“It is for discipline that you endure; God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline? But if you are without discipline, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. Furthermore, we had earthly fathers to discipline us, and we respected them; shall we not much rather be subject to the Father of spirits, and live? For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but He disciplines us for our good, so that we may share His holiness. All discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness.” (Hebrews 12:7-11 NASB1995)
God’s discipline is not necessarily a disciplinary response to wrongdoing, although it could be. It could be for purposes of training and instruction and nurturing that he allows us to go through trials and tribulations. And this is to teach us the ways of the Lord so that we will walk in them. And discipline is used to humble us to make us more receptive to his teachings. And this is to mature us in Christ in our walks of faith in obedience to our Lord. And it is used to prepare us for God’s callings on our lives, to get us ready for service.
And in what ways might he discipline us? He may allow other people to come against us and to attack us or to accuse us falsely of wrongdoing, like Job’s friends did to him. He may allow us to be stricken with sickness or with poor health or some kind of physical ailment. Or he might allow us to lose a job and income and to struggle with how we will be able to feed our family. Or he may allow others to mistreat us and to persecute us because we stand on the truth of the Scriptures and the gospel that Jesus taught to the people.
All of these trials and tribulations, and many more, are for our good, to humble us, to teach us, to get us ready for service, to correct us if we are starting to go the wrong direction, and to draw us closer to our Lord in a greater seriousness of relationship with him so that he can use us for his glory to speak his messages to the people. For when we face trials, and our faith is being tested, it will either lead us away from God or closer to God than we ever were before, and to a greater and deeper dedication to him.
But God also disciplines those who are of faith in Jesus Christ but who have wandered to some extent from the seriousness of relationship with him they once had, or should have had. He may allow tragedy of a great magnitude to come upon his church who have gone the ways of the world in order to win the world to their gatherings and so they have diluted his gospel message to make it less offensive and more acceptable to the ungodly and to human flesh. For he wants to bring them to repentance and to renewed faith in him.
He may also discipline his wayward church severely for making the people of this world and the things of this world their treasure and their god and the one they follow in place of being followers of Jesus Christ committed to his service. For so much of today’s church has gone the ways of the world, and they have compromised with the world, and they are bowing to men in their deceitful scheming and treating them almost as though they are gods. And so they are not those who are following in the ways of the Lord above men.
And this goes right along with the letters to the seven churches in Revelation chapters 2-3. Jesus had good to say to 6 out of the 7, but 5 of those he also had words against. And he warned them of some kind of judgment if they did not repent and obey the Lord. Only one, the church in Laodicea, did he have nothing good to say of them. And many people see that church as representing the church (overall) of the last days. And Jesus is pictured as standing outside the door asking to be let inside into fellowship with them.
And a time is coming soon (I don’t know how soon) when we are going to see the events of the book of Revelation taking place in our day. I believe we can already see some of them, especially the ones spoken of in Revelation 13, already alive and active in our day and time. And I believe it is getting ever closer to the time when we are going to see the judgments of God on the church and on our nations, or most especially in the USA. For the USA is not what our rulers claim her to be, but the opposite of what they profess.

To the angels of all the churches write:
These are the words of your Lord and your God.
I know all your deeds, and your witness, too,
And who holds to My words and tells what’s true.
I know all your hard work and your perseverance,
Yet I hold against you: you’ve forsaken Me.
Listen to what I say to you.
You have people there who deny My name,
And who put the cross of Christ up to shame.
They entice the people to Me, profane,
And their worship of Me is all in vain.
They are so adult’rous as they chase their idols,
And you put up with them easily enough.
Listen to what I say to you.
You give off an image of godliness,
But what you present is so fraudulent,
Or else you lack passion for Jesus Christ,
So you look to others to tell what’s right.
I say turn from your sin, or you will face judgment.
He who overcomes will have eternal life.
Listen to what I say to you.
I know your afflictions and poverty;
How you suffer for your Lord patiently.
Do not fear the devil and company.
You be faithful to your Lord endlessly.
I know all your weakness and your dedication.
You have kept My Word and not denied your Lord.
I will write on you My new name.
