Habakkuk 2

Then the Lord replied: "Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets so that a herald may run with it. For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false. Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay."

Your New Life

Before Jesus left this earth to go back to heaven to be with the Father he left a command for all of his disciples to follow (see Matt. 28:18-20). We are go! We are to make disciples (followers of Christ) of all nations. We are to baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son (Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit. And, we are to teach them to obey all things Jesus Christ has commanded us in his word. And, he is with us always.

He also told them that when the Holy Spirit came upon them that they were to be his witnesses throughout the world (See Ac. 1:8). When we receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior of our lives, we receive his Holy Spirit within us, and we are to be Christ’s witnesses everywhere he sends us.

Not unlike Paul, he is sending us to open the eyes of the blind and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God so that they can receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are being sanctified and made holy in Christ Jesus, our Lord. We are to proclaim freedom for those captive to sin, and the light of the gospel to all who are spiritually blind. We are ministers of our God.

Your New Life / An Original Work
Based off the Gospels / May 15, 2014

Go and make disciples of peoples,
Teaching them to obey their Savior.
Do not fear, but go where He sends you.
Tell them all of what you have heard.

The kingdom of God now is upon you.
Come, and follow Jesus, your Lord.
He will make you fishers of man.

If the people Jesus desire,
They must die to sin and to self-life.
If they want to hold on to their lives
They will lose them forevermore.

Surely you heard that coming to Christ
Means a new life in Jesus, your Lord.
Follow Christ wherever He leads.

Love the Lord with all of your heart, and
Love your neighbors as you would yourself.
Preach the gospel to all the nations.
Do not worry what you will say.

Proclaim the freedom for all the captives.
Share the light with all who are blind.
You are ministers of our God.

Deep On My Heart

Tuesday, May 13, 2014, 8:03 a.m. – the Lord Jesus put the song in mind “Oh, To Be Like Thee.” Speak, Lord, your words to my heart. I read 1 Thessalonians 4:1-12 (NIV).

The Instructions

As for other matters, brothers and sisters, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more. For you know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus.

Although what I am about to share with you does not technically qualify as instructions, I believe the apostles, and/or the believers in Thessalonica, set the example for us, as noted in the two previous chapters (chaps. 2-3), as to how we should live in order to please God.

They dared to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with the people in spite of strong opposition, i.e. they were faithful in service to the Lord despite resistance, conflict, or even hostility coming against them. Their appeal (petition) to the people of God, possibly with regard to this subject of being instructed in how to live to please God, did not come from error or impure motives or through the means of trickery. They were honest, forthright and loving in their dealings with the church. They did not alter their speech or the gospel presentation in order to make it pleasing to humans, and they didn’t use flattery (insincere compliments), cover-ups (schemes) or facades (false fronts or fake appearances) in order to deceive. They did not look for praise from humans, but they lived to please God.

They also were devoted to the body of believers, treating them as a loving parent would treat his or her own children, gently caring for them, loving them, giving of their own lives to them, supporting themselves so as not to financially burden the young believers, and living holy lives before them as an example to them. They were also dedicated to encouraging (exhorting; admonishing), comforting (showing sympathy) and urging the believers to live lives worthy of God, who calls us “into his kingdom and glory.”

They thanked God for the believers and for their faith in the Lord, their faithfulness in service, their labor prompted by love, and their endurance inspired by hope in Jesus Christ. They thanked God for how the followers had become imitators of the Lord and of his servants, even though they faced severe suffering for their faith and practice. As well, they thanked God that the believers there had turned from their idols to serve the living and true God. And they thanked the Lord that the disciples there had accepted the preaching of the gospel, not as the words of humans, but as the words of God. They were encouraged, too, by the believers’ faith, because the followers were standing firm (steadfast and assured) in the Lord. Amen! They were also faithful in prayer for the followers, and they set as their goal to supply what was still lacking in the believers’ faith, i.e. this was ongoing.

Be Sanctified

It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control your own body in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate lust like the pagans, who do not know God; and that in this matter no one should wrong or take advantage of a brother or sister. The Lord will punish all those who commit such sins, as we told you and warned you before. For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. Therefore, anyone who rejects this instruction does not reject a human being but God, the very God who gives you his Holy Spirit.

It is God’s will that we should all be sanctified, i.e. that we should be made holy, set apart from the world and set apart to/for God, being transformed by the Lord Jesus into His likeness. Although this is the working of the Holy Spirit in our lives, and we cannot do this in our own flesh, that does not mean we do not have a role (part) in this process. We do!

We must willingly and willfully choose to and make it a practice of our lives to keep away (separating ourselves) from all types and means of sexual immorality in order that we may be set apart to God and to his service. We must choose to be different (unlike) the world so that we can become like Christ. In other words, we can’t hold on to the world of sin and its sinful practices and philosophies if we want to be holy (set apart) unto the Lord. We can’t spend our evenings viewing and listening to what is unholy and ungodly and then try to live lives pleasing to God. The two are in direct opposition to each other.

We have to cooperate fully with God’s work of grace in our lives by refusing to allow anything immoral to even enter into our minds, because sin begins in the mind. We have to examine all that we take into our minds and hearts against scripture to make sure we are not entertaining immorality in our minds, and so that it does not then move from our minds and hearts to our actions. When we entertain lustful (sinful) thoughts, even just in our minds, we are wronging and are guilty of taking advantage of others, especially our spouses to whom we have vowed our faithfulness, love and commitment until death us do part.

Love Others

Now about your love for one another we do not need to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love each other. And in fact, you do love all of God’s family throughout Macedonia. Yet we urge you, brothers and sisters, to do so more and more, and to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business and work with your hands, just as we told you, so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.

Instead, we are to practice loving thoughts, attitudes and actions towards others. The two previous chapters, as noted above, give us many good examples of how that love is to be lived out in practice, so I will not repeat those again. They speak volumes to my heart. I hope they do to you, as well! Yet, I will say here that “love” cannot be defined by this world of sin, for their definition of “love” is distorted by sin, so we should always look to God’s word to see how genuine love was lived out in practice by Christ and by his servants.

Love is not a feeling or an emotion. It is action, i.e. we love even despite how we may feel at the moment, i.e. in our flesh we don’t always feel like responding in love, do we? I know I am not perfect in this area, but God is changing me all the time, for which I am so thankful. I still have a lot to learn about love, I am sure, and I am willing to learn, because my goal is to be loving in all I do and say. Yet, as noted above, loving words are not always what is pleasing to humans, but they treat others like a loving parent would treat his or her child, which means sometimes it requires us to speak the truth in love, even when it hurts.

Part of loving others involves not being a busybody (meddler; gossip), especially to not interfere in matters that don’t involve us in some way. Our brothers’ and sisters’ walks with the Lord do concern us, though, so we are to be busy about encouraging, comforting and urging one another to live holy lives pleasing to God so that we are not led astray, and so we don’t fall into temptation. Busybodies are often those who stir up trouble for others while they themselves do not have their own affairs in order. Oftentimes they are guilty of taking advantage of others and of not taking personal responsibility for their own affairs. We should guard ourselves against such pitfalls as this. In all things, we should emulate Christ.

Oh, to Be Like Thee, Blessed Redeemer
Thomas O. Chisholm / W. J. Kirkpatrick

Oh, to be like Thee! blessèd Redeemer,
This is my constant longing and prayer;
Gladly I’ll forfeit all of earth’s treasures,
Jesus, Thy perfect likeness to wear.

Oh, to be like Thee! full of compassion,
Loving, forgiving, tender and kind,
Helping the helpless, cheering the fainting,
Seeking the wandering sinner to find.

O to be like Thee! lowly in spirit,
Holy and harmless, patient and brave;
Meekly enduring cruel reproaches,
Willing to suffer others to save.

O to be like Thee! while I am pleading,
Pour out Thy Spirit, fill with Thy love;
Make me a temple meet for Thy dwelling,
Fit me for life and Heaven above.

Oh, to be like Thee! Oh, to be like Thee,
Blessèd Redeemer, pure as Thou art;
Come in Thy sweetness, come in Thy fullness;
Stamp Thine own image deep on my heart.

"Amber Alert"

Saturday, May 10, 2014, 4:23 a.m. – Last night, sometime after I had fallen asleep, my phone sounded an Amber Alert. I turned the alert off and went back to sleep. Then, around 12:30 a.m., I think it was, the alert sounded again, waking me a second time. Just then the Lord Jesus put the song in mind, “Only In Him.” Again, when I woke this morning this song was playing in my mind. Speak, Lord, your words to my heart. I read Colossians 2 (NIV).

Alert System

I want you to know how much I am struggling for you and for those at Laodicea, and for all who have not met me personally. 2 My purpose is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, 3 in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. 4 I tell you this so that no one may deceive you by fine-sounding arguments. 5 For though I am absent from you in body, I am present with you in spirit and delight to see how orderly you are and how firm your faith in Christ is.

An Amber Alert is a child abduction alert system. “The alerts are broadcast using the Emergency Alert System, which had previously been used primarily for weather bulletins, civil emergencies, or national emergencies. Alerts usually contain a description of the child and of the likely abductor… Law enforcement must confirm that an abduction has taken place. The child must be at risk of serious injury or death. There must be sufficient descriptive information of child, captor, or captor’s vehicle to issue an alert” (Wikipedia).

I believe the Lord Jesus gave me this illustration this morning of this child abduction alert system in relation to Paul’s concerns here for the church. The “child,” in this case, is the church here in America, though it could apply to the church in other countries, as well. The child, for the most part, has been abducted by the world’s system (the captor), comprised of the US government and the Institutional Church (the vehicle), which is inculcated into today’s culture. I do believe this is a national emergency.

Hollow & Deceptive Philosophy

6 So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, 7 rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.
8 See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ.
9 For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, 10 and you have been given fullness in Christ, who is the head over every power and authority. 11 In him you were also circumcised, in the putting off of the sinful nature, not with a circumcision done by the hands of men but with the circumcision done by Christ, 12 having been buried with him in baptism and raised with him through your faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead.
13 When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, 14 having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross. 15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross…

The situation presented to us in this passage of scripture was that of Judaizers trying to convince Gentile Christians that they must be circumcised and follow some Jewish laws and customs in addition to their faith in order to be saved, I believe. The situation in America, though legalism still exists and is still a problem, is primarily on the opposite end of the spectrum of faith based on “human commands and teachings.” One end requires externals added to faith in order to have salvation. The other dilutes the Biblical meaning of God’s grace and misuses, manipulates, and often ignores scripture in favor of the teachings of humans. Both ends of human-based faith divert from the teachings of God’s word in favor of humanistic philosophies. I believe the Lord is saying that this is presently at a level of a national emergency here in America, thus the need for the church to be alerted.

The “captors,” in order to captivate their “abductees” use “fine-sounding arguments” to support their “hollow and deceptive” philosophies. So, how do we know when we are being taken captive? We have to examine what we are being taught against the word of truth and not just buy into everything we hear, because it will be disguised as truth, and it will sound like truth, but that does not mean it really is truth. If what we are being taught comes primarily from books written by humans - which might contain scripture - instead of coming straight from God’s word, watch out! Many are masters at making their materials appear scriptural because they contain scripture, while they spread their own humanistic philosophies instead. We need to pray much for discernment of the Spirit so that we are not taken captive to man-made religion and miss what God has for us. The most serious danger, I believe, is that many will be assured they are saved when they are not because they bought into a man-made gospel instead of the one taught in scripture.

United in Love

“Unity” is a buzzword in today’s world of business, institutional church and world government, yet much of this unity is either forced or manipulated compliance, as well as the unity is with humans and their humanistic philosophy, visions, goals, etc. rather than true unity with Christ and his word. So, be watchful to make sure with whom or what you are unifying.

We need to have the full riches of complete understanding to know the mystery of Christ. We who have free access to God’s word can find this understanding in the word of truth. I believe Christians in America need to spend a whole lot less time reading books written by humans, and we all need to be in God’s word daily hearing from him so that we know what he says rather than learning and following what so-and-so says.

What the word of God teaches us, regarding our salvation, is that in Christ we were circumcised, only not in a cutting away of physical flesh, but in a putting away of the sinful nature by the Spirit of God. When Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sins he put our sins to death. He conquered them both in his death and in his resurrection. So, when we come to faith in Jesus Christ, we are crucified with Christ to our old sinful nature, we are transformed in heart and mind away from sin and toward God, of the Spirit, and we are given new lives in Christ to be lived out in his holiness and righteousness (See Gal. 2:20; Eph. 4:17-24; Ac. 26:16-18; Ro. 6; Tit. 2:11-14 and 1 Jn. 1-5). This is the working of the Spirit in our lives in regeneration, but it requires that we submit to God and that we cooperate fully with that work of God’s grace in our hearts and lives.

So, again, we need to be watchful. This is an alert that an abduction of the church in America has taken place, it is at a state of national emergency, and the body of Christ needs to be alerted to the dangers of following after man-made religion which is replacing the word of God in the hearts of many who profess Christ as Savior and Lord.

ONLY IN HIM / An Original Work / February 19, 2014

Based off Isaiah 30

Woe to those who look to man’s help;
Who turn away from Jesus Christ;
Forming an alliance not in step with God;
Making their own plans, and praying not.

Willing not to listen to truth,
They close their ears to what is right.
Pleasing words are all that they’ll hear;
Feel good messages that bring cheer.

Trust in your Lord; turn from your sin.
Put your faith now ONLY IN HIM.
Do not turn to idols. They’ll not satisfy.
Jesus will save you. That’s why He died.

Your Lord will be gracious to you.
He cares all about you, ‘tis true.
He forgives you all of your sin
When you give your life up to Him.

Oh, how truly gracious He’ll be
When you bow to Him on your knees;
Turning now from your sin; walking in his ways.
He’ll lead and guide you all of your days.

Now you will sing praises to Him.
He delivered you from your sin.
You’ll tell others now of His grace,
So they may see Christ face-to-face.

Fearlessly Make Known

Wednesday, May 07, 2014, 7:55 a.m. – Speak, Lord, your words to my heart. I read Ephesians 4:17-25 (cf. 1 Peter 1:13-21) and Eph. 6:10-20.

Empty Way of Life

So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking. They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts. Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, and they are full of greed.

That, however, is not the way of life you learned when you heard about Christ and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body… Eph. 4:17-25

As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do… For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. 1 Pt. 1:13-19

The Lord Jesus gave me a vivid picture of this today. There are many within our churches, even (or particularly) among the church leadership, who profess Christ as Savior and Lord of their lives, but they are still, in many ways, living out the empty way of life handed down to them by their ancestors, or by those who taught them, or who are presently teaching them, or by those who are in authority over them. Not only do they live it, but many preach it to others so that others, too, will follow in the same empty way of life. These professors of Christ stand firm, support, sustain and bear the weight of this nothingness on their own shoulders, i.e. they support it, stand on it and convey it in their own human strength.

This is why many of them speak of their style of doing church, their vision for the church, their brand of church, and their philosophy which is to “fuel” to the “right people” and “filter out” those who are not a “good fit” for what they are doing. And they purposefully target and invite into the church fellowship those outside of faith in Jesus Christ, yet not through salvation from sin, but by patterning the church after the world to make it more appealing, inviting and comfortable to the world, i.e. to those “far from God”. So, they often will weed out the more serious follower of Christ (those who don’t fit) in order to make the church more appealing to those “far from God” (those “right people” to whom they are energizing toward). Yet, it is not just one church congregation following this model. There are many!

So, what is this empty way of life being passed down, not only from our ancestors, but from our leaders, who are receiving and accepting it from their leaders over them in authority? It is to live in futility of thinking and reasoning based upon the style, brand, vision and the philosophies of human beings (flesh) without being willing, in particular, to even examine what is being taught to see if it really lines up with the word of God. It is to follow human beings blindly without being willing to examine their teachings against the word of truth.

So many lies, deceptions and manipulations are going on within the church, coming from the church leadership, and from the teaching and philosophies of humans, now being propagated throughout the church body, particularly here in America, I believe. Yet, these lies and deceptions are often a mixed bag of lies and truth, or else they are communicated in such a way as to look and sound like truth, and many, many are blindly buying into them hook, line and sinker. [I have been a witness to this false movement for fifteen years now.]

An example of such is what I term a false grace teaching. This teaching allows the convert to Christianity to willfully and knowingly continue in his or her sin, believing that God’s grace covers it all, and therefore they are free from the obligation to do what they know is right to do, and they are free to do what they know is wrong. Frequently the excuse for continued willful sin is “I’m not perfect.” True, none of us are, but that should never be an excuse for continued willful sins of rebellion against Almighty God and against the truths of his word. Yet, many follow this philosophy ignorant of the truth, because they are not being taught the truths of scripture. As well, they are taught that if anyone tries to tell them differently from what they are being taught, that person is judging them, and therefore that person should be ignored, because they believe that all judgment is wrong, but it is not. And, they are also taught that anyone teaching them the truths of the above scriptures is a Pharisee trying to bring them back under the law. Wow! Satan is very clever, isn’t he?

The Armor of God

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should. Eph. 6:10-20

So, what should our response be to all of this? We should first of all recognize that we are in a spiritual battle, and that our true enemy is not comprised of human beings, though they certainly serve his purposes, but our true enemy is Satan and his hordes. And, so this battle must be won, not with the weapons of this world, but with the spiritual weapons God has supplied his children so that we can take our stand against the devil’s schemes. And, he is a tricky one. He has deceived the minds of so many believers and professing believers in Jesus Christ with his lies and manipulations of truth so that they are not able to distinguish truth from lies, and so they blindly follow after the lies. And, that is the sad reality of the situation of much of today’s modern church movement here in America. We are in great need of a mighty outpouring of the Spirit of God in revival so that people’s eyes are opened to see the lies, to reject them, and to embrace the truth.

Next we must learn how this armor of God is to be applied (put on) each day so that we can take our stand against the devil’s schemes. First of all, we must find our strength and power in the Lord Jesus via submitting to him and to his will for our lives, allowing his Spirit to live out his life in and through our lives. Then, we must get to know Jesus and his word by spending time with him each day away from distractions, studying his word, listening to what he says, bringing our requests before him, and then doing what he tells us to do. Next, we must begin the process of examining everything we are being taught or have been taught against the word of truth to make sure it lines up with scripture, so that we are truly standing on the word of God (of truth) and not on the teachings of humans.

As well, we must put on righteousness as a shield to protect us against the temptations of Satan which try to get us to sin again. We do this through purposefully and intentionally ridding our lives (see Eph. 4-5; Heb. 12:1; Rom. 6; 12:1-2; etc.) of what we know stands against God and his word, and works in opposition to his righteousness in our lives, thus refusing to give the devil a foothold in our lives. And, we put on in our lives what we know is of God, seeking first his kingdom and his righteousness. We have to pursue righteousness. We have to stand strong in the word of God, in the faith passed on to us by the prophets, the apostles and Jesus Christ, and to not yield to or compromise with what is false in order to receive the approval of humans. And, we need to use the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God to counter the lies of the enemy, not only for our own good, but for the benefit of our brothers and sisters in Christ who may be following after deceiving spirits. We must fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, even if we are rejected for doing so.

Who's in Charge?

More Precious Than Silver / Lynn DeShazo

Lord, You are more precious than silver.
Lord, You are more costly than gold.
Lord, You are more beautiful than diamonds,
And nothing I desire compares to You…

Tuesday, May 06, 2014, 6:00 a.m. – The Lord Jesus put the song in mind, “Jesus is All the World to Me.” Speak, Lord, your words to my heart. I read Ephesians 4:1-16 (ESV). http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Ephesians+4&version=ESV

He Led Captivity Captive

I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call— one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. But grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ's gift. Therefore it says,

“When he ascended on high he led a host of captives,
    and he gave gifts to men.”

What does it mean to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which we have been called? By God’s grace, because of Jesus’ sacrifice for our sins, and through his Spirit we were called out of the darkness of sin into the light of God’s truth - his gospel of salvation; out of slavery to sin into freedom in Christ to walk in his righteousness and holiness; out of conformity to the ways, thinking and philosophies of this sinful world into commitment and servitude to live holy lives pleasing to God; and out of following after the ways of humankind into fellowship and obedience to Jesus Christ. So, to walk in a manner worthy of that calling is to daily walk (in lifestyle) in the light; in freedom from the control of sin; and in freedom to walk in Christ’s righteousness and holiness, i.e. in the ways of God, with perseverance and steadfastness of faith, and in thought, word (conversation) and deed.

We are to do so with humility (not pretentious, conceited or arrogant) and gentleness (tenderness), with patience (persevering), bearing (enduring) with one another in love (agape love), eager to maintain (continue) the unity (harmony; agreement) of the Spirit (of God; in agreement with God’s word and the working of the Spirit in our lives) and in the bond (connection) of peace (wholeness; well-being; good; and the benefit of others).

Verse 8 says (KJV): “Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.” What this means is that Christ Jesus, in his death and resurrection, conquered and triumphed over sin and death, over the curse of sin, as well as over Satan (captivity), who leads humans captive to do his will; as well as over the enemy’s areas of control and influence in this world, and over his powers of darkness. Because Jesus Christ conquered death, hell, Satan and sin, we are able to also be victorious, in the power and working of the Spirit within us, over these same forces of evil which come against our lives. In other words, we who have put our hope and trust in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior of our lives no longer are held in bondage to sin for we have been set free. As well, we no longer are without the power to prevent us from being brought under captivity to sin once again or to any of Satan’s devices against us, but we can use the gifts and the armor Jesus Christ has supplied for us in order to stand up against all evil and to defeat it.

To Equip the Saints

And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.

So, what does this first section (vv. 1-10) have to do with vv. 11-16? – Everything! If we are to be prepared, trained and armed (equipped) for the work of the ministry, we must first of all have a practical understanding of how this first group of verses is to be applied daily to our lives. We can’t be knowingly giving the devil a foothold in our lives and expect that we are going to be able to do the work of the ministry in the power and working of the Spirit within us, because we would be shooting ourselves in the foot, so to speak. We have to realize that God’s grace has provided the way out from under captivity to Satan and his wicked schemes against us, and we must take that way out if we are going to be effective ministers for the gospel of Jesus Christ. And, we must thus put on Christ with all his righteousness and holiness so that we can walk in the Spirit and in the ways of God.

We who are believers in Jesus Christ comprise the body of Christ, i.e. we are his earthly representatives. God has assigned certain individuals within the body to thus equip us for the Lord’s work and to build up (inspire; encourage; motivate; move; urge and admonish) us in the Lord. The goal is that the whole body should attain to the unity of the faith.

“Unity,” nonetheless, is a buzzword in many of today’s modern church congregations, but often this unity is not unity with Christ and with his word and for the benefit of others, but it is unity with the thinking, philosophies, teachings and marketing schemes of human leaders who would have you following them and their visions and goals; their messages and their style of doing church; and their brand of church and their philosophies, often which target certain people groups and “filter out” those they deem to not be a “good fit” for what they are doing. And, they are ok with that. I know the speech. I have heard it over and over again. This is how they are being trained. They only want people who are on board with their human plans and teachings, and they will discard those who hold fast to the truths of scripture. They may include scriptures here and there, but many of them do not teach the scriptures, but the philosophies of humans. Some tell lies and disguise them as truth. And, those who would challenge them are not “fit” for their particular way of doing church.

So, God has assigned certain individuals within the body of Christ to speak the truth of God’s word into these situations so that the body of Christ is not deceived, and so they are not led astray by what is false, and so they do not become captive to the cunning and craftiness of humans in their deceitful scheming, and so we are not tossed back and forth by various winds of teaching which would keep us from standing on the word of truth, but would lead us to supporting and defending the teachings of humankind. As well, we are all called upon to speak the truth in love one to another so that we can mature in every way into Christ who is the HEAD of the church (not humans). When Christ is the HEAD, the word of God is our authority for all that we do, not the teachings of humans. When Christ is the HEAD, we all FIT and we each have a part to do as assigned by the Spirit of God, not man.

We need to open our eyes so we are not tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.

Jesus is All the World to Me / Will Thompson

Jesus is all the world to me,
My life, my joy, my all;
He is my strength from day to day,
Without Him I would fall.
When I am sad, to Him I go,
No other one can cheer me so;
When I am sad, He makes me glad,
He’s my Friend.

Jesus is all the world to me,
My Friend in trials sore;
I go to Him for blessings, and
He gives them o’er and o’er.
He sends the sunshine and the rain,
He sends the harvest’s golden grain;
Sunshine and rain, harvest of grain,
He’s my Friend.

Jesus is all the world to me,
And true to Him I’ll be;
Oh, how could I this Friend deny,
When He’s so true to me?
Following Him I know I’m right,
He watches o’er me day and night;
Following Him by day and night,
He’s my Friend.

Jesus is all the world to me,
I want no better Friend;
I trust Him now, I’ll trust Him when
Life’s fleeting days shall end.
Beautiful life with such a Friend,
Beautiful life that has no end;
Eternal life, eternal joy,
He’s my Friend.

That We May Know Him Better

Friday, May 02, 2014, 6:00 a.m. – the Lord Jesus put the song in mind, “Believe Him.” Speak, Lord, your words to my heart. I read Ephesians 1:15-23 (NIV).

Life, as we know it, has its ups and downs. We face new situations every day. Most always we have decisions we have to make. Sometimes we just need wisdom to know what to say or to not say, or what steps to take next. Frequently we are faced with circumstances where we need to know which way to turn, whether to stay or to go. Occasionally, or perhaps oftentimes for some of us, we face hurts, rejections, disappointments, difficulties and heartaches, and so fears may plague us and tempt us to withdraw or to not move forward. Or, we may believe God is moving us in a certain direction, but we can’t really see where it is headed, and there are confusing parts about it we don’t understand, and so we are not sure how to proceed. And, so we need guidance and direction.

As well, life can sometimes hit us very hard with a huge punch, and our emotions can get the best of us. Frequently we may need to just step back from the situation long enough to evaluate it, pray over it, and allow God to heal our broken hearts, i.e. we may need time to grieve, but not so long that we check out and we don’t get back into life and live. Relationships can be difficult and complicated. We all have different personalities, backgrounds, experiences, histories, etc. That is a good thing that we are not all the same, but it can get messy sometimes, too. So, we need wisdom and guidance there, too. Yet, in all these things, for those of us who are in Christ Jesus, we have much encouragement from these verses concerning what we have and who we are in Christ, to give us hope and peace.

God is In Control!

For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all God’s people, I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.

Our Father God provides us with wisdom, insight and discernment into who He is and into the truths of God’s word, and how to practically apply them to our life situations. He does this through his Spirit whom he has given to those who love him.

He also gives us an inner awareness to know and to understand the hope to which he has called us, i.e. to know why we are here, who we are in Christ, and what assignments of the Spirit he has for us to do (fill) within the body of Christ; and to know all that God has provided for us, i.e. all the richest spiritual blessings and provisions we have in Christ Jesus. He also promises us much hope for our future, but not just the promise of eternal life in heaven. His word gives us many more hopeful promises concerning what he has for us yet in this life, while we still live on the earth. For instance, he promises us his peace, joy, perseverance, continued presence, love, counsel, and endurance throughout our daily lives.

He also provides for us his incomparably (unimaginable) great and divine power, working, strength and might to work miracles in and through our lives and in our circumstances. That, to me, is awesome! God the Father, who raised Jesus Christ from the dead and seated him at the right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, is at work in and through my life; and in and through the circumstances of my life. He has a plan and a purpose for it all, and he will bring good out of (work all things for good for me in) my life situations, and all for his glory. There is nothing in my life which escapes his notice. He is never surprised, though I may be at times. And, he has already gone before me to prepare the way. Even when I don’t see the light at the end of the tunnel, or I don’t know exactly what he is doing, or where something is headed, I can trust in his sovereignty, power, strength, providence, rule and authority over all things.

Right now in my life I am stepping out in faith in an area I have traveled before, though not with the same people, but where I have been wounded deeply in many past experiences. Although God has healed me, has given me much hope for my future, and has sustained and directed my life in miraculous ways over the years, and through each of these past situations, the human part of me is feeling some apprehension. Yet, the Lord Jesus has been encouraging me greatly through his word and through song, and he has been assuring me that he has it under control. I don’t know what lies ahead, but God does. I don’t know where God is taking me in this, but he does. And, so he asks me to just trust him and to walk with him one day at a time, leaning on his everlasting arms all the way. So I surrender to him, believing him that he will work it all out for his glory, and for my good. Amen!

Believe Him / An Original Work / July 15, 2013

My heart cries: Lord, won’t You hear me
Seeking You for the answers
To my heartache and questions
I have concerning my life?
Speak, Lord, to me right now.

“Oh, dear one, why don’t you trust Me
With your life’s circumstances?
Give your all on the altar
In submission of your will
To My purpose for you.

“Surrender your life completely
To your Lord and your Savior.
He has all things planned for you
For His glory and honor.
He’ll work all things for good.

“Believe Him. He will fulfill all
Of His promises to you
For your life and your future.
Trust Him. Rest in His love.
He’ll give you peace from above.”

For the Praise of His Glory

Thursday, May 01, 2014, 3:33 a.m. – The Lord Jesus put the song in mind, “My Heart’s Desire.” Speak, Lord, your words to my heart. I read Ephesians 1:1-14 (NIV).

Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God,

To God’s holy people in Ephesus, the faithful in Christ Jesus:

Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will— to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and understanding, he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, to be put into effect when the times reach their fulfillment—to bring unity to all things in heaven and on earth under Christ.

In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, in order that we, who were the first to put our hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory. And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.

What does it mean to be holy and blameless in God’s sight? First of all, “holy” means to be set apart by and for God (and his service); “properly, different (unlike); for the believer, means ‘likeness of nature with the Lord’ because ‘different from the world’” (http://biblehub.com/greek/40.htm). The word “blameless” means “without blemish; faultless; figuratively speaking, to be morally, spiritually blameless, unblemished from the marring effects of sin” (http://biblehub.com/greek/299.htm). It means that Jesus Christ paid the price for our sins, i.e. he took our place in dying for our sins so that when we come to him by his grace, through faith, we have Christ’s righteousness credited to our account. Thus, we are positionally righteous in God’s eyes because of what Jesus Christ did for us, and not because of anything we have done to earn or to deserve our salvation.

Yet, is the purpose to be merely positionally righteous so that we can go to heaven one day? Is the holiness and blamelessness for which we were predestined only to be seen from a positional standpoint, i.e. that which promises us both forgiveness of sins and eternity with God in heaven? What was the object of Christ’s sacrifice for our sin? – Merely to give us hope of heaven and forgiveness of sins? - Or, so that, in Christ, and in the power of his Spirit within us, we might walk daily in his holiness and live blameless lives? I believe scripture teaches that our salvation is both possessive and progressive (See Heb. 10:10, 14), as well as it promises hope for our future. We are not spiritually reborn just so we can go to heaven. We are to be set apart for God and to be separate and different from the world, free from the “marring effects” of sin, and becoming like Christ in our daily walks of faith while we still live on the face of this earth (See Ro. 6; Tit. 2:11-14; Gal. 2:20).

Yet, in all practicality, we can never be completely holy and blameless in our actions, thoughts and attitudes while we still live on this earth, and while we still live in flesh bodies. So, living holy and blameless lives is not about our performance in order to gain some kind of approval from God. It is only because we have been made righteous in Christ Jesus that we can now walk freely in the Spirit of God and in his holiness and righteousness within us - free not just from the penalty of sin, but free from slavery to sin (See Eph. 2:21; 5:3; 1 Pet. 1:15; 2:5; 2 Pet. 3:11; 1 Thess. 4:7; 2 Tim. 1:9; 2:21, et al).

Because of what Christ did for us, and in view of his mercy to us, we are thus urged to present ourselves to God as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to him, which is our reasonable service of worship of him. We are to no longer be conformed to the ways of this world, but we are to be transformed in the renewing of our minds (See Ro. 12:1-2).

All of what Jesus Christ did for us in dying for our sins, in being resurrected to life, in giving us new life in Christ by his grace, through faith, and in making us holy and blameless in God’s sight is (and we are) for the praise of his glory. In other words, all of this is for the purpose of and is intended to result in a fitting recognition, worship and celebration of who God is in all his righteousness and holiness; in all his love and grace; in all his power and majesty; and in all his purity and integrity. In other words, we do nothing in ourselves to deserve or to earn such recognition for what Christ Jesus has done and is doing in our lives, so again, this is not about performance. This is about us submitting to our Lord in full submission to him, allowing him to work his will in and through our lives, and for the purpose that his name alone should be honored and praised! So, in all that he accomplishes in and through our lives, we give him all the honor and praise, as well as our very lives themselves are to result in the praise of Him for all that He has accomplished! Amen!

My Heart’s Desire / An Original Work / June 29, 2013

Based off Rm. 10; Lu. 9:23-26; Ep. 4:20-24

Loved Ones, Oh, my heart’s desire
Is that you might come to Jesus.
Many appear zealous for God,
But they do not trust in Him.
They have not submitted to the One
Who saved them from their sins;
Not forsaken their sins,
Nor have they obeyed their King.

The word of the Lord is near you:
The word of faith we’re proclaiming:
That you must confess your faith
In Jesus as your Lord and King:
Believe in Him as your Lord,
And follow Him where’er He leads.
Share the gospel; be a witness,
And meet others’ needs.

Beautiful are the feet of those
Who bring the good news of Jesus:
Anyone who would come to Him
Must deny himself today;
Die to sin and self, and
Let the Spirit transform you in heart;
Put on your new self in Jesus,
Yielding to the cross.
