Habakkuk 2

Then the Lord replied: "Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets so that a herald may run with it. For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false. Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay."

You Will Find Rest for Your Souls

Jeremiah 6:10 ESV

“To whom shall I speak and give warning,

    that they may hear?

Behold, their ears are uncircumcised,

    they cannot listen;

behold, the word of the Lord is to them an object of scorn;

    they take no pleasure in it.”

There are people in this world who have a form of godliness but they deny its power (2 Tim 3:5). They give off the appearance that they are true believers in Jesus Christ but they deny him by their actions, by how they live. They are Christians in form and in profession only but not in truth and not in righteousness. They try to mimic Christianity, to a point, but Christ is not a reality in their lives, for they are still being driven by the flesh.

So, even though they know the truth of what God’s word teaches with regard to salvation and to repentance and to obedience and to holiness and righteousness and moral purity, still they hang on to their idols and to their sinful addictions. And they stop up their ears so that they cannot listen. And they do this largely through feeding themselves lies, and by making up their own god and their own faith which agrees with their chosen lifestyles.

They may give a showing that they are taking in the word of God and that they are hearing God speak and that they are doing what he says, but it is performance only. For their actions speak louder than words, and many of their actions are directly opposed to what the Scriptures teach. Sometimes they will even act ignorant of what the Scriptures teach so that they can claim innocence, but they know the truth, so this is all an act.

And sometimes they will make a showing that they are changing, that they are coming out of their addictive lifestyles, and that they are on the right path and that the “other woman” is leaving, that she is on the way out. But she hasn’t left. She is still there in their hearts and minds and actions. And so they are stalling and they are dragging their feet for they don’t really want to give her up. But they want to convince others that they do.

Jeremiah 6:13-14 ESV

“For from the least to the greatest of them,

    everyone is greedy for unjust gain;

and from prophet to priest,

    everyone deals falsely.

They have healed the wound of my people lightly,

    saying, ‘Peace, peace,’

    when there is no peace.”

Some of these people are in positions of Christian ministry and that is why they are trying to maintain the façade that they are doing well or that they are moving in the right direction. So they won’t admit the truth of where they are and of what they are doing when no one else is looking. And that is because they don’t really want to give up the “other woman,” whatever that may be, which could be any kind of sinful addiction they don’t want to let go.

And they don’t want to lose their positions of power and influence and rule and so they live double lives and/or they convince others to follow them in their idolatrous ways. And so they make up a gospel which doesn’t make them feel guilty about their sins. And then they feed it to their people and to the people of the world, and many others decide they like that gospel better, and so many people end up following them in their fake Christianity.

And so they reduce the word “sin” to just “I messed up,” as though it is something minor like accidentally knocking over a glass of milk. And they either do away with the word “repentance” altogether or they change it to merely a change of mind from not believing in Jesus to belief in Jesus, or they define it more like just making a verbal acknowledgment of sin but with no spiritual U-turn, no turning from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God so they can receive forgiveness of sins (Acts 26:18).

Usually they do away with obedience and submission to Christ as Lord or else they redefine obedience as something which automatically takes place when a person believes (not defined) in Jesus, as though a mere acknowledgment of Christ and who he is and of what he did for us on that cross makes them holy and godly and righteous regardless of how they live their lives, even if they are living in gross and deliberate sin.

And so they do heal the wound of people lightly because they tell them that if they pray a prayer and they meant it that now they are saved and that heaven is guaranteed them when they die and it can’t be taken away no matter what they do or how they live from that moment on. They make no requirements whatsoever for true repentance or for walks of obedience to Christ. And so they are telling them “Peace, peace,” when there is no peace, for they are giving them a false assurance of eternal life based on a lie.

Jeremiah 6:16 ESV

“Thus says the Lord:

‘Stand by the roads, and look,

    and ask for the ancient paths,

where the good way is; and walk in it,

    and find rest for your souls.’”

I absolutely love this passage of Scripture! One of my all-time favorites! Some translations say, “Stand at the crossroads and look,” and I like that because it gives a picture of a choice of directions to go which I believe is the picture here. There are many roads we can travel, but truly there are only two choices. One is the narrow road leading to eternal life, and the other is the broad road leading to destruction (Matthew 7:13-14).

I think the idea of standing and looking has to do with an examination. He is saying, “Look at the options before you, but choose the good way.” For the “ancient paths” are a symbol of godliness, holiness, righteousness, moral purity, faithfulness, honesty, repentance, submission, and obedience. And we are to ask for the “ancient paths.” We are to desire the ways of holiness and righteousness and submission and obedience to our Lord.

And then we are to walk in the ways of holiness and righteousness and in obedience to our Lord. And this is not just Old Testament teaching. This is what Jesus and the New Testament apostles taught, too. By faith in Jesus Christ we are to die with Christ to sin and live to his righteousness. Sin is to no longer have mastery over our lives. And we are to no longer live as slaves to sin but now as slaves to righteousness, in God’s strength.

And there we will find rest for our souls, amen! We cannot be at rest when we are still living in deliberate and habitual sin, especially if we are trying to put on a show of righteousness while we are sinning in secret. There is no peace for our souls and there is no peace with God and for eternity for the one who continues in deliberate and habitual sin without regard for God. So we need to choose the good way of death to sin and living to righteousness.

Oh, What Gladness!

An Original Work / December 2, 2013

Give me Jesus. He’s my Savior.

I’ll walk with Him in His favor.

I’ll abide in His love always;

Follow His ways to the end.

Jesus is the Son of God.

He died upon a cruel cross.

He’s forgiven all my failures

By His mercy and His love.

Give me Jesus – His compassion,

And His mercy; loving kindness.

Let Him teach me how to love Him,

And to please Him. He’s my friend.

Jesus died for all our sin

So we could have eternal life.

He will free you from your bondage

If you trust Him with your life.

Give me Jesus. Let me trust Him.

May I listen to His teachings.

May I follow where He leads me

In His service. He’s my Lord.

Jesus Christ will come again

To take His bride to be with Him.

Oh, what gladness; free from sadness

When I meet Him in the air.

Full of Grace and Truth

John 1:1-3,14-18,29,34 ESV

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.”

“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John bore witness about him, and cried out, ‘This was he of whom I said, “He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.”’) For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father's side, he has made him known.”

“The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, ‘Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!’”

“And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.”

Jesus Christ is God

Jesus Christ is the second person of our triune God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And he is God, and he is our creator God. In Genesis 1:26 we read: “Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.’” So, “our” image indicates this is speaking of our triune God who is three distinct personalities in one God (see: Matt 28:19; 2 Co 13:14; 1 Pet 1:2).

Jesus Christ, although he is God, willingly left his throne in heaven and he came down to the earth to be born as a baby to a human mother with God the Father as his Father. Therefore, when Jesus walked this earth he was fully God and fully man. During his life of ministry on the earth he performed many miracles – he raised the dead, delivered people from demons, healed the sick and afflicted, and fed thousands of people with a few fish and a few loaves of bread. And there were even leftovers gathered up after all ate.

Jesus Christ also preached repentance for forgiveness of sins and for eternal life with God. And repentance has to do with us making a spiritual U-turn. It has to do with us being turned from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, i.e. it is about us forsaking our lives of sin to follow Jesus Christ in obedience to his commands (New Covenant). And he said if we are to come after him that we must deny self and daily die to sin and obey him.

But Jesus was hated and persecuted by many of the Jews, in particular by those in positions of power and authority within the temple of God. They were jealous of him because of his temporary popularity among the people and they felt threatened by him and were worried that they might lose their own positions of power among the people. And they didn’t like it that he didn’t follow all their customs and religious traditions handed down to them.

They didn’t like it that he healed people on the Sabbath, which was his regular custom. And they didn’t like the message that he preached, and that he claimed that he was God. And they didn’t like it that he confronted them in their sins and that he did not buy into their lies and their false performances, and that he called them out on their hypocrisy. So they harassed him every chance they could find. And eventually they were instrumental in having him put to death on a cross when he was sinless.

His Grace to Us

But Jesus’ death on that cross was not without purpose. In fact, this was always God’s plan for our redemption that Jesus Christ would be our sacrificial lamb on that cross to take away the sins of the world. For he who knew no sin became sin for us on that cross that we might become the righteousness of God (2 Co 5:21). And He died that we might die with him to sin and live to him and to his righteousness (1 Pet 2:24).

So, in Jesus’ death on that cross he put our sins to death with him so that through God-given faith in him we might be crucified with Christ in death to sin and be raised with Christ to walk in newness of life in him, no longer as slaves to sin but now as slaves to God and to his righteousness. So we must now consider ourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ. Therefore we are to not let sin reign in our mortal bodies, to make us obey its passions, for sin is to have no more dominion over our lives (Rom 6:1-23).

So, God’s grace to us is not just in sending Jesus Christ to die on that cross for our sins so we can be forgiven our sin and be on our way to heaven. God’s grace to us is in freeing us from our slavery (addiction) to sin so that we can live holy and godly lives pleasing to God in his power and strength. For Jesus said that if anyone would come after him he must deny self, take up his cross daily (daily die to sin and to self) and follow (obey) him (Luke 9:23-26; Eph 4:17-24; Rom 8:1-17; 1 Co 6:19-20; 2 Co 5:15).

And God’s grace, which brings salvation, instructs us to say “No!” to ungodliness and fleshly passions and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives while we wait for our Lord’s return. For Jesus Christ gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them (Titus 2:11-14; Ephesians 2:10).

A lot of people these days, though, are teaching God’s grace as though it is only forgiveness of sins so we can escape hell and so we can go to heaven when we die. And they teach it as though it is a one-time decision we make in our lives which guarantees us heaven as our eternal home regardless of how we live our lives on this earth. And so they give their adherents carte blanche to continue in deliberate and habitual sin without conscience.

But that is no grace at all if it leaves us still in slavery (addiction) to sin. God’s true grace delivers us out of slavery to sin and it empowers us to live godly and holy lives in walks of obedience to our Lord. God’s true grace puts us in an intimate marriage relationship with Jesus Christ, the goal of which is that we submit to his Lordship, and that we surrender our lives to him, and that we now become his possession, and that we now do what he says, and that we no longer make sin our practice but righteousness is now our practice – all for the glory of God and all in his power and strength.

He Reached Down

An Original Work / February 3, 2014

Based off Psalm 18

How I love You, Lord, my Rock and my strength.

My God is my fortress; I hide in Him.

He is my shield and the horn of

My salvation, whom I praise.

I have found my refuge in Him.

He reached down from heaven and rescued me;

Drew me out of waters so deep, I’d sink.

He delivered me from Satan

And my slavery to sin;

Gave me hope of heaven with Him.

My God turned my darkness into His light;

Opened up my blinded eyes; gave me sight.

As for God, his way is perfect.

He gives strength to stand secure.

I have found my vict’ry in Him.

My Lord lives! Praise be to my Savior God,

Jesus Christ, who died on a cruel cross.

He is my Rock and the source

Of my salvation, whom I trust.

I will give praise always to Him.

Preach the Word

2 Timothy 4 ESV

“I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.”

Who Can Preach?

The word “preach” in Greek is “kerusso” and it means “to be a herald, to proclaim.” It means to “announce a message publicly and with conviction (persuasion).” It refers to “preaching the gospel of Christ as the authoritative word of God, bringing eternal accountability to all who hear it.” (source: Bible Hub)

In Romans 1 Paul was thankful to God about the Christians (all those loved by God and called to be saints) that their faith was being proclaimed in all the world. And Peter said that we who are the saints of God are a chosen race and a royal priesthood and a holy nation (spiritual, not physical), a people for God’s own possession, that we may proclaim the excellencies of him who called us out of darkness into his marvelous light (Rom 1:7-8; 1 Pet 2:9). So, all Christians, male or female, can preach (proclaim) the gospel.

And to prophesy is to “speak forth” that “which reveals the mind (message) of God in a particular situation” (Bible Hub). And we read in 1 Corinthians 14 that “the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation.” And “speak” is another word for “proclaim.” And we read in Acts 2 (quoting from Joel 2) that in the last days God will pour out his Spirit on all flesh, and our sons and our daughters (both male and female) will prophesy. They will proclaim the word of God.

So, “preaching” (proclaiming) the gospel, and the word of God, is not the same as being a pastor or an elder (an overseer) in the church. One who preaches merely proclaims what the Scriptures teach, but in all practicality and application to our lives today. So, a preacher is not necessarily one who is in a position of authority over anyone, so being a preacher (a herald, one who proclaims the gospel, the word of God) is not assigned to men only.

Reprove, Rebuke, and Exhort

Who can do this? We read in the Scriptures that we, as the body of Christ, are to encourage (exhort, admonish, beseech, give a holy urging to) one another, that we might be mutually encouraged (exhorted) by each other’s faith. And the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement (exhortation).

And we, as the body of Christ, are to speak the truth in love, one to the other, so that we are not carried away by false doctrines being taught by men in their cunning and deceitful scheming, and so that we may all grow to maturity in Christ as each part is working properly (as assigned by God) so that the body builds itself up in love. And we are to be filled with the Spirit and we are to speak to each other in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs.

And we are to let the word of Christ dwell in us richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs with thankfulness in our hearts to God. And Paul said that he was convinced that the Roman Christians were full of goodness, filled with all knowledge and able to instruct one another.

Now, I know Paul said, “my brothers,” but that was often a generic term to include all followers of Christ. And the letter to the Romans was to all “who are loved by God and called to be saints.” For if we took the term “brothers” to mean only men, then the Bible is not written for women, too, but it is. So the point here is that women as well as men are to exhort (urge) one another and to encourage one another in the faith.

But women are not to serve in positions of pastor or elder or overseer and women are not to teach men in a position of authority over them to where they can exercise church discipline. But women can preach, and they can prophesy (proclaim the word of God and the messages of God), and they can teach the Scriptures, but they are just not to be in positions of authority over men. And a man who is humble is not afraid to hear what a woman is learning from the Lord and to allow the Spirit to speak through her to him.

[1 Thess 5:11; Rom 1:12; 1 Co 14:3; Eph 4:1-16; Eph 5:15-21; Col 3:12-17; Rom 15:14]

That Time is Here

And why is the above mentioned so important in our day? Here in America? Because that time is here when people are not enduring sound teaching but having itching ears they are indeed accumulating for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and they are turning away from listening to the truth, and they are wandering off into myths. And many men of the gospel who are supposed to be teaching sound doctrine are not, but many of them are saying what people’s itching ears want to hear, instead.

Not many men who call themselves Christians in America, and/or who serve in positions of pastor and elder and overseer in the church, appear to be teaching sound doctrine, nor are they sharing the truth of the gospel. For so many men in today’s church here in America have gone the way of the world, and many of them are walking in sin, especially in sexual sin, and so they aren’t talking much about Jesus nor are they sharing his gospel (the whole counsel of God) but they are teaching a diluted gospel, if any.

So God is raising up women who will. Now, I know there are women who are trying to serve in positions intended only for men, and I am not supporting that, but honestly, if there are no men of God who are living holy lives to fill those positions, then it would be better to have a woman speaking the truth to the people rather than have men who are teaching lies. But I in no way am advocating for women to fill the positions meant for only men. But if God wants to get his messages across, he will even use a donkey, if necessary.

The truth needs to go out and many people need to hear the truth, and God has called both men and women to proclaim the excellencies of him who called us out of darkness into his wonderful light. He has called both male and female to speak forth his truths from his word to all who will listen. And we all need to be proclaiming that Jesus died on that cross so that we would die with him to sin and live to him and to his righteousness (1 Pet 2:24).

To Know the Love of Christ that Surpasses Knowledge

Paul (once called Saul) was a Pharisee who once persecuted Christians for their faith in Jesus Christ and who tried to stop the gospel of Jesus Christ from spreading. But God had mercy on him, and he called him to open the eyes of the blind and to turn them from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God so that they might receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those sanctified by faith in Jesus Christ (Acts 26:16-18).

He considered himself the very least of all the saints because he had once persecuted the saints for their faith in Christ Jesus before Jesus met him on that road to Damascus and turned his heart around. So, God did not call him because he had led an exemplary life all his life, but God called him according to his will and purpose for Paul’s life even from before Paul was born; even from before the earth was formed (2 Tim 1:8-9; Ps 139:13-16).

Now, in order for God to use him, the Lord had to change his heart, and Paul had to cooperate with God in that work of grace in his life. Paul had to be turned from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God in order for the Lord to use him to share his gospel with others. And he had to walk according to the Spirit and no longer according to the flesh, and he had to obey the Lord in doing what he told him to do, in the power of God.

But Paul could not take credit for any of it. He was absolutely humbled by God calling him, for he knew where he had been and what he had done, and so he knew this was from God and not from himself and that he did nothing to earn or to deserve this calling on his life. His dependency was totally in the Lord Jesus and not in himself which is exactly where he needed to be for God to use him. I totally get that! I empathize. Somewhat similar story here.

Ephesians 3:14-19 ESV

“For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.”

Because of where Paul had been, and because Jesus Christ had rescued him from his former life and had given him a new life with new purpose and direction, he cared passionately for the lives of others and for their relationships with Jesus Christ and their walks of faith. He cared deeply for the church, the body of Christ, that they would no longer walk in sin but that they would now walk in righteousness and in obedient faith to the Lord, and that they would fulfill the purpose for which they were created, too.

So, he prayed for them passionately and consistently and specifically. And he taught them what it meant to be saved from their sins and to have eternal life with God. And he taught them regarding what God had saved them from and what he had saved them to, and he encouraged them regularly to walk in the light that they had been given and to do all that the Lord had commanded them to do (New Covenant).

He did not assume that all of them were of genuine faith in Jesus Christ and so he continued to teach them on turning from sin and walking in obedience to the Lord and on the importance of dying to sin daily and living to God and to his righteousness. He stressed holiness and righteous living. And he taught them on how to rely on the Lord Jesus for their strength to live the Christian life and in order to do what pleased the Lord.

He stressed spiritual maturity and growing in our knowledge of the will of God for our lives. And he taught the reality of Jesus’ love for us, not just that he gave his life up for us on that cross so we could be delivered from our slavery (addiction) to sin, but that he provides for us everything that we need to live godly and holy lives for his praise and glory. He does not abandon us to figure it out on our own. He guides us every step of the way.

For so many people today are teaching God’s love for us in a way that says that Jesus died for us on that cross merely to forgive us our sins and to promise us heaven when we die. But he died that we might die with him to sin and live to him and to his righteousness (1 Pet 2:24). He died to transform us and to conform us to his likeness and to fill us with His Spirit and to use us for his glory to minister his love and grace to others.

So, the Christian life is not about just getting saved so that when we die we can go to heaven. And it is not so we will join an institutional church and get involved there and do good deeds and make new friends. Becoming a Christian is about dying with Christ to sin and now living to God and to his righteousness 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We should be his 100%, even when we are sleeping, and definitely all our waking hours, too.

For when we believe in Jesus with God-given faith we lose our lives that we had before and we now become God’s possession and he owns us and we now serve him and we do what he says. For he has a plan and a purpose for our lives just like he had one for Paul and so we need to follow his lead.

He Reached Down

An Original Work / February 3, 2014

Based off Psalm 18

How I love You, Lord, my Rock and my strength.

My God is my fortress; I hide in Him.

He is my shield and the horn of

My salvation, whom I praise.

I have found my refuge in Him.

He reached down from heaven and rescued me;

Drew me out of waters so deep, I’d sink.

He delivered me from Satan

And my slavery to sin;

Gave me hope of heaven with Him.

My God turned my darkness into His light;

Get Rid of the Poop, Then be Cleansed

2 Chronicles 7:13-15 ESV

“When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command the locust to devour the land, or send pestilence among my people, if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land. Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayer that is made in this place.”

A Flying Cockroach

I am not going to go into the history of what is behind these words this time, but I feel the Lord is wanting me to just look at what this is saying with regard to the gospel of our salvation. For this contains large components of the gospel message.

So, I stopped there because I was feeling sleepy and thought I might lay down for a bit before I continued. So I went into the bathroom to brush my teeth and to get ready for bed when I encountered a very large flying cockroach. We do get some of these occasionally, but we had not had any all winter and I was definitely enjoying not having them around. But then the cockroach disappeared from sight and then I didn’t feel comfortable about trying to go to sleep knowing a large flying cockroach was on the loose.

Well, as I have shared before, sometimes the Lord uses real life situations as parables in my life to illustrate a biblical truth or a specific message the Lord is wanting me to receive and/or to share. And “cockroach” is a term used to describe a person who is a liar, a deceiver, a manipulator, someone not trustworthy, someone who is an opportunist and egocentric. So it also represents someone who is spiritually unclean.

And when you think of a bathroom, it is a place where we flush away (get rid of) our refuse (waste, garbage, muck, filth, lewdness, immorality, i.e. sin). Symbolically it is a place where we cast off and put away from ourselves our sin. And then we have a sink and/or a shower which is the place where we wash and get clean, and so symbolically this represents us being cleansed by the blood of Christ and made pure and righteous in God’s sight.

So, symbolically speaking, the bathroom represents the gospel for it is the place where we rid our lives of sin and where we are cleansed and made new by the grace of God, by God’s Spirit. So if a “cockroach” is flying around in my bathroom that would mean a liar, a deceiver, and someone who is not trustworthy is flying (soaring, rising, increasing, is in the air) in the gospel message which is spreading and which is being aired all over the place.

Liars and Deceivers

Liars and Deceivers are everywhere. Some of them are preachers and teachers of the Scriptures. Some of them are politicians or people of prominence and great influence in society. Some of them are newscasters and talk show hosts and CEOs of corporations and heads of divisions of government. And some of them are fellow Christians (or professing Christians) and friends and neighbors and/or family members.

And some of these liars and deceivers and their lies and deceptions are taking off and they are being widely accepted and aired as part of the gospel. And primarily what is being aired the most and accepted the most is this gospel message which is telling people that they can just “believe” (not defined) in Jesus, have their sins forgiven, and now they are on their way to heaven regardless of how they live their lives from then and forward.

There is no flushing away of their sins and so there is no cleansing and being made new because we have to first die with Christ to sin if we are to be raised with Christ to walk in newness of life in him. We have to first humble ourselves before the Lord and pray and seek God’s face and turn from our wicked ways and then God will forgive our sin. The Old Self must be put to death with Christ so that we are no longer enslaved to sin but to God and to his righteousness, by the grace of God, and in His power and strength.

All throughout the New Testament we are taught that we must repent (turn from our sins) and turn to God to follow him in his ways and in his truth. We must now walk according to the Spirit and no longer according to the flesh. We must deny self and daily die to sin and follow Jesus in obedience. And we must no longer walk in darkness (sin) but we are to walk in the light as God is in the light and the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin (1 Jn 1:5-9).

So, if you have people telling you that all you have to do is “believe” in Jesus, but they don’t tell you that belief means we die with Christ to sin and we live to him and to his righteousness, then they aren’t telling you the truth. They need to tell you that we must put off our old ways of living in sin and for self, and that we are now to be transformed of the Spirit of God and to be given new lives in Christ Jesus to be lived for the glory of God in walks of obedience to him. This is the essence of the gospel message.

We are not forgiven of our sins by a mere profession of faith in Christ. Jesus said that not everyone saying to him, “Lord, Lord,” will enter into the kingdom of heaven but only the one DOING the will of God the Father who is in heaven (Matt 7:21-23). And the Scriptures are real clear that if we live in deliberate and habitual sin that we will not inherit eternal life with God.

Wonderful Grace of Jesus

By Haldor Lillenas, 1918

Wonderful grace of Jesus,

Greater than all my sin;

How shall my tongue describe it,

Where shall its praise begin?

Taking away my burden,

Setting my spirit free;

For the wonderful grace of Jesus reaches me.

Wonderful grace of Jesus,

Reaching to all the lost,

By it I have been pardoned,

Saved to the uttermost;

Chains have been torn asunder,

Giving me liberty;

For the wonderful grace of Jesus reaches me.

Wonderful grace of Jesus,

Reaching the most defiled,

By its transforming power,

Making him God’s dear child,

Purchasing peace and heaven

For all eternity—

And the wonderful grace of Jesus reaches me.

Wonderful the matchless grace of Jesus,

Deeper than the mighty rolling sea;

Higher than the mountain, sparkling like a fountain,

All-sufficient grace for even me!

Broader than the scope of my transgressions,

Greater far than all my sin and shame;

Oh, magnify the precious Name of Jesus,

Praise His Name!

How We Live Matters for Eternity

John 8:12 ESV

“Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’”

Following Jesus Christ is not optional for the person of true faith in Jesus Christ. We can’t separate “believer” and “disciple.” If we don’t become a disciple then we are not a true believer. For Jesus said that if anyone would come after him he must deny self, take up his cross daily (daily die to sin and to self) and follow (obey) him. He doesn’t separate “believer” from “disciple.” And we are called to make disciples of Christ of people.

Paul didn’t separate “believer” from “disciple” either. He taught that faith in Jesus Christ meant dying with Christ to sin and living to God and to his righteousness. He taught that faith in Jesus Christ meant our old self was crucified with Christ in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin but to God and to his righteousness, and that if sin is what we obey it ends in death, not life.

So, believing in Jesus means we follow Jesus in obedience. The two can’t be separated. For the righteous requirement of the law is fulfilled in us who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. And if we say we know God but we do not obey his commands (New Covenant) then we are liars. And if we say we have fellowship with God while we still walk in habitual and deliberate sin, we are liars and the truth is not in us.

So, those who believe in Jesus Christ with God-given faith have been crucified with Christ in death to sin, and they have been raised with Christ to walk in newness of life in him, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. Sin is no longer their master but Jesus is their Lord. Sin has been put to death in their lives so that they can now walk in obedience to the Lord. And now they are the Lord’s disciples and their lives should no longer be characterized by those who walk in darkness but who walk in the light as God is in the light, and the blood of Jesus cleanses them from all sin.

[Lu 9:23-26; Rom 6:1-23; Rom 8:1-17; Eph 4:17-24; Tit 2:11-14; 1 Pet 2:24; 1 Co 6:19-20; 2 Co 5:15; 1 Jn 1:5-9; 1 Jn 2:3-6; 1 Jn 3:4-10]

John 8:31-32 ESV

“So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, ‘If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’”

Remember how James said that even the demons believe in Jesus and yet they shudder? (Jas 2:19) Not all belief is of God. Not all belief is the kind that ends up in salvation from sin and eternal life with God. Some belief is of the flesh and it is shallow and it does not turn the person from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God so that he can receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those sanctified by faith in Jesus Christ (Acts 26:18).

Jesus knew these Jews had not really believed in him which is why he told them that IF they abide in his word, then they are truly his disciples, and then they will know the truth of the gospel of our salvation and that truth, if they believe it in truth, will set them free from their slavery to sin, and it will give them the hope of eternal life with God. So what Jesus was describing was progressive salvation. We must walk in that truth to have eternal life.

Jesus taught progressive salvation and so did Paul and so did John, etc. We are saved (past), we are being saved (present and active), and we will be saved (future) when Jesus returns and he takes his bride to be with him for eternity, which is when our salvation will be complete and not until then. But this is conditional on us continuing to walk according to the Spirit and not according to the flesh, and to walk in obedience to our Lord and not in sin. For if we make sin our practice we will not inherit eternal life with God.

[Jn 8:31-32,51; Jn 14:15-24; Jn 15:1-12; Rom 2:6-8; Gal 6:7-8; Rom 6:1-23; Rom 8:1-14,24; Rom 11:17-24; Rom 13:11; 1 Co 1:18; 1 Co 15:1-2; Col 1:21-23; 2 Tim 2:10-13; Heb 3:6,14-15; Heb 5:9; Heb 9:28; 1 Pet 1:1-5; 2 Pet 1:5-11; 2 Pet 2:20-22; 2 Tim 1:8-9; Matt 7:21-23; 1 Jn 2:3-6,15-17,24-25; 1 Jn 3:4-10,24; 1 Jn 5:2-3; 2 Jn 1:6; Jas 1:21-25; Eph 4:17-24]

So, the Jews responded to Jesus by stating that they were the offspring of Abraham and that they had never been enslaved to anyone. And then this was Jesus’ response:

John 8:34-36 ESV

“Jesus answered them, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.’”

Again, this is teaching progressive salvation because the end result is subject to what we practice in this life. If we sow to please the flesh, we will reap destruction, but if we sow to please the Spirit, we will reap eternal life. If sin is what we practice, it will end in death. But if righteousness and obedience are what we practice, it will end in eternal life with God.

Well, then the Jews who had believed Jesus claimed that Abraham was their father and then Jesus said that if they were Abraham’s children that they would be doing the works that Abraham did. And then he told them plainly that they were doing the works their father did and that they were of their father the devil, and that their will was to do their father’s (the devil’s) desires. Wow! (You can read the whole conversation in John 8:31-59)

So, what does this teach us? We can’t practice sin and be servants of the Lord, too. If we practice sin we are slaves to sin, and if we are slaves to sin we are not truly free from sin. Therefore we are not slaves to righteousness and so our end is not heaven but it is hell unless we repent and we change course. But if we follow the Lord we will not walk (in practice) in sin. And if we abide in his word, then we are truly his disciples. Again this teaches progressive salvation not the one-time deal many are teaching today.

So, how you live matters for eternity. How you live matters in this life, too. Our salvation from sin is not just forgiveness of sins so we can go to heaven when we die. Our salvation is deliverance from our slavery to sin so that we can now walk in holiness and righteousness and in obedience to our Lord, and so we can live fruitful lives for the kingdom of heaven, and so we can make a difference in other people’s lives for eternity (same verses as noted above).

He Lifted Our Burdens

An Original Work / February 15, 2014

Based off Isaiah 9:2-7

People walk in darkness.

They abide in their sin.

It has power o’er them.

True belief escapes them.

Jesus Christ came to save them.

He gave His life up for them;

Crucified; died for our sin,

So we might be forgiven,

And have life up in heaven.

Many come to know Him.

God’s love now o’erflows them.

They rejoice in vict’ry.

Their sin is but hist’ry.

We were once bound in slav’ry.

Jesus lifted our burdens;

Set us now free from Satan,

So we now walk in freedom.

Sin has no more dominion.

Praise be to our Savior!

He showed us His favor.

He took all our burdens;

Cast them all upon Him.

He is our mediator;

The Light which shines in darkness.

Counselor in our troubles;

He gives peace now in our hearts;

Joy which is everlasting.

God Had a Plan for My Life

An Original Work / May 29, 2022

God formed me in the womb of my mother

He planned I would serve Him and no other

He spoke to me one day through a sermon

He wanted me, wanted me to hear Him

I sat on that hard bench in pavilion

At camp which is stationed in Vermillion

I left sin and Satan’s life dominion

No longer was I earth’s flesh civilian

Citizen of heaven now my station

The joy of which now to my elation

My Lord Jesus Christ now my salvation

My fellowship with Him now my haven

My age then was prob’ly six or seven

I knew I was on my way to heaven

My sins now I knew were then forgiven

My life was for God to live to please Him

Now skip nearly fifty years to future

Called of God to now use a computer

With Lord Jesus Christ as now my tutor

And Holy Spirit there me to nurture

Called of God to write down what I’m learning

From His Word in promises and warnings

And of the things His Word now instructing

And of his love and grace now informing

This is my call of God, it’s my mission

To share with the world God’s call and vision –

The life He now has for us to live in

In holiness, freedom now from our sin

So, walk with him daily in obedience

Don’t delay but let it be immediate

Leave your lives of sin, don’t be deviant

Follow Christ in all ways, be expedient

Servant of Christ or Man Pleaser?

Galatians 1:3-5 ESV

“Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave himself for our sins to deliver us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen.”

Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, gave his life up for us on that cross to deliver us from the present evil age, according to the will of God. This is what Jesus’ death on that cross was all about, to deliver us from evil, to deliver us out of this sinful world that we might be separate (unlike, different) from the world now that we are being conformed to the likeness of Jesus Christ. For this is what it means to be holy, which we are to be.

It doesn’t mean that we don’t live in the world. We do. But that we are to no longer partake in the things of this sinful world. We are to no longer take on the character and attitudes and behaviors of those who are of this world and who are living according to the flesh. We are to no longer walk in sin like we did before Jesus delivered us from our slavery to sin. But we are now to walk in holiness and in righteousness in the power of God living within us.

[Lu 9:23-26; Rom 6:1-23; Rom 8:1-17; Rom 12:1-2; Tit 2:11-14; 1 Pet 2:24; 2 Co 5:15,21; 1 Co 6:19-20; Eph 4:17-24; 1 Jn 2:15-17; etc.]

Galatians 1:6-9 ESV

“I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed.”

The “different gospel” Paul was addressing here was what the Judaizers were trying to convince the Gentile Christians that they needed to follow for salvation. They were telling them that they had to be circumcised (males only, I believe), and that they had to keep some of the Old Covenant liturgical and ceremonial laws and customs, perhaps more specific to days in weeks and religious holy days and foods that they could or could not eat.

This is not something that most of us Christians are being faced with today, although legalism does still exist, and there are still Judaizers today who are trying to convince Christians that it would improve their walks of faith if they were more like Jews in some ways and if they participated with them in some of their religious customs and practices.

But the “different gospel” which is permeating the church (or what is falsely called “church”) here in America is what has been named the “cheap grace gospel” because it cheapens and it diminishes and it adulterates the grace of God and the gospel of Christ so that it does not teach that Jesus died on that cross to deliver us out of this evil age. It teaches that Jesus died to forgive us our sins and to promise us heaven when we die, and it stops there.

This “different gospel” which is the predominant gospel being taught in the church in America, although not in every congregation, does not teach that we must die with Christ to sin. It does not teach that faith in Jesus Christ means that we forsake our lives of sin to follow Jesus in obedience, even though that is what the Scriptures teach. It teaches we can “believe” (not defined) in Jesus and now heaven is secured us no matter what.

So, if we teach that God requires repentance (turning away from our sinful practices) and turning to him to follow him in obedience, as necessary components of believing faith which saves, then we get accused of teaching works salvation or Lordship salvation. But what we are teaching is what Jesus taught and it is what Paul and the other apostles (New Testament) taught, so it is the truth of the gospel and it is why Jesus died on that cross.

[Lu 9:23-26; Jn 6:35-58; Jn 15:1-11; Rom 6:1-23; Rom 8:1-17; Eph 4:17-24; 1 Pet 2:24; 1 Co 6:9-10,19-20; 2 Co 5:10,15,21; Tit 2:11-14; Jas 1:21-25; Rom 12:1-2; Eph 2:8-10; Php 2:12-13; Col 1:21-23; Col 3:5-10; Gal 5:16-21; Eph 5:3-6; Gal 6:7-8; Rom 2:6-8; Heb 10:26-27; 1 Jn 1:5-9; 1 Jn 2:3-6; 1 Jn 3:4-10; Matt 7:21-23; Ac 26:18; Rev 21:8,27; Rev 22:14-15]

So, if any people are teaching the opposite of this, and if they are teaching that you don’t have to repent of your sins and that you don’t have to obey the Lord and that you can keep living in sin, only now guilt free, and that heaven is guaranteed you when you die regardless of how you live, they are lying to you and they are to be accursed (given up to destruction).

Galatians 1:10 ESV

“For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.”

One of the reasons that people are teaching this cheap grace gospel is because they are seeking the approval of man (of the flesh) and they are not seeking the approval of God. And this is because the church in America has largely gone the way of the world and has turned their gatherings into marketplaces where they are marketing “the church” to the people of this sinful world. And so they are doing what will attract them to “the church.”

And so they have altered the meaning of “church” to where it is now a business of man which is appealing to the felt needs of the people of the world because their goal is to draw in large crowds of people from the world to their gatherings. And so they learn ways in which they can attract the people of the world through entertainment, fun, games, motivational speeches, and friendly and relaxed and non-threatening atmospheres.

For they not only want to fill their “churches” (businesses) with the people of the world, but they want them to keep coming back. And so they purposefully do what will keep them coming back, including they dilute the gospel to make it more acceptable to the people, for they don’t want to offend anyone with the truth of the gospel. So drawing in people from the world has nothing to do with leading them to genuine faith in Jesus Christ.

And so those who are looking for the approval of man and who are not living their lives to be pleasing to God are not true servants of Christ, but they are charlatans or they are wolves in sheep’s clothing or they are flim-flam artists whose goal it is to add numbers of people to their gathering so that they can grow their businesses which they falsely call “churches.” And some of them have the goal to turn hearts away from Jesus Christ, too, sadly enough.
