thus, the people wander like sheep without a shepherd, because their leaders are leading them astray with a false hope, and they are leaving them still under the control and power of sin.

God was angry against those leaders in Zechariah’s day, and I believe he is angry against the national leaders and church leaders in the USA (the west) today, and he will punish those shepherds of the people of this nation, and in the church in this nation, who have lied to the people, and who have promised the people freedom while knowingly or ignorantly deceiving the people for their own advantage, i.e. in order to build their own earthly kingdoms. These leaders are leading the people away from their pure devotion to Jesus Christ by not telling them the truth of the gospel, i.e. by withholding the truth (or some of it) in order to please men and to say what their itching ears want to hear. They don’t want to offend them with the truth of the gospel, because they want their own “kingdoms” to prosper. And, telling them the cost of following Christ would not be “good business.”

“Big Brother”

I believe the vision of (global) “Big Brother” at the door of our house (America/the church) is a picture of the coming judgment on this nation and on its leaders, both in the government and in the church. The Lord (our cornerstone) will bring this judgment, and when he does, all will be affected by it. The Lord will use the judgment in the life of the church to bring his people to repentance and back to her “first love.” God/Jesus Christ will then be the only shepherd for God’s people. I believe this will take place in the time known as the tribulation period to come on the earth. God will remove human leaders from their positions of power, and he will bring this nation into a time of judgment to where we will have to depend entirely on the Lord for everything. We will no longer turn to idols – things our hands have made – to bring us comfort. I do believe this time is “at the door,” i.e. it is imminent.

The man in my vision who symbolized “Big Brother” (globally) was wearing glasses with thick black frames. Eye glasses are used to correct defective vision, and vision has to do with insight, wisdom, discernment, judgment, etc. Black is the absence of light, and light is truth and righteousness, so black is often symbolic of what is evil and sinful. A frame is a border, casing, structure, framework, construction, a body, a trap or to entrap, trick or entice; a surrounding structure. So, these lenses (perhaps a device that focuses a beam of electrons or radiation – Encarta) are encased in a framework or structure (organization) that is thick with evil (like the antichrist or the beast of Revelation). I believe they represent “the battle bow” that will come against these shepherds of the people, that they are of this global “Big Brother,” and that they will be used to correct the defective discernment and judgment, not just of the leadership, but of the people who have been led astray by the false teachers and who have bought into their lies. The purpose will be to correct defective vision, i.e. to bring people to repentance and faith in Jesus Christ and to revive the church. And, truly that will be the Lord’s way of delivering his people and of strengthening them.

Jesus, Our Cornerstone

Jesus Christ is our cornerstone. This is a prophecy (in the whole of Zechariah) concerning his coming as shepherd, Savior, ruler and judge. The first time he came, he came to save us from our sins. He will come again one day to rescue us physically from this evil world, at which time he will also judge the earth and its inhabitants. Yet, this will be preceded by a time of judgment on the earth at his hand that is called the Tribulation period. Some people believe the church will be raptured out before that time takes place. I believe the church will be here during the tribulation period, and that God will use this time to purify his bride and to make her ready for her husband and their wedding. And, I believe Zechariah 10 is about that time when God judges and he purifies his people; and when he revives and renews them, because they responded to correction with repentance and renewed faith.

This prophecy, though, also encompasses Jesus Christ’s coming to earth to be born as a baby (human flesh), his life and ministry on the earth, his crucifixion on the cross for our sins, his resurrection, and the coming of the promised Holy Spirit to indwell the lives and hearts of true believers in Jesus Christ. Because Jesus Christ sent his Holy Spirit to live in our hearts, the Lord is always with us. He gives us the strength we need in battle (spiritual warfare) against our enemy, Satan, through the power of the working of his Holy Spirit within us. He promises us his provisions and blessings, and his strength and power against our enemy, yet implied in here is that we the people have turned from their (our) wicked ways and their (our) idolatry and misdirected trust in man, and they (we) have turned to trusting in the Lord Jesus as their (our) only Shepherd (Lord).

When the Lord comes in judgment on this nation (and world), and he revives his adulterous and idolatrous church, then his people collectively will walk in his name. A person’s name is his character, and his word, integrity, etc. So to walk in the name of the Lord means to live life in keeping with God’s holy and righteous character, by his divine power at work within us. Also, to walk in someone’s name means to be his representatives or ambassadors, which we, as his followers, are supposed to be, and in fact are, for good or for bad. If we are truly walking in his character, and we are walking in truth, integrity, righteousness and holiness, and we are following him and obeying him as his servants and messengers, then we are his ambassadors for good, as though Christ were making his appeal through us. We are his servants and witnesses to tell the world about Jesus Christ and to share his gospel.

I believe walking in Christ’s name also means that, because of all Jesus Christ has done for us, that we, as his followers, can do no less than praise, love and serve him with our whole being. May we delight today in walking in his name, and in following him wherever he leads us.

No Less / An Original Work / March 19, 2012

I can do no less than praise You,
Lord, for all You’ve done for me.
You died for my sins to save me,
So I would be set free.
I adore You! Lord, I praise You!
Jesus, Savior, King of kings!
You provided my redemption.
Your grace has pardoned me.

I can do no less than serve You.
Lord, Your witness I would be,
Telling others of Your love,
And why You died on that tree.
Tell of how You gave of Your life,
So from sin we’d be set free,
So we could worship You forever,
And live eternally.

I can do no less than love You,
Lord, for You have first loved me.
You gave of Your life so willing,
Because You cared for me.
Turn from my sin! Obey freely!
Live for You each passing day.
Read Your word, and follow Your lead,
Lord, as I humbly pray.

The Flock of His People

Wednesday, April 18, 2012, 8:14 a.m. – The song, “Full Release,” was playing in my mind again this morning when I awoke. Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening. I read Zechariah 9 (quoting vv. 9-17 NIV 1984):

The Coming of Zion’s King

Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion!
Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem!
See, your king comes to you,
righteous and having salvation,
gentle and riding on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
I will take away the chariots from Ephraim
and the war-horses from Jerusalem,
and the battle bow will be broken.
He will proclaim peace to the nations.
His rule will extend from sea to sea
and from the River to the ends of the earth.
As for you, because of the blood of my covenant with you,
I will free your prisoners from the waterless pit.
Return to your fortress, O prisoners of hope;
even now I announce that I will restore twice as much to you.
I will bend Judah as I bend my bow
and fill it with Ephraim.
I will rouse your sons, O Zion,
against your sons, O Greece,
and make you like a warrior’s sword.
The LORD Will Appear

Then the LORD will appear over them;
his arrow will flash like lightning.
The Sovereign LORD will sound the trumpet;
he will march in the storms of the south,
and the LORD Almighty will shield them.
They will destroy
and overcome with slingstones.
They will drink and roar as with wine;
they will be full like a bowl
used for sprinkling the corners of the altar.
The LORD their God will save them on that day
as the flock of his people.
They will sparkle in his land
like jewels in a crown.
How attractive and beautiful they will be!
Grain will make the young men thrive,
and new wine the young women.

My Understanding: The Daughter of Zion is now the church, the saints of God. Zion is the kingdom of God, personified in Jesus Christ. Believers in Jesus Christ, as his body, are also Zion. Yet, at the time of this writing, this was speaking to the people of God, the Jews, i.e. to the nation of Israel. It was a prophecy concerning their promised Messiah, Jesus Christ.

Our King

They were to rejoice, because their King, Jesus Christ, was coming in righteousness and having salvation, though when he came they did not recognize him as such, they did not receive him as their Messiah (not as a nation), and, in fact, they were the ones who hung him on a cross to die, because they hated him, were jealous of him, and thus rejected him.

When Jesus rode into Jerusalem for his triumphal entry a week prior to his crucifixion on a cross for our sins, part of this prophecy was fulfilled. And, when he was crucified on the cross for our sins, more of it was fulfilled. Yet, much of it is yet to take place, for this prophecy encompasses, not only his coming to the earth the first time, and his death on a cross for our sins, but it also encompasses his return one day for his bride and his millennial kingdom reign on the earth, at which time his saints will reign and rule with him.

Jesus Christ, God the Son, the second person of our triune God, came to earth, was born as a baby (took on human flesh), and he dwelled among us. He went through the same kinds of things as we go through on a daily basis. He took on human flesh, not only so he could be our sin sacrifice, but so he could be our compassionate and merciful high priest. He suffered as we suffer, he rejoiced as we rejoice, he was persecuted, abandoned, rejected, thought to be crazy, a liar, and was even accused of being of Satan. It was not the enemies of God’s people who were against him, either. It was his own people who rejected him. Even his own family turned against him and wanted to take him home because they thought he was crazy. He was probably an embarrassment to them. And, much of his temple leadership was jealous of him, and they harassed him at every turn. And, eventually they killed him.

“He will proclaim peace to the nations.”

Many people take this out of context and misinterpret the kind of peace that Jesus preached. If we compare scripture with scripture we may find apparent contradictions to this by his own words when he said:

“Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to turn

“‘a man against his father,
a daughter against her mother,
a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law—
a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’

“Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it…” ~ Matt. 10:34-39

Yet, John 14 helps explain this seeming contradiction when it says (Jesus’ words):

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” ~ John 14:27

The kind of peace that Jesus proclaimed was not world peace, i.e. he didn’t proclaim absence of conflict, war, struggles, trials and tribulations in this life, but the peace he proclaimed was peace with God through faith in His Son, Jesus Christ. In other words, he preached a peace that freed us of bondage to sin and that freed us of the wrath of God in sending us to hell, basically, and he preached inward peace in relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ, which provided absence of fear. This kind of peace promises a hope of eternal life with God, yet it also promises his abiding presence with us always; his love, compassion, tenderness, comfort, and his power and strength of His Spirit to see us through all the difficulties we will face in this life, and for some of us, they are many. It is a peace that comes from trusting in his absolute sovereignty over all things, and in understanding that he is in control, even when circumstances in our lives may be completely chaotic.

He does not promise peace in the sense of absence of conflict, because he told his disciples the cost of following him. They would be hated, persecuted, abandoned, rejected, mistreated, imprisoned and even killed for their testimony for Jesus Christ. That is what he meant when he said he did not come to bring peace but a sword, and to turn family members against other family members. He meant that following Jesus Christ would mean that we would even have members of our own families as our enemies. Jesus said that if anyone would come after him, he must deny himself and daily take up his cross and follow Christ. He said that if we hold on to our own fleshly lives, we will lose them for eternity, but if we lose our lives of the flesh for the sake of Christ and his gospel, then we will gain eternal life and abundant life in Christ in this life on the earth.

“His rule will extend…”

Jesus Christ is head of the church, his body, and thus he is our King, Lord and ruler. He is also the creator of the universe (see John 1) and he holds all things in his powerful hands. “All things were created by him and for him.” “He is before all things and in him all things hold together.” “God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things… by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross” (see Colossians 1:15-20). And, one day he will come again to reign and rule on the earth as King and Priest, ruler and judge. And, we will reign with him.

“I will free your prisoners…”

God was speaking to his covenant people, the Jews. He is still speaking to his covenant people, the church, because we are now under the New Covenant because of what Jesus did in dying on the cross for our sins. He made believing Jews and Gentiles one in Christ, so his people are now those who have faith in Christ as Lord and Savior. He told his people that because of his blood covenant with them (for us, through Christ), that he would free their prisoners from the waterless pit.

This could have been speaking of those exiles still in captivity, yet I see it now as our salvation through Christ’s shed blood on the cross for our sins. Yet, there is another picture here. These people were already in covenant relationship with God. And, next he said, “Return to your fortress, O prisoners of hope,” and then he promised to restore them. I believe that today, this is speaking to Christians who have strayed away from their pure devotion to Jesus Christ and who have forsaken their first love. God is calling them to return via humbling themselves and calling on God in repentance by turning from their wicked ways. Then will he heal and will restore them to a right relationship (standing) with him.

Then, the Lord will empower them from on high to defeat their enemy, which is Satan. God/Jesus Christ will be our shield of protection spiritually from our enemy, Satan. And, we will be able to defeat our foe in spiritual warfare because of the power of the working of the Holy Spirit within us.

When our lives are steeped in sin and rebellion against God, and/or when we are giving into the temptations of the flesh and/or we are allowing things to come into our minds, eyes and hearts that are displeasing to God and that affect our thinking and behavior, and/or when we become complacent about our relationship with Jesus Christ, and not only is he not in first place in our lives, but we barely even pay attention to him at all, then we have lost most of our spiritual armor with which to fight off our enemy’s attacks against us. So, if we want to be rescued from the pitfalls of sin, and we want to live victorious lives in Christ Jesus, our Lord, then we need to put off those sins that weigh us down, and we need to surrender our lives to Jesus Christ in full obedience to him.

The Lord God will save us on that day as the flock of his people. He will not save us in the sense of an unbeliever coming to faith in Christ, but he will rescue us from the pit of defeat, the pit of bondage to sin, and the pit of separation from pure fellowship with our Lord. He will then fill us once again with his peace, love, joy, strength and power to live victoriously for our Lord God. And, we will be in intimate relationship with him once again.

I know this from personal experience. I have experienced in my life what it is like to wander away from my pure devotion to the Lord, and I have also known his love and mercy in bringing me back into a right relationship with him, and the joy, peace and victory that accompanied that decision to return. God restored me, revived me, renewed me and then reinstated me to his service. There is nothing greater than being in a right relationship with God, in the center of his will, and doing what he has called us to do for his purposes and for his glory. Oh, what joy!

Full Release / An Original Work / April 15, 2012

Walking daily with my Savior brings me joy.
Loving Father; precious Jesus;
He’s my Savior and my Lord.
Gently leads me; follow Him.
I’ve invited Him within.
Now abiding in His presence, oh, what peace.
From my self-life He has brought me,
By His mercy, full release.

Hope and comfort, peace and safety Jesus brings
When I daily bow before Him;
Obey freely; do His will.
Follow Him where’er He leads.
Listen to Him; His words heed.
Now obeying his words fully, oh, what love
That He gives me through salvation,
By His Spirit, from above.

Loving Father; precious Jesus, He’s my friend.
With my Savior, by His Spirit,
I will endure to the end.
Share the gospel, tell what’s true.
Witness daily; His will do.
Tell the world of how their Savior bled and died.
On a cruel cross He suffered
So that we might be alive.

Jealous for Zion

Tuesday, April 17, 2012, 6:49 a.m. – The Lord woke me this morning with the song, “Full Release,” playing in my mind. Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening. I read Zechariah 8 (NIV 1984):

Again the word of the LORD Almighty came to me. This is what the LORD Almighty says: “I am very jealous for Zion; I am burning with jealousy for her.”

This is what the LORD says: “I will return to Zion and dwell in Jerusalem. Then Jerusalem will be called the City of Truth, and the mountain of the LORD Almighty will be called the Holy Mountain.”

... This is what the LORD Almighty says: “I will save my people from the countries of the east and the west. I will bring them back to live in Jerusalem; they will be my people, and I will be faithful and righteous to them as their God.”

This is what the LORD Almighty says: “You who now hear these words spoken by the prophets who were there when the foundation was laid for the house of the LORD Almighty, let your hands be strong so that the temple may be built. Before that time there were no wages for man or beast. No one could go about his business safely because of his enemy, for I had turned every man against his neighbor. But now I will not deal with the remnant of this people as I did in the past,” declares the LORD Almighty.

“The seed will grow well, the vine will yield its fruit, the ground will produce its crops, and the heavens will drop their dew. I will give all these things as an inheritance to the remnant of this people. As you have been an object of cursing among the nations, O Judah and Israel, so will I save you, and you will be a blessing. Do not be afraid, but let your hands be strong.”

This is what the LORD Almighty says: “Just as I had determined to bring disaster upon you and showed no pity when your fathers angered me,” says the LORD Almighty, “so now I have determined to do good again to Jerusalem and Judah. Do not be afraid. These are the things you are to do: Speak the truth to each other, and render true and sound judgment in your courts; do not plot evil against your neighbor, and do not love to swear falsely. I hate all this,” declares the LORD.

Again the word of the LORD Almighty came to me. This is what the LORD Almighty says: “The fasts of the fourth, fifth, seventh and tenth months will become joyful and glad occasions and happy festivals for Judah. Therefore love truth and peace.”

This is what the LORD Almighty says: “Many peoples and the inhabitants of many cities will yet come, and the inhabitants of one city will go to another and say, ‘Let us go at once to entreat the LORD and seek the LORD Almighty. I myself am going.’ And many peoples and powerful nations will come to Jerusalem to seek the LORD Almighty and to entreat him.”

This is what the LORD Almighty says: “In those days ten men from all languages and nations will take firm hold of one Jew by the hem of his robe and say, ‘Let us go with you, because we have heard that God is with you.’”

My Understanding: Jealousy is an interesting subject. In some instances it is sinful, and in others it is not. The type of jealousy that results in unhappiness and bitterness over another’s possessions or advantages, wishing we had what he or she has, is sinful. The type of jealousy that is possessive and obsessive of another without reason or right, and results in anger, hatred, paranoia, bondage, etc. is also sinful. Yet, there is a jealousy that is not sinful, and that is the kind that God possesses for those who are his own, and to some extent it is the kind we should also feel for our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ.

Zion is another term for God’s people. So, when God said he was jealous for Zion, he meant he was jealous for his people, now the body of Christ, the church. This kind of jealousy is that of a loving God and Father for his people, and a husband for his bride, the church. God demands exclusive loyalty and faithfulness of his people, even today. We are in a covenant relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ. When we invite Jesus Christ into our lives to be our Savior and Lord, we commit ourselves to that covenant relationship with God, which is not unlike a marriage covenant. We promise to leave our lives of sin behind us, to be transformed in heart and mind by the power and working of the Holy Spirit within us, and to put on our new lives in Christ in all Christ’s holiness and righteousness within us (see Eph. 4:17-24). And, we promise faithfulness to God as our only God; our only Lord.

When we are unfaithful to God by following after other gods or the gods of men, money, fame, entertainment, prestige, or whatever our gods may be, God is jealous for us, because he wants an exclusive relationship with us free from other gods. He does not do this because he doesn’t want us to have any fun anymore or because he is an ogre, but because our relationship to him is to like that of a husband and a wife, and we are to become one in spirit and mind with God; to love him, obey him, walk with him, fellowship with him, and serve him. He doesn’t want us to follow a path of sin, because sin hurts us, and it hurts those we love, as well as it hurts our relationship with Jesus Christ. God knows what is best for us, and he will always do what is best for us. He burns with jealousy for his bride, the church, because he wants what is best for her, and he hurts and grieves over her when she strays away from what is best, and she goes toward what is harmful. Our God is what is best for us!

And, this is the kind of jealousy we should have for one another to where we grieve over the sins of one another, and we are concerned when a false gospel is preached and when we see our brothers and sisters in Christ being led away from their pure devotion to Christ.

Paul said to the Corinthian church: “I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. I promised you to one husband, to Christ, so that I might present you as a pure virgin to him. But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ. For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough” (2 Co. 11:2-4 NIV 1984).

God (Jesus Christ) Will Return

God had left Zion when he judged his people, i.e. when Jerusalem and the temple were destroyed and when the people were taken into exile. In other words, his glory and his presence were no longer in Jerusalem or on Zion’s hill where the temple once sat. He had acted in judgment against his people because of their idolatry, spiritual adultery and because of their refusal to listen to God, and to heed his words and to obey his commands. Now he was promising to return to them and to bless them once again as a people of God and as a nation given over to God. Yet, as I read this description of how he would return to them, my thoughts went to Jesus Christ’s millennial kingdom reign on the earth.

Zion is the kingdom of God and is personified in the person of Jesus Christ. As Christ’s body, his church, we are his kingdom people and thus the church is synonymous with Zion. Jerusalem is now the heavenly Jerusalem, for physical Jerusalem is now synonymous with Hagar, the slave woman. The church is now synonymous with Sarah, the free woman, for we have been set free from sin by the power and working of the Holy Spirit of God in our lives, and we, the church, are now the children of promise.

God will once again judge the earth and the people of the earth, and I believe he will also judge his adulterous church at that time, too (see Rev 2-3). After this time of judgment is completed, Christ Jesus will return to judge and to reign on the earth and his saints with him. At that time, the saints of God through faith in Jesus Christ will be called the City of Truth, for truth will now reign supreme. She will find safety, peace and rest. Our salvation will be complete. Those who had wandered away from their pure devotion to Jesus Christ will be brought back to a right relationship with God, and their fellowship with God the Father and the Son, Jesus Christ, will be restored. I believe there will be a revival of the church when God disciplines his people and their eyes are opened to see how they had been deceived by the enemy of their souls, and when they repent of their sins and rebellion against God. And, I believe that from that will come the salvation of many lives, when God’s church gets on fire for Jesus Christ and for sharing the message of the gospel with the lost.

I don’t believe Jesus/God ever leaves those who are truly his, nor does he forsake us. Yet, I do believe that his glory and blessings can depart from our lives and from his church if we willfully choose to follow after other gods, and if we refuse to repent of our idolatry and spiritual adultery. We can’t be fruit-bearing disciples of Jesus Christ if our lives are given over to sin with no acknowledgement of the sin and with no willingness to change. Jesus Christ addressed the church on these issues via his letters to the seven churches in Asia in the book of Revelation (see chapter 2-3). God says that he disciplines those he loves, so we are to be earnest and repent.

The Things You are To Do

The foundation for the church was laid by Jesus Christ and he is the cornerstone of this spiritual building (not a physical building). As with any physical building, time, neglect, poor management, abuse, and misuse can cause the house to become decayed, filthy, in disarray, neglected, full of clutter and dust, etc. If we allow sin to creep back into our lives unchecked, or we stray away from our pure devotion to Jesus Christ, or we forsake our first love or we have the appearance of being alive, but we’re not really, or if we have become complacent about our spiritual walk, our spiritual house can be in need of repair and revitalization. In spiritual terms, this is called revival.

And, the Lord is saying to us today, I believe, that we need to be strong and not afraid and we need to be about building or rebuilding his temple, i.e. our hearts and lives and the body of Christ, the church. This begins with humbling ourselves before God in prayer, seeking his face, and turning from our wicked ways. Then will he hear our prayers and will restore us and renew us to a right relationship with him and will renew our fellowship with him to what it should be. And, God will bring the spiritual blessings into our lives he has promised to his faithful ones. And, then we will be a blessing to others, and they will want to know Jesus Christ because they see that God is truly with us.

The things we are to do are that we are to repent of any known sin in our lives and we are to return to our first love if we have been unfaithful. We are not to be afraid, but we are to do the work of rebuilding God’s temple (spiritual renewal and revival). We are to speak the truth to each other, and render true and sound judgments. We are not to plot evil against our neighbors, and we are instructed to not love to swear falsely (not take pleasure in lies or in telling lies), and we are to love truth and peace (the kind Jesus gives, i.e. true peace with God). Then our service of sacrifice to the Lord will become joyful, not ritualistic, because it will mean something to us personally as evidenced in our changed lives.

Was it really for Me?

Sunday, April 15, 2012, 5:30 a.m. – The Lord woke me this morning with the song, “Not By Might,” playing in my mind. Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening. I read Zechariah 7 (NASB):

In the fourth year of King Darius, the word of the LORD came to Zechariah on the fourth day of the ninth month, which is Chislev. Now the town of Bethel had sent Sharezer and Regemmelech and their men to seek the favor of the LORD, speaking to the priests who belong to the house of the LORD of hosts, and to the prophets, saying, “Shall I weep in the fifth month and abstain, as I have done these many years?” Then the word of the LORD of hosts came to me, saying, “Say to all the people of the land and to the priests, ‘When you fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh months these seventy years, was it actually for Me that you fasted? When you eat and drink, do you not eat for yourselves and do you not drink for yourselves? Are not these the words which the LORD proclaimed by the former prophets, when Jerusalem was inhabited and prosperous along with its cities around it, and the Negev and the foothills were inhabited?’”

Then the word of the LORD came to Zechariah saying, “Thus has the LORD of hosts said, ‘Dispense true justice and practice kindness and compassion each to his brother; and do not oppress the widow or the orphan, the stranger or the poor; and do not devise evil in your hearts against one another.’ But they refused to pay attention and turned a stubborn shoulder and stopped their ears from hearing. They made their hearts like flint so that they could not hear the law and the words which the LORD of hosts had sent by His Spirit through the former prophets; therefore great wrath came from the LORD of hosts. And just as He called and they would not listen, so they called and I would not listen,” says the LORD of hosts; “but I scattered them with a storm wind among all the nations whom they have not known. Thus the land is desolated behind them so that no one went back and forth, for they made the pleasant land desolate.”

My Understanding: The people of God had been in exile for seventy years as a judgment of God upon them for their rebellion against Almighty God, for their idolatry and spiritual adultery, and for their refusal to repent and to turn from their wicked ways, even though God had sent them messages through his servants the prophets, and had warned them of impending judgment if they did not repent. The time of their exile was now complete, and those who had come out of the exile from Babylon were now inquiring of the priests (of the Lord through the priests) as to whether or not they needed to continue the practice of fasting that had been initiated by the Jews in exile in commemoration of the destruction of Jerusalem and of the temple. Now that the rebuilding of the temple of God was nearing completion, the people questioned whether or not the practice of fasting over the destruction of the temple was still relevant and necessary.

The Lord’s response to this inquiry, nonetheless, was to cast doubt on the sincerity of the ritual fasting that had taken place. He questioned whether or not the fasting was truly for him. The purpose of fasting is not to be ritualistic and by rote, but it is so we can devote ourselves to prayer and contrition, and so we can intercede in prayer for ourselves, for others, for our nation, our leaders, for life’s situations, for the world as a whole, for revival of the church, for the salvation of souls, and for the healing of the wounded, etc. Yet, it appears by God’s rebuke of them, and their ritual, that he was saying to them that they had turned that time, instead, into a mere ritual devoid of its divinely intended purpose, which was for intercessory prayer and repentance. Instead of the fasting resulting in true repentance and obedience to God and to his commands, it merely became a religious form.

So, the Lord let them know what he truly desired. He desired mercy, not sacrifice. He was not the least bit interested in their (or our) forms of worship, rituals, religious practices, etc. God does not want what we decide to give up or do for him if it does not include us giving him our hearts and lives. He wants us as living sacrifices on his altar, holy and pleasing to him, no longer conformed to the shape of the world, but transformed by the Spirit of God in the renewing of our minds (see Rom. 12:1-2). He has always desired this of his people, and the Old and New Testaments teach the same message. He wants us to dispense true justice (righteousness; honesty; integrity; fair dealings) with others, treating them with love, kindness, fairness and truthfulness. He desires that we not oppress - persecute; or inflict pain upon - those less fortunate, or those weaker than us. He wants no bullies.

And, he requires, as well, that we not plot or devise evil in our hearts towards others, or participate in such evil by approving of it in any way, shape or form. That means we should not hate, be vindictive or seek revenge toward others, or plan wicked schemes intended to harm others, or be in agreement with others doing such, or allowing ourselves to be entertained by such behavior as this. It appears the people who had come out of the exile were guilty of such sins, for God to specifically mention those sins. God was calling them to genuine repentance and obedience, and away from mere ritualistic and formal religion absent of true heart transformation. See this parallel passage in Isaiah 58:

“Yet on the day of your fasting, you do as you please
and exploit all your workers.
Your fasting ends in quarreling and strife,
and in striking each other with wicked fists.
You cannot fast as you do today
and expect your voice to be heard on high.
Is this the kind of fast I have chosen,
only a day for a man to humble himself?
Is it only for bowing one’s head like a reed
and for lying on sackcloth and ashes?
Is that what you call a fast,
a day acceptable to the LORD?

“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen:
to loose the chains of injustice
and untie the cords of the yoke,
to set the oppressed free
and break every yoke?
Is it not to share your food with the hungry
and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—
when you see the naked, to clothe him,
and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?
Then your light will break forth like the dawn,
and your healing will quickly appear;
then your righteousness will go before you,
and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard.
Then you will call, and the LORD will answer;
you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I” (Isaiah 58:3b-9 NIV 1984).

The Lord was speaking to the people in this word from Zechariah (chapter 7) about their ancestors whom the Lord had judged and had sent into exile because of these sins listed here, and because of their refusal to listen to the Lord and to repent, and he was also speaking to those who had come out of the exile, telling them not to be like their forefathers, which apparently some of them were following in their fathers’ footsteps, or there was a danger of such. He was warning them against refusal to listen to the Lord like their forefathers had done. They had refused to pay attention to God, to his prophets and to God’s words and warnings to them. They stubbornly stopped up their ears, because they didn’t like the message, and they made their hearts as hard as flint. So, the Lord was angry with them. He stopped listening to them, and he scattered them with a whirlwind to get their attention and to bring them to repentance and back into a right relationship with God. God was telling this to the exiles who had come out of Babylon as a warning to not repeat their forefathers’ behavior and thus incur God’s wrath as a result.

Yet, the people of God did not lack knowledge of what was right and wrong. They had God’s words through the prophets and they had the history of the Jewish nation and the people who had gone before them as examples of what to do or not to do. They were not ignorant of God’s laws. They were just disobedient. If we don’t obey God, and if we don’t apply his words in reality to our everyday lives, then all of our religious practices are just forms and rituals, because they lack true heart transformation and commitment to Jesus Christ.

We can go through all the forms, sing the songs, lift our hands in the air, and appear to be in love with Jesus. Yet, his word teaches us that love for God is to obey his commands (see 1 John), to love others, and to turn from our sins and to turn to walk in faithful obedience to Jesus Christ, to go wherever he leads us, and to do whatever he requires of us to do, not in our own strength and power, but by the Spirit of God working in and through us for his purposes and for his glory.

When we turn our hearts over to the Lord in making him our Savior and Lord, we enter into a covenant relationship with God not unlike a marriage covenant. We promise to honor, love and obey him, to submit to his purposes and will for our lives, and to turn from our former “single” lives of sin, and to be committed and faithful to him as our only husband and master (see Ephesians 4:17-24).

This is what it means to come to Jesus Christ. It just isn’t taught that much anymore. Some people have changed the gospel into a license for immorality when they teach that repentance and obedience to Christ and his commands are not required for salvation. That is a false teaching, because the New Testament definitely teaches repentance and obedience for true salvation to take place. The false teachers use the excuse that calling for repentance and obedience is legalism and that it negates God’s grace, but that is a false assumption. In actuality, the grace of God is what gives us the ability to repent and to obey, and these are gifts from God, as appropriated to our lives via our willingness to submit to and to surrender to the working of the Holy Spirit of God within us. For, we cannot do this in our own strength or willpower, but it is the Spirit of God working in and through us that makes repentance and obedience possible, as we cooperate with that work.

Not By Might / An Original Work / March 29, 2012

Based off Zechariah 4

“Not by might, and not by power,
But by My Spirit,” says our Lord, God.
“Mighty mountain, O what are you?
Before Christ you will become level ground.”
The hands of our Lord, Savior God,
Formed the foundation of His church.
He alone will complete the work
He began in His servants’ hearts and minds.

Who despises small beginnings?
Much can be done in Christ’s strength within.
Be of courage, and trust your Lord.
All sufficient He is for all your needs.
Opposition and apathy:
Holy Spirit will set us free!
We can be overcomers in our faith
In our Lord, and our Savior, King.

Don’t be troubled by God’s timing.
He has ev’rything in His command.
Hasten to obey His commands fully,
Trusting Him to work all for good.
Not by might nor by human strength,
But by God’s power; strength within;
My dependency now on His working
His will in me in righteousness.

Yesterday morning, the pastor of the church fellowship we now attend preached a sermon on the subject of moving from our initial commitment to Jesus Christ, in inviting him into our hearts and lives to be our Savior and Lord, to becoming fully committed followers of Jesus Christ, being willing to die for our testimony for Jesus Christ, and for the truth of the gospel. Though I did not see the connection between this song and the sermon when the Lord gave me the lyrics yesterday afternoon, the more I have read or sung through them, the more I have seen the connection. Many people come to faith in Jesus Christ, but don’t understand what it means to be fully devoted to Christ, until someone explains to them the cost, the joy, and the blessings of walking daily in fellowship and obedience to Jesus Christ.

This Will Happen

Saturday, April 14, 2012, 6:06 a.m. – The Lord woke me this morning with the song, “The Lord’s Anointed,” playing through my mind. Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening. I read Zechariah 6 (NIV 1984):

Four Chariots

I looked up again—and there before me were four chariots coming out from between two mountains—mountains of bronze! The first chariot had red horses, the second black, the third white, and the fourth dappled—all of them powerful. I asked the angel who was speaking to me, “What are these, my lord?”

The angel answered me, “These are the four spirits of heaven, going out from standing in the presence of the Lord of the whole world. The one with the black horses is going toward the north country, the one with the white horses toward the west, and the one with the dappled horses toward the south.”

When the powerful horses went out, they were straining to go throughout the earth. And he said, “Go throughout the earth!” So they went throughout the earth.

Then he called to me, “Look, those going toward the north country have given my Spirit rest in the land of the north.”

A Crown for Joshua

The word of the LORD came to me: “Take silver and gold from the exiles Heldai, Tobijah and Jedaiah, who have arrived from Babylon. Go the same day to the house of Josiah son of Zephaniah. Take the silver and gold and make a crown, and set it on the head of the high priest, Joshua son of Jehozadak. Tell him this is what the LORD Almighty says: ‘Here is the man whose name is the Branch, and he will branch out from his place and build the temple of the LORD. It is he who will build the temple of the LORD, and he will be clothed with majesty and will sit and rule on his throne. And he will be a priest on his throne. And there will be harmony between the two.’ The crown will be given to Heldai, Tobijah, Jedaiah and Hen son of Zephaniah as a memorial in the temple of the LORD. Those who are far away will come and help to build the temple of the LORD, and you will know that the LORD Almighty has sent me to you. This will happen if you diligently obey the LORD your God.”

My Understanding: In Daniel seven we learn about four kingdoms that will rise on the earth. The fourth and final kingdom of men, before Jesus Christ sets up his kingdom on the earth, will be one with iron teeth and bronze claws. This beast will crush and devour its victims and trample underfoot whatever is left. This kingdom will devour the whole earth. A king will arise out of this kingdom who will oppress the saints of God. The saints will be handed over to him for a time, times and half a time. This is speaking of the beast of Revelation which will rule the entire world and will persecute, imprison and kill the saints of God for their testimony for Jesus Christ. Yet, after this period of time, the court will sit, and the power of this final earthly king will be taken away and he will be destroyed forever. And, then Jesus Christ will rule and reign on the earth, and his saints will reign and rule with him.

The Two Mountains

In this passage in Zechariah 6, four chariots with horses came out from between two mountains of bronze. I recalled this fourth beast, which was partly made of iron, bronze and clay. Bronze is made of copper and tin. This final earthly kingdom is pictured as a beast (so also in Revelation). This beast has iron teeth and bronze claws. Bronze is a very hard yellowish brown metal. The third beast in Daniel was made of bronze, so it appears this fourth beast contains some of the third beast (kingdom). Claws are sharp nails of an animal. They are used for tearing their prey to pieces. If this is to be taken literally, this would be accomplished through the use of weapons of warfare and through military force, though there are other ways in which to tear enemies to pieces (economically, politically, etc.).

A mountain can mean many things. This could be speaking of two literal mountains, but I don’t think so. In Zechariah 4 it spoke of a mighty mountain that would become level ground when Zerubbabel, a prefiguring of Jesus Christ, completed the temple. Thus, the mountain appears to be representing some type of obstacle(s) that stood in the way of the rebuilding of the temple. This mighty mountain in chapter four can thus symbolize anything that exalts itself above God, such as strongholds of Satan, Satan himself, sin, selfishness, pride, envy, etc., and that stands as a resistant power to the mighty working of God. In chapter six, these two mountains are made of bronze, so they are strong and fortified. Christ Jesus is the one to complete the temple, his church, and that won’t happen until he returns for his bride, at which time he will judge the Dragon (Satan), the beast and the false prophet. The beast and the false prophet could very well, then, be these two mountains.

I looked up the symbolism of the number two. It has to do with contrast, a difference between one thing and another and/or division of some kind. The chariots came out from between the two mountains of bronze. “Between” can also mean “among,” or “flanked by.” So, the chariots and horses could be said to have come out from among two opposing forces and that there is some kind of natural division or contrast between the two of them. What comes to my mind is the institutional church and the government, like the woman who rides the beast, perhaps, or the beast (a global government) and the false prophet (the institutional church). The church and government are different from each other and there should be a natural division between the two, yet in the context of the institutional church, the church is in a contractual (marriage) relationship with the government. Both the government of the USA and the institutional church of the USA are strong forces (mountains) that stand as resistant powers against Christ’s true church, the body of Christ.

Also, going back to the fourth kingdom in Daniel, when I think of the third kingdom as being made of bronze and the fourth having bronze claws (military power), I can’t help but think of the USA as this third kingdom and the fourth kingdom being this New World Order which has NATO as its global military force, of which the US military comprises roughly 90%, which would make the US military, perhaps, the bronze claws of this fourth beast.

I believe the strongest opposition to the church globally, but in particular in America, is deception. That is Satan’s strongest weapon against the church. So, when we think of enemy forces coming against Israel and that God will judge those he used as divine instruments against her, this is speaking today of the church, not physical Israel. There is much deception within the church via man-made teachings, marketing techniques, man’s plans and goals for “building” Christ’s church, etc. And, there is much deception in the government via the news media, TV, movies, radio talk shows, etc., much of which is government controlled to tell us what they want us to believe, but the truth that is told is so mixed with lies and so twisted that we can’t trust it. We can’t even trust our church leaders to tell us the truth, because so many of them are teaching a false and watered-down gospel of men, instead of the true gospel of Jesus Christ, i.e. the true message of the cross. So, our true enemies are within our own gates and among our own people, and we are being destroyed from within.

So, God is going to judge the nations that have come against God’s people in deceiving the followers of Christ with so many lies that lead them away from pure devotion to Jesus Christ. And, I believe he is going to use parts of those nations, which have joined forces with the New World Order, to turn on their own people in warfare, too. I can’t help but see this dappled horse(s) as representing a blend of religions and government into one global order of government and religion. When the beast rules and God turns his saints over to him, that will mean deliverance for his saints, in reality, for truly their greatest opposition to the building of Christ’s church is deception, and when the church is judged and persecuted and killed for their faith in Christ, then eyes will be opened and they will be delivered out of the hands of their deceivers, even through death, for they will be free through acceptance and acknowledgment of the truth. God will have to judge his church in order to bring her back into a right relationship with him.

A Crown

The crown for Joshua is symbolic of Jesus Christ’s kingdom reign as both priest and king. The song, “The Lord’s Anointed,” is based off Isaiah 61, which is another prophecy about Jesus Christ, part of which he quoted about himself. Joshua was called the branch, and the branch is another name for Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ will branch out, because we are the body of Christ, and we come from him, and through us and our witness for him he branches out into the entire world. So, this prophecy in Isaiah 61 also applies to us, because we are his servants, the Lord’s anointed, his messengers, and his representatives. His ministry continues through us, if we are willing and obedient. Christ is ultimately the one who builds his church and he is the one who will complete his church, but we work with him in the building of the church (not physical buildings, but people’s lives) through sharing the gospel, through sharing with people that they need to turn from their sins and turn to faith in Jesus Christ, through edifying the church by serving as the parts of the body God intended for us and by using the spiritual gifts he has placed within us for the edification of his church, which is what this song is about. Many will come to Christ and will join in building Christ’s church. “This will happen if you diligently obey the LORD your God.”

Jesus Christ will complete this temple, his body, the church, when he returns for his bride. This is when our salvation will be completely realized. At this time he will set up his kingdom reign and rule on the earth for a period of a thousand years, and we will reign and rule with him. In the meanwhile, we need to be about the work of rebuilding Christ’s church, by being Christ’s hands and feet in taking the gospel of Jesus Christ to the world and by demonstrating the love of Jesus Christ to all he brings into our lives. And, we need to pray for revival of our nation and of the church in our nation, because so many are deceived and are believing the lies of the enemy. We need to proclaim freedom to the captives…

The Lord’s Anointed / An Original Work / December 16, 2011

Based off Isaiah 61

The Spirit of the Sov’reign Lord on me;
Anointed to preach the Good News;
Sent me to bind up the brokenhearted;
Proclaim freedom for the captives.
He sent me to preach release for pris’ners
Who are walking in sin’s darkness;
Proclaim God’s grace to all men who’ll listen;
And tell them about God’s judgments;
Comfort all who mourn;
Give crowns of beauty;
Oil of gladness and thanksgiving.

They will be called oaks of God’s righteousness,
A planting of our Savior, God,
For the display of our Lord’s splendor, and
They will rebuild God’s holy church.
God will renew them, and will restore them,
And you’ll be called priests of the Lord.
You will be ministers of our God, and
You will rejoice in salvation.
The Lord loves justice;
He is faithful to
Reward those who are seeking Him.

I delight greatly in the Lord;
My soul rejoices in my Savior, God.
He has clothed me with His salvation,
And in a robe of His righteousness.
He has given me priestly garments to
Wear, as the bride of Jesus Christ.
As the garden of our Lord and Savior,
He causes us to grow in Him.
He makes righteousness,
Praise, and thanksgiving
Spring up before all the nations.

Small Things

Thursday, April 12, 2012, 6:37 a.m. – The Lord woke me this morning with the song, “No Less,” playing in my mind. Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening. I read Zechariah 4 (NIV 1984):

The Gold Lampstand and the Two Olive Trees

1 Then the angel who talked with me returned and wakened me, as a man is wakened from his sleep. 2 He asked me, “What do you see?”

I answered, “I see a solid gold lampstand with a bowl at the top and seven lights on it, with seven channels to the lights. 3 Also there are two olive trees by it, one on the right of the bowl and the other on its left.”

4 I asked the angel who talked with me, “What are these, my lord?”

5 He answered, “Do you not know what these are?”

“No, my lord,” I replied.

6 So he said to me, “This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the LORD Almighty.

7 “What are you, O mighty mountain? Before Zerubbabel you will become level ground. Then he will bring out the capstone to shouts of ‘God bless it! God bless it!’”

8 Then the word of the LORD came to me: 9 “The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this temple; his hands will also complete it. Then you will know that the LORD Almighty has sent me to you.

10 “Who despises the day of small things? Men will rejoice when they see the plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel.

“(These seven are the eyes of the LORD, which range throughout the earth.)”

11 Then I asked the angel, “What are these two olive trees on the right and the left of the lampstand?”

12 Again I asked him, “What are these two olive branches beside the two gold pipes that pour out golden oil?”

13 He replied, “Do you not know what these are?”

“No, my lord,” I said.

14 So he said, “These are the two who are anointed to serve the Lord of all the earth.”

My Understanding: The book of Zechariah is a prophecy about Jesus Christ, and about what Jesus Christ did in dying on the cross for our sins so we could be free from the control of sin over our lives, and free from eternal damnation. In chapter three we learned about his plan of salvation for us in removing our sins and in giving us new life in Jesus Christ, our Lord. In chapter four we learn about the power and the working of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer, as well as we learn more of what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ.

The Building Project

Much of the book of Zechariah centers around the rebuilding of the temple, the same as did the book of Haggai. The foundation for the temple had been laid, but the people of God allowed persecution, rejection and opposition to discourage them. They got caught up in taking care of their own houses, and they allowed the building project to come to a halt.

That happens with the church, too. Jesus Christ laid the foundation for this spiritual building, and he is our capstone or cornerstone. He is also the one who will complete the work of the building of his church. The apostles and prophets also laid a spiritual foundation for the church, God’s people. Yet, Satan is out to destroy God’s people, the church, and so he throws opposition at us, or else he tempts us to be distracted by our own stuff. Haggai talked about this when he spoke with the people of God about how they were saying it was not time to rebuild God’s house. Yet, they were busy building their own houses, while they neglected God’s house.

Since the temple is now within the hearts of Christ’s followers, and since the temple is also collectively those in whom the Spirit of God dwells, the rebuilding of God’s temple that is necessary today is not on a physical level, but is on a spiritual level. The people of God (many of them) have allowed the distractions and pleasures of this world, the lies and deceptions of Satan (false teaching, for instance) and/or the opposition of the enemy, through the rejection of man, mockery, persecution, etc. to halt the “building project,” i.e. to halt spiritual progress within the body of Christ, his temple. Some have become complacent and apathetic. Others have forsaken their first love. Still others have tolerated sinful behavior in their own lives or in the life of the church, without correction. And, so God is calling out to his servants to rebuild the temple, i.e. this is a call for revival and renewal.

Resources and Power

Yet, the good news here is that we don’t have to do this in our own strength, or with human resources. This is a spiritual work, not a physical one, and it is completely and totally dependent upon the Spirit of God to do the work through us, as we cooperate with that work.

There are several symbols given to us in this passage of scripture that describe this power and working of the Spirit of God in and through us. When asked by Zechariah what these were, the Lord replied by letting him know that it is not by our might or power that we can rebuild God’s temple, i.e. true revival will take place, but it is by the Spirit of God, not by anything we do in our own human flesh or willpower. The symbols appear to demonstrate for us the abundant supply of this Holy Spirit power in order to do the work, i.e. it is unending. We will never run out. God just keeps giving and giving.

Then, the Lord spoke of a mighty mountain that needed to be brought down to level ground. The mountain represents anything that stands in the way as an obstacle to this rebuilding of God’s temple, i.e. any hindrances to spiritual renewal and revival in the hearts of followers of Christ. For some of us, the mountain may be our own selfishness, sin, pride, apathy, laziness, and/or preoccupation with self and our own desires. For others of us, the mountain may come from external sources such as family members, the church itself, the world, or whatever other external sources and influences might be standing in opposition to this rebuilding of God’s temple, his body, the church.

Zerubbabel and Joshua represent the priestly and royal offices of Jesus Christ as both King and High Priest, so truly it is before Christ Jesus that these mountains in our lives will be brought down, so that the work of revival and renewal in our hearts and lives can take place. And, God will see to it in his perfect timing.

Small Things

Solomon’s temple was glorious. This temple was not so glorious, as it was being built by poor exiles, so in man’s eyes, it was small and insignificant. Perhaps one of the reasons the project came to a halt is because the people themselves began to believe Satan’s lies and felt as though, if they could not rebuild “Solomon’s” temple, it was not worth rebuilding. I believe those same kinds of lies affect today’s church and often stand as hindrances to true spiritual growth and maturity in the life of the church via the Holy Spirit’s power, not ours. So many pastors and church congregations have bought into man’s philosophies for how to “build” Christ’s church using man’s methods, which are worldly methods, in order to attract the world to the church, and they have neglected the Holy Spirit’s power.

In following man’s means for “building” God’s temple, the church, the church has sacrificed the power of the Spirit of God in favor of doing what looks good to men. Many have placed their main focus on the “worship” service and the stage performance, and have taught and believed that idea that we are to give God our “best” outwardly (appearance) to be pleasing to him and to accomplish “his” purposes. But, that is not the way God works. His best is having our hearts, and in having our hearts, it also means we have submitted to his Lordship, and if we have submitted to his Lordship, then he is in control. Then we allow the Spirit to do the work through us HIS way, not ours. God can take the seemingly insignificant (in man’s estimation) and can work wonders, because it is his work, his way, using his methods. And, then we can rejoice in knowing that Jesus Christ is the one building HIS church, not men building earthly kingdoms which they call “church.”

Perhaps you are one of those “insignificant” ones the church of today has passed by or has overlooked because you didn’t measure up to man’s standards of what they think is “God’s best” that they must put forward in order to attract the world to the worldly church (social club; organization; business). Don’t be disheartened! God has overcome the world! And, he can move mighty mountains on our behalf, too!! We just have to rest in the Lord and know that it is not in our own strength or power that his work will be accomplished in and through our lives, but it is by his Spirit that God will do what he has planned for us, no matter what man does, and no matter what obstacles man puts in our way. God is stronger! There is not a mountain he cannot move. We just have to keep serving, loving and obeying him, trusting him to accomplish his will and purposes for our lives, despite the mountains that come our way, and despite how seemingly insignificant we might feel we are in the scheme of things.

No Less / An Original Work / March 19, 2012

I can do no less than praise You,
Lord, for all You’ve done for me.
You died for my sins to save me,
So I would be set free.
I adore You! Lord, I praise You!
Jesus, Savior, King of kings!
You provided my redemption.
Your grace has pardoned me.

I can do no less than serve You.
Lord, Your witness I would be,
Telling others of Your love,
And why You died on that tree.
Tell of how You gave of Your life,
So from sin we’d be set free,
So we could worship You forever,
And live eternally.

I can do no less than love You,
Lord, for You have first loved me.
You gave of Your life so willing,
Because You cared for me.
Turn from my sin! Obey freely!
Live for You each passing day.
Read Your word, and follow Your lead,
Lord, as I humbly pray.
