Habakkuk 2

Then the Lord replied: "Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets so that a herald may run with it. For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false. Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay."

Why Did Jesus Die?

Video Talk

1 Peter 3:10-12 ESV

“Whoever desires to love life

    and see good days,

let him keep his tongue from evil

    and his lips from speaking deceit;

let him turn away from evil and do good;

let him seek peace and pursue it.

For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous,

and his ears are open to their prayer.

But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”

Why did Jesus Christ die on that cross? Was it just so we could be forgiven of our sins so that when we die we get to go to heaven? No! It was so that we might die with him to sin and live to him and to his righteousness. It was so we might now live for him and no longer for ourselves. And he shed his blood for us on that cross to buy us back for God (to redeem us), which means to rescue us out of our lives of sin and to change us so that we now honor God with our lives and we no longer live for the pleasures of the flesh.

[1 Peter 2:24; 2 Corinthians 5:15; 1 Corinthians 6:19-20; Romans 6:1-23]

And this is why this says that whoever desires to love life and see good days, he is to keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit. For Jesus said that if anyone would come after him he must deny self, take up his cross daily (die daily to sin and to self) and follow (obey) him. For if we hold on to our old lives of living in sin and for self, we will lose them for eternity. But if for the sake of Jesus we die with him to sin and live to him and to his righteousness, then we have the hope of eternal life in him (see Luke 9:23-26; Romans 6:1-23; Romans 8:1-14; Galatians 5:16-21).

And it is why this says that we are to turn away from evil and do good, which is the good that our Lord prepared in advance that we should walk in, and not our own good deeds of our flesh (See Ephesians 2:8-10). And the peace that we are to pursue is not world peace where we join in with the people of the world in one voice and one mind and one heart so that no one disagrees with anyone else, for that is not of God. For we are to be like-minded with Christ and with his righteousness, and not with the world. So this peace is peace with God, and not peace with the world.

For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and the righteous are not those who merely make a profession of faith in Jesus Christ. The righteous are those who are living righteously as God is righteous, and for whom righteousness is their practice. They are those who are living out their faith in practice. And those who do evil are those who make a practice of evil, and they could be some or many who also profess faith in Jesus Christ. For you can profess faith in Jesus Christ, but if sin is what you practice, then you are an evildoer, and the face of the Lord is against you, not for you.

So, bottom line in all of this is that Jesus Christ gave his life up for us on that cross in order that we might die with him to sin and live to him and to his righteousness. And if righteousness, holiness, and godliness are not our practice, and if we do not obey our Lord, but if sin is what we obey and practice, then the Scriptures teach that we will not inherit eternal life with God, and heaven will not be our eternal home, regardless of what our lips profess. For lip service only is not going to gain us entry into God’s heaven.

Christ the Lord is Risen Today

By Charles Wesley, 1739

Christ the Lord is ris’n today, Alleluia!

Sons of men and angels say, Alleluia!

Raise your joys and triumphs high, Alleluia!

Sing, ye heav’ns, and earth, reply, Alleluia!

Lives again our glorious King, Alleluia!

Where, O death, is now thy sting? Alleluia!

Once He died our souls to save, Alleluia!

Where thy victory, O grave? Alleluia!

Love’s redeeming work is done, Alleluia!

Fought the fight, the battle won, Alleluia!

Death in vain forbids His rise, Alleluia!

Christ hath opened paradise, Alleluia!

Soar we now where Christ hath led, Alleluia!

Foll’wing our exalted Head, Alleluia!

Made like Him, like Him we rise, Alleluia!

Ours the cross, the grave, the skies, Alleluia!

Hail the Lord of earth and heaven, Alleluia!

Praise to Thee by both be given, Alleluia!

Thee we greet triumphant now, Alleluia!

Hail the Resurrection, thou, Alleluia!

King of glory, Soul of bliss, Alleluia!

Everlasting life is this, Alleluia!

Thee to know, Thy pow’r to prove, Alleluia!

Thus to sing, and thus to love, Alleluia!
