Then the Lord replied: "Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets so that a herald may run with it. For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false. Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay."

Donkeys Honking

Donkeys honking in their pride,

Taking others for a ride,

Telltale signs of something bad,

Someone somewhere has been had.

Magic tricks, that is their game,

Mischief making, all the same.

Looking, though, to others blame,

Absolute, they feel no shame.

Corner others with their tricks,

That is how they get their kicks.

Who, they think, can they deceive?

Who can they get to believe?

Consciences, they have been seared,

God the Father they not fear.

Human hearts care nothing for

People’s feelings, they ignore.

All about themselves, they are,

Care not people’s lives they mar.

Selfish, selfish, to the core,

It’s themselves that they adore.

Cry to them that they would change,

That their hearts would rearrange,

Not a flicker, not a flinch,

They will not budge, not one inch.

Sad that many, this they are,

That they’ve gotten yet this far,

Hard as nails and cold as stone,

They are evil to the bone.

Sad the evil that they do

Stabbing others’ hearts right through.

Bitter hearts right to the core,

So the Bible they ignore.

If You Do What is Right

1 Peter 3:1-7 BSB (Berean Study Bible)

“1Wives, in the same way, submit yourselves to your husbands, so that even if they refuse to believe the word, they will be won over without words by the behavior of their wives 2when they see your pure and reverent demeanor.

“3Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair or gold jewelry or fine clothes, 4but from the inner disposition of your heart, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in God’s sight. 5For this is how the holy women of the past adorned themselves. They put their hope in God and were submissive to their husbands, 6just as Sarah obeyed Abraham and called him lord. And you are her children if you do what is right and refuse to give way to fear.

“7Husbands, in the same way, treat your wives with consideration as a delicate vessel, and with honor as fellow heirs of the gracious gift of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.”

The Right Thing To Do

I am going to present a scenario here which is probably in the majority of households, at least here in the USA it is, based off current statistics. And I want us to examine that scenario in light of the teachings of the Scriptures, and not just the ones quoted above. A man and a woman, both professing faith in Jesus Christ, got married to one another. Now what the woman did not know is that her husband was not living a morally pure life, but he was living in adultery against her even before they got married, and it continued throughout their marriage, and they are still married and living together.

Some people will advise that she should just leave him, that she should divorce him. But does the Bible teach that a man or a woman must divorce an unfaithful spouse? I don’t believe it does. They have the biblical right to do so, but it doesn’t say that they must, as far as what I recall. So what if the couple agree to remain together but the wife decides that, biblically speaking, she is no longer bound to submit to her husband sexually, and her husband agrees to that arrangement? Is she in the wrong? Is she still required to be in an intimate relationship with a sexually addicted spouse?

To The Scriptures

“4Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.” Hebrews 13:4

“14 With eyes full of adultery, they never stop sinning; they seduce the unstable; they are experts in greed—an accursed brood! 15 They have left the straight way and wandered off to follow the way of Balaam son of Bezer, who loved the wages of wickedness.” 2 Peter 2:14-15

“It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that even pagans do not tolerate: A man is sleeping with his father’s wife. 2 And you are proud! Shouldn’t you rather have gone into mourning and have put out of your fellowship the man who has been doing this?” 1 Corinthians 5:1-2

“13The body, however, is not meant for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. 14 By his power God raised the Lord from the dead, and he will raise us also. 15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never! 16 Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, ‘The two will become one flesh.’ 17 But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit.

“18Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body. 19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.” 1 Corinthians 6:13-20

“3But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people.” “6Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. 7 Therefore do not become partners with them.” Ephesians 5:3,6-7

“3It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; 4 that each of you should learn to control your own body in a way that is holy and honorable, 5 not in passionate lust like the pagans, who do not know God; 6 and that in this matter no one should wrong or take advantage of a brother or sister. The Lord will punish all those who commit such sins, as we told you and warned you before. 7 For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. 8 Therefore, anyone who rejects this instruction does not reject a human being but God, the very God who gives you his Holy Spirit.” 1 Thessalonians 4:3-8

“28But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” Matthew 5:28 ESV

“For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander. These are what defile a person.” Matthew 15:19-20 ESV

The Marriage Bed Kept Pure

So, is the marriage bed being kept pure if one spouse, in this scenario the man (but it could be in reverse of this, too), is living in sexual immorality and in adultery against his wife? And the reason for stressing the roles here of male and female is because the woman is supposed to submit to her husband, and not the other way around. Is she required biblically to submit to having relationships with a spouse who is deliberately and habitually living in adultery against his wife as a life pattern? For the marriage bed is definitely not being kept pure in this scenario. It is being adulterated.

“Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never!” 1 Corinthians 6:15

And what defines a prostitute? Interestingly enough, the Greek word for prostitute is “pornĂ©.” And “porn” is short for pornography, which is what so many people are using today in place of or in addition to their spouses in order to gratify their sexual desires. And a prostitute is a “sex worker,” “one who deliberately stimulates or fulfills unwedded sexual desire by dress, speech, or conduct.” “Figuratively an idolater.” (source: Bible Hub Greek Interlinear). So this includes the practice of self-gratification and porn addiction. So if your spouse fits this description, biblically speaking you should not unite with him or with her sexually. For we are not to obey sin!

“Therefore do not become partners with them.” Ephesians 5:7

It does not say we must divorce them or that we cannot live in the same house as them, but that we should not be sexual partners with those who are sexual partners with themselves or with other people. We should not be sexual partners with “one who deliberately stimulates or fulfills unwedded sexual desire by dress, speech, or conduct.” So if you are in a marriage relationship like this, biblically speaking you are not bound to have sex with someone who is having sex outside of the marriage relationship. You are to keep the marriage bed pure. We are not to unite ourselves with a prostitute.

Bible verses on marriage, adultery, divorce, and moral purity:

Following in Christ's Footsteps

1 Peter 2:21-23 BSB (Berean Standard Bible)

21For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in His footsteps:

22“He committed no sin,

and no deceit was found in His mouth.”

23When they heaped abuse on Him,

He did not retaliate;

when He suffered, He made no threats,

but entrusted Himself to Him who judges justly.

Following Christ’s Example

When we believe in Jesus Christ to be Lord and Savior of our lives, it is not just so that we can have our sins forgiven and so we can go to heaven when we die. Jesus gave His life up for us on that cross to redeem us, i.e. to buy us back for God, i.e. to deliver us out from under our addiction to sin so that we will now serve Him with our lives in walks of surrender to the will of God in obedience to His commands. And we who believe in Jesus are to follow after His example in how He lived so that we follow Him in His footsteps.

Flee From Addiction to Sin

Now, Jesus Christ was not born with a sin nature as we are, because He was not conceived of man, but of the Holy Spirit, to a virgin woman. So when He lived on the earth He was both fully God and fully human (God incarnate). Although He was tempted to sin as we are, He never sinned. That will not be true of us who are born with sin natures. But, by the grace of God, and in the power of God, by biblical faith in Jesus Christ, we can be delivered out of our addiction to sin so that we no longer make sin our practice (our habit).

No Lies! Speak Truth!

And no deceit was found in His mouth. We who profess faith in Jesus are to be truth tellers, not liars, not deceivers. Even what some people call “white lies” are still lies. Now this does not mean that you have to tell everyone everything you know or that you have ever done in your life. But we who follow Jesus with our lives are not to be liars, but truth tellers. We are not to be those who say things as though they are truth in order to deceive other people when we know full well that what we are telling them is a lie.

No Retaliation

If we are following Jesus Christ with our lives, and if we are following His example to us in how we are to live, not necessarily in absolute sinless perfection, but definitely in habitual obedience to His commands, and so we are speaking the truth of God’s Word to the people, we should be prepared that even other professing Christians, and “the church,” in general, might heap abuse upon us. For so many have gone the way of the world and have rejected the biblical gospel, and so they may go to attacking us personally.

Although it is certainly acceptable for us to respectfully defend our own honor, as did Jesus and His New Testament apostles when they were being mistreated, or when they were being falsely accused of what they did not do, we are never to retaliate. We are not to do anything to get back at them. Instead, we are to forgive them, and do good to them, pray for them, and love them, and speak the truth to them which is for their good. For we are to do good to those who hate us and who mistreat us (see Luke 6:27-28).

1 Peter 2:24-25 BSB (Berean Standard Bible)

24He Himself bore our sins

in His body on the tree,

so that we might die to sin

and live to righteousness.

“By His stripes you are healed.”

25For “you were like sheep going astray,” but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.

The Gospel

If I had to summarize the message of the gospel of our salvation in a very short statement, I would probably choose to quote 1 Peter 2:24. Why? Because it says it so plainly and yet precisely. For Jesus Christ’s whole purpose in allowing Himself to be crucified on that cross was to put our sins to death with Him so that, by faith in Him, we will now die to sin and live to His righteousness in walks of obedience to His commands in surrender to His will and purpose for our lives. This is what the Scriptures teach us.

Jesus Christ did not die that horrible death on that cross just to forgive us our sins and to guarantee us life eternal with Him in heaven without the purpose and the requirement that we must now die to sin and obey our Lord in holy living, giving glory to God by how we live our lives. For that was the whole reason He died for us, to free us from our addiction to sin so we will now follow Him with our lives wherever He leads us in doing what He has called us to do for His purposes and for His glory. We must follow our Lord!

Jesus, Son of God,

Died for us on a cross.

Anyone who would come to Him

Must deny himself and follow.

He must take up his cross daily;

Die to sin and self each day.

Father, God above,

Loved us so: gave His Son.

If you want to save your old life;

Keep on sinning, follow your ways,

You will lose your life forever;

Hope of heaven gone away.

Spirit of our God

Gives us life in God’s Son.

Nonetheless, if you die to self;

Forsake your sin; follow Jesus,

You will live with God in heaven,

And forever praise His name!

Life Has Its Trials

Life has its trials, sometimes they are many,

And sometimes it feels as some folks not got any.

We never do know, though, what others go through,

For we don’t live with them, don’t know what they do.

But many are those filled with heartaches galore,

While so many others their pain they ignore.

So many weep silently now on their beds,

While others are having a party, instead.

Jesus is one who does care for the hurting,

For those who call to Him, their pain they are blurting.

He’ll reach out and touch them and heal those in pain.

For those who trust in Him new lives they do gain.

He promises not all relief from our suffering,

But from all evil our lives He is buffering.

He comforts in sorrow, gives purpose in pain,

When we will abide in Him, in Him remain.

Chosen for Obedience to God

1 Peter 2:9-10 BSB (Berean Standard Bible)

“9But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, to proclaim the virtues of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.”

Who are The Elect?

To whom is this being addressed? To the elect who are in Christ Jesus by faith in Jesus as Lord and Savior of their lives, chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father and sanctified by the Spirit for obedience to Jesus Christ (see 1 Peter 1:1-2). And to be sanctified is to be made holy, and to be holy is to be set apart for God. So, for the true believer in Jesus Christ, obedience to our Lord is not optional. It is required for salvation and for eternal life with God to be what we, as Christ’s followers, live by in practice.

Chosen for What Purpose?

Well, first of all, we are chosen by God to have faith in Jesus Christ, a faith which comes from God, and is not of our own doing, and which requires that we deny self, die to sin (repent of sin), and obey God and His New Covenant commandments in life practice. We are to be followers of Jesus Christ who follow Him wherever He leads us in doing whatever it is that He has called us to do and to be for His glory, for His honor, and for His purposes. And all of us are called of God to proclaim the message of the gospel to the people.

But we need to make certain that the gospel message we are proclaiming is the one taught by Jesus and by His New Testament apostles, when read and when taught in the correct biblical context. For not everyone “proclaiming the gospel” is teaching the biblical gospel message. Many are teaching lies taught by other humans which say such things as “we do not have to repent of our sins, and we don’t have to obey God,” for they call that “works salvation.” But Jesus and His apostles taught we must repent and obey God.

For Jesus Christ taught that to come to Him we must deny self, take up our cross daily (die daily to sin), and follow (obey) Him. For if we hold on to living in sin and for self, we will lose our lives for eternity. But if we deny self, die daily to sin, by the Spirit, and we walk in obedience to our Lord and to His commands, in His power, then we have eternal life with God. For not everyone who calls Him “Lord” will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one DOING (obeying) the will of God (see Luke 9:23-26; Matthew 7:21-23).

1 Peter 2:11-12 BSB (Berean Standard Bible)

“11Beloved, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from the desires of the flesh, which war against your soul. 12Conduct yourselves with such honor among the Gentiles that, though they slander you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day He visits us.”

Abstain From Fleshly Desires

We who are of genuine faith in Jesus Christ, our Lord, have by God-gifted faith in Jesus surrendered our lives to the Lord, died with Him to sin, and have been reborn of the Spirit to now walk in newness of life in Him, no longer to live as slaves to sin but now as servants of righteousness, in the power of God, as led by the Spirit, and not of our own flesh. And this does not make us perfect, but lack of perfection is never to be used as an excuse for deliberate and habitual sin against our Lord. We must obey our Lord.

So, we are taught all throughout the New Testament Scriptures that we are to abstain from the sinful desires of the flesh which war against our souls. We are not to participate in the fruitless deeds of darkness. Sin must no longer be our practice, but now righteousness and holiness and obedience to our Lord and to His commands must be what we practice. No longer should we be engaged in such things as lying, cheating, stealing, adultery, sexual immorality, and unfaithfulness, etc., but now in holy living, pleasing to God.

[Matthew 7:13-14,21-23; Luke 9:23-26; John 10:27-30; Acts 26:18; Romans 1:18-32; Romans 2:5-10; Romans 3:23; Romans 6:1-23; Romans 8:1-14; Romans 12:1-2; 1 Corinthians 6:9-10,19-20; 1 Corinthians 10:1-22; 2 Corinthians 5:10,15,21; Galatians 5:16-24; Ephesians 2:8-10; Ephesians 4:17-32; Ephesians 5:3-6; Titus 2:11-14; Hebrews 3:1-19; Hebrews 4:1-13; Hebrews 10:19-39; Hebrews 12:1-2; 1 Peter 2:24; 1 John 1:1-10; 1 John 2:1-6; 1 John 3:4-10; Revelation 2:1-29; Revelation 3:1-22]

Conduct Yourselves with Honor

We who are followers of Jesus Christ are to conduct ourselves with honor, in decency, integrity, righteousness, morality, dignity, and in reverence for God and for His Word and for His commands. And we are to do this no matter who we are with. None of us should be chameleons, i.e. none of us should change who we are or how we talk or how we behave depending upon the people we are with. So none of us should act like we are righteous if how we are living is in sin and in immorality and in disobedience to God. Be real!

If we are who we are no matter who we are with, and if we speak what we speak no matter who we are with, and if we do not perform one way for some, and another way for others, but we are consistent in being who we claim to be (not necessarily with absolute perfection), then even if we are slandered, and even if others believe the lies and not the truth about us, we will have no cause to be ashamed. And this is no promise that everyone will see through the lies and that they will see who we really are, in truth.

Yes! It would be nice if everyone would see through the lies, and if they would see the truth of who people are, both those who are good and those who are evil. But sadly we live in a day and time when evil is being treated as good, and when good is being treated as evil, and when lies are being accepted as truth, and when the truth is being rejected as lies. There is so much deception going on in our day and time that it requires real spiritual discernment to separate the lies from the truth. So we need discernment!

Trust and Obey

Words by John H. Sammis, 1887

Music by Daniel B. Towner, 1887

When we walk with the Lord

in the light of His Word,
What a glory He sheds on our way!
While we do His good will,

He abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey.

Not a shadow can rise,

not a cloud in the skies,
But His smile quickly drives it away;
Not a doubt or a fear,

not a sigh or a tear,
Can abide while we trust and obey.

Not a burden we bear,

not a sorrow we share,
But our toil He doth richly repay;
Not a grief or a loss,

not a frown or a cross,
But is blessed if we trust and obey.

But we never can prove

the delights of His love
Until all on the altar we lay;
For the favor He shows,

for the joy He bestows,
Are for them who will trust and obey.

Then in fellowship sweet

We will sit at His feet.
Or we’ll walk by His side in the way.
What He says we will do,

Where He sends we will go;
Never fear, only trust and obey.

Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.

Redeemed From the Empty Way of Life

1 Peter 1:17-21 BSB (Berean Standard Bible)

“17Since you call on a Father who judges each one’s work impartially, conduct yourselves in reverent fear during your stay as foreigners. 18For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life you inherited from your forefathers, 19but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or spot. 20He was known before the foundation of the world, but was revealed in the last times for your sake. 21Through Him you believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and glorified Him; and so your faith and hope are in God.”

The Empty Way of Life

So, what does this “empty way of life” look like? Well, empty can mean “vacant, hollow, void,” i.e. having no real substance to it, devoid of truth and righteousness and holy living because no genuine faith in Jesus Christ ever took place in the person’s life, whether or not they ever professed faith in the Lord Jesus. And this can be a result of what “gospel” message many people are believing or are not believing. For many people today are teaching a false and empty gospel devoid of truth and righteousness.

Many people are teaching “the gospel of Christ” as though all it consists of is Jesus’ death and resurrection, and a verbal confession of faith in Jesus Christ by human beings, after which they are now promised forgiveness of all sins and heaven as their eternal destiny, but regardless of how they live; regardless of whether or not they obey God and His commands and if they leave their lives of sin behind them. Many are teaching that God does not require death to sin and obedience to His commands, which is a bold lie!

But those who are living in addiction to sin will often adopt this false and empty gospel message because it promises them forgiveness of sin and eternal life with God regardless of how they live, in practice. But they are being given a false promise of eternal life with God which will not end up in heaven but in hell. It will not end in the salvation of their lives, but in their deaths for eternity. And that is a very sad reality which breaks my heart! I fear for those who are relying on this empty “gospel” to save them.

1 Peter 2:1-3 BSB (Berean Standard Bible)

“1Rid yourselves, therefore, of all malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander. 2Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, 3now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.”

Rid Yourselves Of..

Sadly, there are many people today who are professing faith in Jesus Christ who are believing that all their sins are forgiven and that heaven is guaranteed them as their eternal destiny, but who are still making malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy, slander, moral impurity, manipulation, faithlessness, and fakery their life practice. But they lie about what they are doing or are not doing as a way to hide the reality of how they are living from other humans. And they may even present themselves to others as righteous.

And they do this out of pride, i.e. they are swelled with pride, and so they do not want to admit that they are living in moral failure, and so they present outwardly that all is well, or that they are living for the Lord and that they are walking in His ways and that God does hear and answer their prayers, etc. And they put on a performance that they are ridding themselves of all of these types of sins mentioned above, but they are faking it. Instead, they are deteriorating and worsening and declining morally. Sad to see!!

Like Newborn Babies

Now this is not suggesting that we act immaturely like babies, but that if our faith in Jesus Christ is of God, and if it is genuine biblical faith which requires death to sin and obedience to our Lord’s commands, that we should crave the teachings of the Scriptures, the Word of the Lord, and we should long to follow our Lord in walks of obedience to His commands, to do what pleases Him. Our heart’s desire should be to do what pleases our Lord and no longer what pleases our sinful flesh. We should hunger for truth and righteousness!

Sadly, far too many who profess faith in Jesus Christ do not hunger after the Lord in the way in which a baby hungers after his or her mother’s milk. Far too many have drifted from the teachings of the Scriptures on what it means to be followers of Christ, those born again of the Spirit of God, who now have an inheritance with God. Far too many professers of faith in the Lord are living still for the flesh and in sinful practices and not in surrender to Christ as Lord (Owner-Master) of their lives while they claim to be In Christ.

But if we are to be of genuine faith in the Lord Jesus, we must surrender our lives to the Lord. We must deny self, die to sin, and obey our Lord and His commands (New Covenant) in life practice. Sin must no longer be our habit, our lifestyle. This is not to say, though, that we will never sin (1 John 2:1-2), but that sin is to not be our practice. And we must obey God in practice. For if we continue living in sin, in disobedience to God, we will not inherit eternal life with God, even if we do profess faith in Jesus Christ with our lips.

Listen to me ev’ryone and

Understand this teaching of Christ:

Why do you break the commands

Of God for the sake of tradition?

When you follow the ways of man,

And don’t obey the words of Christ,

You nullify the words of God,

And you hold to the ways of man.

What comes out of a man’s mouth is

What makes him unclean and dirty.

The things that come out of the mouth

Come from the heart, from within him.

The heart of man is so sinful;

From his nature, out comes evil:

Lying, cursing, greed and malice,

Lust and lewdness, deceit, slander.

Jesus calls us to obey Him;

Turn from our sins; follow His ways.

Yet, His people honor Him with their lips,

but their hearts not with Him.

Their worship of God is in vain.

Their teachings are rules taught by man.

Jesus calls us; gently leads us

To return and follow His truth.

With the Testing of Time

With the testing of time, not are all on God’s side.

Many counterfeits here who of God unaware.

Not like they didn’t know, but refused to Him bow,

And they put on a show which was really quite low.

They pretend to be His, but His word not their Biz.

After flesh they do go, and the world they do know.

Sin is their habitat, go for this, go for that,

Sin a little bit here, sin some more over there.

Righteousness all for show, for the Lord they don’t know.

Flesh is really their King, bow to it everything.

Jesus Christ not their Lord, for with Him they are bored.

The enticement of flesh puts their lives in a mess.

So, the Lord calls to them to repent of their sin,

And to follow Him now, and their lives to Him bow,

Follow Jesus in truth, and to not be uncouth,

Live in holiness here, spend eternity THERE

(in heaven with Jesus).
