“So Jesus said to them, ‘The light is among you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.’” (John 12:35-36 ESV)
Now, in context, Jesus was speaking of himself as the Light who was among the people of the earth in the flesh for a period of time (about 33 years) and how he would be with them only for a little while longer, for soon he was going to be put to death on a cross. So this was an encouragement to his listeners at that time that they must believe the Light while they had the Light so that they might become sons of Light. And they were to walk (in conduct, in practice) in that Light, lest darkness overtook them.
And yet, in context, he also said that when he was lifted up from the earth that he would draw all people to himself, and he said this to show by what kind of death he was going to die (vv. 32-33). So his death was not going to be the end of him, otherwise how would he, once he was dead, draw all people to himself? And we know that he did not remain dead but that God the Father raised him from the dead on the third day, and that Jesus showed himself to many people, and then he ascended back to heaven.
But that wasn’t the end of it, either. For then Jesus sent his Holy Spirit to indwell his followers, as he had promised, so that he would still be with us in the person of the Holy Spirit living within us. For God is Father, Son (Jesus Christ), and Holy Spirit. So God lives within all who are following Jesus with their lives. So Jesus Christ is still with those of us who are with him and who believe in him and who have died with him to sin and who are living for him and for his righteousness, in the power of God, for the glory of God.
So Jesus Christ is still among us as he lives within the hearts of those who have trusted in him to be their Lord (Owner-Master) and Savior and who are living for him by the grace of God. And we are his representatives on this earth. We are the light of the world and the salt of the earth, and we are God’s holy people who God called out of darkness into his wonderful light and who are to bear testimony to the Light. But we must first of all be those who are walking in that Light and who are not walking in darkness.
[Matt 5:13-16; Matt 28:18-20; Jn 4:31-38; Jn 13:13-17; Jn 14:12; Acts 1:8; Acts 2:14-18; Acts 26:18; Rom 10:14-15; Rom 12:1-8; Rom 15:14; 1 Co 12:1-31; 1 Co 14:1-5; Eph 4:1-16; Eph 5:17-27; Php 2:1-8; Col 3:16; Heb 3:13; Heb 10:23-25; 1 Pet 2:9,21; 1 Jn 2:6]
For the one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. So if we profess faith in Jesus Christ, but we are still habitually and deliberately sinning against God and against other humans, according to the Scriptures we are still in the darkness, and we have not come into the Light. And we are not in fellowship with Jesus Christ, and we do not know God, and we are not born of God, but we are of the devil. And so we will die in our sins, and we will not inherit eternal life with God, regardless of what we claim.
So, this is an encouragement to all who are alive today that the Light (Jesus Christ) is still among us in the person of the Holy Spirit who lives within the hearts of Jesus’ followers. And he is still speaking to the people through his Spirit and through his word and through his servants and messengers, and he is still saying that we must believe in the Light and walk in the Light while he is still among us for one day we will no longer have that Light.
For one day Jesus is going to return in judgment on the people of the earth, and on all who profess his name, and he is going to judge us according to our works. And there are going to be many who will stand before him professing him as Lord and claiming all that they did in his name. And he is going to say to them, “I never knew you! Depart from me you workers of lawlessness.” Why? Because he said that not everyone who calls him “Lord” will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one DOING the will of God.
So, what is the Light that is among us? It is Jesus Christ in the person of the Holy Spirit, and it is truth and righteousness and the word of God. But it is also holiness, godliness, moral purity, uprightness, honesty, faithfulness, decency, and obedience to God and to his commands under the New Covenant. And we who believe in Jesus are to be those who are walking in this Light lest darkness (sin, wickedness, evil) overtake us. For it is those who walk according to the Spirit who do not fulfill the lusts of the flesh.

Every Morning You Greet Me
Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ,
Every morning You greet me.
Meek and pure, truth and light,
You look pleased now to meet me.
Flourishing, growing in Him each day,
Live with Him forever.
Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ,
Blessed to know Him forever.
