Habakkuk 2

Then the Lord replied: "Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets so that a herald may run with it. For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false. Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay."

What God Hates

Video Talk

Proverbs 6:16-19 ESV

“There are six things that the Lord hates,

    seven that are an abomination to him:

haughty eyes, a lying tongue,

    and hands that shed innocent blood,

a heart that devises wicked plans,

    feet that make haste to run to evil,

a false witness who breathes out lies,

    and one who sows discord among brothers.”

(#1) The Lord hates haughty (arrogant, self-important) eyes (appearances, mannerism), like for example speaking of someone who is great in his own eyes, by his own estimation of what he perceives as his own greatness and/or superiority. And this kind of person can get very angry when others don’t see him or appreciate him as he perceives himself to be. And so he may be one who then lashes out at others and perhaps plots evil against them because they do not marvel at his self-perceived greatness.

(#2 & #6) The Lord hates lying tongues and false witnesses, too. Now people lie for all sorts of reasons, one of which is to hide their own sins and their own character and so that other people will think better of them than they really are and/or so that their sins will not be found out. And so they put on a performance to present themselves in a way that they think will be acceptable but while they secretly are creating all sorts of evil, even evil acts against others, even against the innocent. And some of that evil is in giving false witness about other people to make them look bad so that the liar looks better by comparison.

(#3) The Lord hates hands that shed innocent blood. Now I am anti-violence and I hate guns (my personal preference), and I hate war and killing of people, all people. And I believe what the Bible says that vengeance belongs to God and that he will repay, and that we are to love our enemies and pray for them and do good to them and bless them by speaking truth into their hearts and lives, i.e. the truth, if believed, which can save them from their sins and so they can have eternal life with God. And so much killing is just to satisfy the sinful cravings of people in positions of power in the world.

(#4 & 5) The Lord hates a heart that devises wicked plans, and feet that make haste to run to evil. And his word teaches us that evil plots and evil acts come from what is stored up in the human heart. So the evil person out of his evil treasure in his heart produces evil. And out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, and slander, etc. These are what defile a person. So, when people plot and carry out evil, it is because of what is stored up in their hearts, which includes hatred, resentment, bitterness, and unforgiveness towards other people.

[See Matthew 15:17-20; Luke 6:45]

(#7) And the Lord hates one who sows discord among brothers. And to sow discord is to scatter and to spread conflict and friction among the family of God. But let me add a caution here, for in many of these institutional market-driven churches they are accusing those who are walking in obedience to the Lord Jesus of sowing discord if they are at all verbal about the truth of the gospel and/or if they are confronting the lies of Satan. But the kind of discord this is speaking of is all that is opposed to God and to his word and to his will for our lives.

Now the reason that God hates all these things is because they are all opposed to him and to his word and to his will for our lives, so they are an affront to him and to his divine character and will. But he also hates these things because these are all things which hurt and harm other people, in particular the people of God. And these are all sinful things, and he hates sin because of what sin does to us and how it destroys us. And that is why Jesus died on that cross to put our sin to death with him so that we can now die with him to sin and live to him and to his righteousness.

Oh, to Be Like Thee, Blessed Redeemer

Lyrics by Thomas O. Chisholm, 1897

Music by W. J. Kirkpatrick, 1897

Oh, to be like Thee! blessèd Redeemer,

This is my constant longing and prayer;

Gladly I’ll forfeit all of earth’s treasures,

Jesus, Thy perfect likeness to wear.

Oh, to be like Thee! full of compassion,

Loving, forgiving, tender and kind,

Helping the helpless, cheering the fainting,

Seeking the wandering sinner to find.

O to be like Thee! lowly in spirit,

Holy and harmless, patient and brave;

Meekly enduring cruel reproaches,

Willing to suffer others to save.

O to be like Thee! while I am pleading,

Pour out Thy Spirit, fill with Thy love;

Make me a temple meet for Thy dwelling,

Fit me for life and Heaven above.

Oh, to be like Thee! Oh, to be like Thee,

Blessèd Redeemer, pure as Thou art;

Come in Thy sweetness, come in Thy fullness;

Stamp Thine own image deep on my heart.
