“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9 NASB1995)
This verse, taken from the Scriptures, is another that is largely being taught out of context, and it is being used to teach that all you have to do is to admit that you sinned, and all your sins are forgiven. Many people who are living in addiction to sin use this, thinking that if they just admit their sin or say, “I am sorry,” that somehow that makes everything okay. But the word “confess” means to voice the same conclusion as God about our sin, and to be in agreement with what God says about our sin. So let’s look at that.
“This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth; but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us.” (1 John 1:5-8 NASB1995)
The word “Light” is used often in the Scriptures to signify Jesus Christ, God the Father, the truth of the gospel, righteousness, holiness, and godliness. All that is God and is of God is light. And darkness is the exact opposite of light. And the opposite of what is of God is what is of human flesh and what is of the devil. And the opposite of righteousness, holiness, and godliness is wickedness, immorality, sin. And the opposite of truth is lies. And there are many lies being spread in the name of God which are not of God.
So, what is this teaching us? Basically the message here is that if we are professing to be “in Christ,” to be in fellowship with him/God via a verbal acknowledgement of him as Savior, but yet we continue to live in deliberate and habitual sin, in wickedness, immorality, idolatry, and adultery, spewing forth lies, by habit (lifestyle), we are liars who do not practice the truth. So that negates the notion that we can just give verbal “confessions” of sin every time we sin and God/Jesus is going to keep forgiving us. You see?
And I am not saying that we all have to live perfect lives or we are cut off from God. But lack of perfection is never to be used as an excuse for deliberate and habitual sin against God and an unwillingness to submit to Christ as Lord and to obey our Lord’s commands, in lifestyle. For we are all going to be judged by God according to what we do and how we live in practice, by habit. And those for whom sin is their practice, and not obedience to God, they will not inherit eternal life with God.
[1 Corinthians 6:9-10,19-20; Galatians 5:16-21; Ephesians 5:3-6]
But if we walk (in conduct, in lifestyle) in the Light (God/Jesus, truth, righteousness, the true gospel message), and not in habitual sin, then we are in fellowship with God, and we are in fellowship with other people who are biblically in fellowship with God via dying with Christ to sin and being raised with Christ to now walk in newness of life in him in obedience to his commands. So, we can’t just say, “I’m sorry,” if sin is our habit and not obedience to God. We must live holy lives pleasing to God, in his power.

Jesus, lover of my soul,
Cleansed and saved me,
Made me whole;
Purified me, now new within.
By His grace, I’m free from sin.
Holy Spirit lives within,
Teaching me to walk with Him,
Guiding me each step of the way.
Living for my Lord each day.
Father God, He is my Lord.
Walk with Him in one accord.
Follow Him wherever He leads,
Living holy, Him to please.
Witnessing for Him each day,
Loving others in His way,
Telling them about Jesus Christ,
And how they can be made right.
