“Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.” (Romans 8:1-4 NASB1995)
What does it mean to be “in Christ Jesus”? It is not a status that we now wear as a result of a verbal confession of Christ as Lord. It means that, by God-persuaded and God-gifted faith in our Lord Jesus we have been crucified with Christ in death to sin, and raised with Christ to walk in newness of life in him, no longer to live as slaves to sin, but as servants of righteousness, in walks of surrender to God’s will, and in obedience to his commands in holy living, by the grace of God, in the power of God, and by the will of God.
And what does it mean that the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death? For the Jews who believed in Jesus Christ, it meant they were no longer under the Old Covenant liturgical, ceremonial, sacrificial, purification, circumcision, dietary, and Sabbath laws. And for both Jew and Gentile, by faith in Christ, it means that we have been delivered out of our addiction to sin so that we can now walk worthy of God and of his righteousness in the power of God now living within us.
By the grace of God, via God-gifted faith in Jesus Christ, we put off those old lives of living in sin and for self which were far from God, and we put on our new lives in Christ Jesus, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. Sin no longer has mastery over our lives, but now God – Father, Son Jesus Christ, and Holy Spirit – is our Lord (Owner-Master), and he is the one directing our steps, and not the flesh. He is the one guiding us in the way that we should go, thus we now follow Jesus Christ with our lives.
So, this is not freedom to keep living in sin without conscience and without true biblical remorse while we ignore God’s commandments under the New Covenant. By Jesus’ death on that cross he condemned sin in the flesh so that the righteousness of God’s moral law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk (in conduct, in lifestyle) according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit, in walks of obedience to our Lord in holy living, doing what pleases the Lord, no longer living to please our sinful flesh in disobedience to God.
Sadly we have many people today teaching verse one absent of the rest of what this teaches us, and they are convincing many people that a mere profession of faith in Christ Jesus now means that they are “in Christ Jesus,” and are thus forgiven all their sins, and they are being guaranteed heaven as their eternal destiny with God. And many of them are teaching that since we are not under “The Law” (of Moses) that we no longer have to obey God and his commandments, but that is a lie from hell, and Satan rejoices.
But Jesus Christ taught that to come to him we must deny self, take up our cross daily (die daily to sin), and follow (obey) him. For if we hold on to living in sin and for self, we will lose our lives for eternity. But if we deny self, die daily to sin, by the Spirit, and we walk in obedience to our Lord and to his commands, in his power, then we have eternal life with God. For not everyone who calls him “Lord” will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one DOING (obeying) the will of God (see Luke 9:23-26; Matthew 7:21-23).
So, believe God’s Word, taught in its fulness, and don’t believe the lies.

Bombs are bursting. Night is falling.
Jesus Christ is gently calling
You to follow Him in all ways.
Trust Him with your life today.
Make Him your Lord and your Savior.
Turn from your sin. Follow Jesus.
He will forgive you of your sin;
Cleanse your heart, made new within.
Men betraying: Our trust fraying.
On our knees to God we’re praying,
Seeking God to give us answers
That are only found in Him.
God is sovereign over all things.
Nothing from His mind escaping.
He has all things under His command,
And will work all for good.
Jesus Christ is gently calling
You to follow Him in all ways.
Men deceiving: We’re believing
In our Lord, and interceding
For our nation and its people
To obey their God today.
He is our hope for our future.
For our wounds He offers suture.
He is all we need for this life.
Trust Him with your life today.
