“For God alone my soul waits in silence;
from him comes my salvation.
He alone is my rock and my salvation,
my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken.
How long will all of you attack a man
to batter him,
like a leaning wall, a tottering fence?
They only plan to thrust him down from his high position.
They take pleasure in falsehood.
They bless with their mouths,
but inwardly they curse. Selah
“For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence,
for my hope is from him.
He only is my rock and my salvation,
my fortress; I shall not be shaken.
On God rests my salvation and my glory;
my mighty rock, my refuge is God.
Trust in him at all times, O people;
pour out your heart before him;
God is a refuge for us. Selah” (Psalms 62:1-8 ESV)
If, in truth, and in practice, we are true followers (disciples) of Jesus Christ who have died with him to sin and who are now walking in obedience to his commands and no longer in sin, by the grace and in the power of God, then who are our enemies? Who are those who are coming against us to attack us? Who wants to destroy us and to make us afraid and to dishearten us? Who wants to break us down so that we will stop serving our Lord?
Besides Satan (the devil), they are the same enemies that Jesus had and who wanted to destroy him. So they include others who profess the same faith in the same Christ/God as we do, who claim heaven as their eternal destiny, and Jesus as their Lord and Savior. Or they may just claim faith in the one true God, but God is Father, Son (Jesus Christ), and Holy Spirit. And they may be church leaders such as pastors and elders, and the like.
Now they may not all do so aggressively, though some will. Others may do so more deviously and deceptively, but with the same intent, at least to cast us off as unwanted and as unnecessary because we don’t fit in with their marketing goals and schemes for how to grow their “churches,” and for how to “draw in large crowds of people from the world” into their gatherings. And so we may be invited to “go someplace else where you will be a better fit.”
But whether the opposition is more aggressive or is more sly and deceptive, the result is still the same. We are the rejected. We are the unwanted and the cast off. And we are treated like this for many of the same reasons that Jesus was treated the way that he was, because he didn’t fit the mold of those who were in positions of power and authority over the people, and because he spoke the truth that the rulers did not want to hear.
And why did they oppose him? Because he confronted them in their sins, and he called sin what it was, and he called people to repentance, to changed lives, to leave their lives of sin behind them and to now follow him in obedience to his commands. And he exposed the lies and the liars and the hypocrites for what and who they were so that the people would not be led astray by them, and so that the people would not follow after their unrighteous example. And we are to be truth tellers who expose lies.
But they aren’t the only ones opposed to us if we are following Jesus Christ with wholehearted devotion and obedience to him. They are some of those who make no claims to Christianity, too. And they are government heads of nations, and politicians, and the media, and CEOs of corporations, and the pharmaceutical industry, etc. And their main opposition to us is going to be through deception and through convincing others that we are the ones who are misguided, and eventually through a new world order government.
For the Bible warned us ahead of time about the times in which we are now living, and about the times yet to come. And the Scriptures warn us, too, against putting our trust in “princes” (heads of nations, government leaders) and in human beings and in military forces which cannot save. For many who some people may regard as “trusted” may not be trustworthy at all, but may be our gravest enemies in disguise who say they are the “good ones.”
So, we need to be people of God whose trust is in God alone. And we must be people who are testing whatever we are hearing in prayer and in wisdom and discernment given to us by God, and who are testing what we read or hear against the teachings of the Scriptures taught in their appropriate context. For lies and liars are everywhere you look today. So Jesus Christ is the one you must trust and depend on, then you will not be shaken.

My Jesus, My Savior
By Michael W. Smith
My Jesus, My Saviour,
Lord, there is none like you,
All of my days, I want to praise
The wonders of Your mighty love.
My comfort, my shelter,
Tower of refuge and strength
Let every breath, all that I am
Never cease to worship You.
Shout to the Lord, all the earth let us sing,
Power and majesty, praise to the King!
Mountains bow down and the seas will roar,
At the sound of your name!
I sing for joy at the work of your hands,
Forever I'll love you, forever I'll stand
Nothing compares to the promise I have in You.
