“Therefore, being always of good courage, and knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord— for we walk by faith, not by sight— we are of good courage, I say, and prefer rather to be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord. Therefore we also have as our ambition, whether at home or absent, to be pleasing to Him. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.” (2 Corinthians 5:6-10 NASB1995)
Do you ever feel this way? It is not that we have a death wish, but living in these earthly bodies, and facing the kinds of things we are being faced with in this world of ours, may lead us sometimes to long to be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord in the place in which he dwells in heaven. Now God does, by his Spirit, live within the hearts of us who have put our faith and trust in Jesus Christ to be our Lord and Savior, so we who are of genuine faith in Jesus are not absent from the Lord, only physically.
But sometimes life is hard, isn’t it? We face trials and tribulations of many kinds. And as we age our bodies don’t work as well as they did when we were much younger. Our minds may not work as well as they did when we were younger, too, and we may become forgetful. And our minds may go blank sometimes, and we won’t be able to remember people’s names or even our own mailing addresses or phone numbers or whatever. And I can definitely identify in that area, but I am glad this is just sometimes.
And then there is all the chaos and angst and drama and hatred and violence and deception going on in the world, and in our nations, and in some of what are called “churches,” but which are just businesses being marketed to the world in order to draw in large crowds of people from the world into their gatherings. Lies and liars abound! Fakery is everywhere. In our digital age anything can be faked, photoshopped, altered, or AI generated to look real when it is not real at all. So we have to be very biblically discerning people.
So, we have to have our focus on the Lord and not on the things of this sinful world. Our minds must be set on living holy lives, pleasing to God, and not on living for sinful and sensual pleasures. And we must be those who walk by faith, and not by sight, for our trust cannot be in other humans or in reliance on other people or jobs or financial income to get us through every day. All those things could go away in a flash. And we could be left with nothing of this world. So our trust has to be in the Lord and in his word.
And we need to be people of courage even when all may look hopeless, or when we get bad news, or when we are being faced with difficult and even sometimes possibly life altering decisions. For we are to make it our ambition and purpose to live holy lives, pleasing to God, and not for ourselves and for our own self-pleasure. And this is not saying we cannot enjoy life, but that our lives must be lived for the Lord and not for our own selfish and sinful desires. We can enjoy in life what is not against God.
For, we must ALL appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad. For if sin is what we practice, and not obedience to our Lord and to his commands, according to the Scriptures, we will not have eternal life with God. But if God and his word are what we obey, and if by the Spirit we are putting sin to death, then we will live. For faith = obedience, and disobedience = unbelief resulting in death, not life.

Bombs are bursting. Night is falling.
Jesus Christ is gently calling
You to follow Him in all ways.
Trust Him with your life today.
Make Him your Lord and your Savior.
Turn from your sin. Follow Jesus.
He will forgive you of your sin;
Cleanse your heart, made new within.
Men betraying: Our trust fraying.
On our knees to God we’re praying,
Seeking God to give us answers
That are only found in Him.
God is sovereign over all things.
Nothing from His mind escaping.
He has all things under His command,
And will work all for good.
Jesus Christ is gently calling
You to follow Him in all ways.
Men deceiving: We’re believing
In our Lord, and interceding
For our nation and its people
To obey their God today.
He is our hope for our future.
For our wounds He offers suture.
He is all we need for this life.
Trust Him with your life today.
