True Grace vs False Grace

“15Speak these things as you encourage and rebuke with all authority. Let no one despise you.”

I, as a woman of God, have no authority over any man, yet I can still speak with the authority of the Scriptures the truths of what the Scriptures teach. And I can put these writings out on the internet for anyone to read them who wishes to do so. But I am in no position whatsoever to make anyone do what the Scriptures teach we all must do if we are to be genuine followers of Jesus Christ. All I can do is to just share what the Lord is teaching me and what He is putting upon my heart to share with others for their good.

False Grace

Now, the subject matter in today’s lesson has to do with the grace of God. But before I get into what this is teaching I want to state that many people today, including many pastors of “churches,” are teaching a diluted and false grace message. For many are teaching that God’s grace is only forgiveness of sins and a promise of eternal life with God. For they teach that God does no longer require repentance (death to sin) and walks of obedience to His commands now that we are under the New Covenant. But that is a lie!

So we have large numbers of people professing faith in Jesus Christ who are continuing in deliberate and habitual and addictive sin against God, with sexual sin seeming to be at the top of the list but not the only sin leading to addictive behaviors. And many of those sinning are being taught that God does not judge them for their sins, and/or if they are steeped in sin, usually sexual sin, they are just to “claim who you are in Christ” so that they do not feel guilty for engaging in deliberate and habitual sin against God.

So habitual and deliberate sin among those who profess faith in the Lord Jesus is running rampant within the gatherings of the church. So many people are living in addictive sinful behaviors. They are regulars, the committed who keep returning to the same sins even though they know that what they are doing is evil, and that it is sinful, and that it is hurting others. But it has such a grip on their lives that they keep going back to it over and over. And the sin becomes their god, their “love” which truly they want more than anything else. No matter who gets hurt, sin is still their practice.

True Grace

But if we read what the Scriptures teach about deliberate and habitual sin, and if we read what they teach as the true grace of God, we will realize that God’s grace is not just forgiveness of sin and a free ride to heaven. And God’s grace is a not a free pass to keep living in sin without repentance and obedience to our Lord’s commands. For in Jesus’ death on that cross He put our sins to death with Him so that, by God-persuaded faith in Him, we will now deny self, die to sin, and follow our Lord in obedience to His commands.

Titus 2:11-14 BSB (Berean Standard Bible)

“11For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to everyone. 12It instructs us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live sensible, upright, and godly lives in the present age, 13as we await the blessed hope and glorious appearance of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ. 14He gave Himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds.”

This is true grace! This is biblical grace! For it was God’s grace which sent Jesus to that cross to put our sins to death with Him and then to be raised from the dead victorious over sin, Satan, death, and hell. And by faith in Him we can now be crucified with Christ in death to sin and be raised with Christ to walk in newness of life in Him, no longer to live as slaves to sin but as servants of righteousness. For if sin is what we obey, and not God, we will die in our sins. We will not have eternal life with God (see Romans 6:1-23).

God’s grace to us was and is in providing for us a way to be freed from our addiction to sin so we will now serve the Lord Jesus with our lives in obedience to His commands in holy living. It was and is that we might be transformed to the likeness of Jesus Christ by God who is now molding us into His likeness, i.e. those of us whose lives are surrendered to the Lord. For Jesus shed His blood for us to buy us back for God (to redeem us) out of our slavery to sin so that we would now be zealous to obey His commands.

Weep and wail o’er your sins, children.

God is calling out to you:

Be ye honest; tell the truth,

And it will set you free.

Harken to Him calling you to

Bow on bended knee today.

Don’t delay to let Him in,

And He’ll cleanse your hearts;

Pure within. 

Sinners, won’t you listen to Him

Calling out to you today?

He died so that you would be free

Of your sins always.

Turn from your sin. Turn to Jesus.

Obey Him in ev’ry way.

He wants to set you free of

All your guilt, 

For which He did pay. 

Listen! Listen!

Don’t close your hearts

To His voice speaking to you.

He will give you all of His peace,

If your hearts be true.

He longs for you to come to Him

Humbly now and repentant.

Obey all of His commandments.

Live with Him eternally.
